What the hell happened to the Cards fans around here?

Three guesses:

1. They've contracted Woody Williamsitis.

2. They're all on the construction team at new Busch and a large object fell on their heads.

3. Fresh batch of koolaid made?

4. It's spring training, optimism abounds!

Ponson will win 15 games this year.

And 5 of them against the Cubs

:( I'll just content myself with Z dominating you guys yet again.

Z's three year splits against the Cards:

2.15 ERA, .205 BAA

That's known as "filthiness."

Zambrano is a great pitcher, no doubt about it.

See how easy that is, Cubs fans. No fat jokes....... no racist remarks.......... no gay comments. Give it a shot!

Jacque Jones will bat .300/345/484 with 20 SB's and 35 HR's. See how easy it is to make ridiculous predictions.

I didn't say he was going to have a sub 4.00 ERA or 200 Ks. I just said he would win 15 games.

The Cardinals took a 1 million dollar risk on a pitcher that showed a lot of promise 3 years ago. A guy who has done some stupid things in his life that he may or may not have moved on from. Duncan has great track record with guys like this.

If he's a bust, no big deal.

But he's likely to have a 4.50-5.15 ERA. As good as the Cards' offense may be, I don't think it is potent enough to turn a 5.00 ERA pitcher into a 15-game winner. It isn't likely. It could happen, just as Jones could put up those numbers above. It just isn't very likely.

Not only that, but if he fails, then they've got two promising players ready to step in. I can't see how this is a crisis in the making, quite frankly. Some people want to construe his successful spring as a BAD thing. I simply don't agree.

Hey, Bottenfield won 18...

I do think that St. Louis will be a good place for him to restart his career. It doesn't always happen (Tino Martinez) but plenty of guys have found themselves again for the Cards.

Yep, potshots at the other team. That's what we're all about here at NSBB.

And racist remarks? What are you talking about?

I'm not talking about anything specific. I'm just saying......... it's hard to deal with Cub fans here, because of the personal shots that they take.

Let's all relax.

It's a Cubs board. We need to remember that.

Laugh it up, he has a decent chance to have a better VORP than all your starters expect Z.

Oh really...

Sidney Ponson ERA+ last three years.

2003: 115

2004: 90

2005: 67

Jerome Williams

2003: 130

2004: 105

2005: 100

Comments: Williams best year is better than Ponson and even in his worst year, he was league average.

Greg Maddux

2003: 105

2004: 113

2005: 101

Comments: Maddux is declining, but is still league average. Something Ponson has only accomplished once in the past three years.

Glendon Rusch

2003: 68

2004: 131

2005: 94

Comments: Rusch sucks, and yet his worst year was still better than Ponson's worse year. "[expletive]'" horrible year came three years ago. Ponson's was in his most recent season. Rusch's best year was better than Ponson's best year, and Rusch's median year also was better than Ponson's median year.

The only spot Ponson is likely to be better than the Cubs is against the emergency fifth starter. Even then, I'd rather go with Hill, Marshall, or Guzman over Ponson. His track record is that of a below average pitcher and a few spring performances doesn't change that.

What Ponson has a decent chance or better than decent chance is to be a below average pitcher for a number of starts. He's likely to put up an ERA somewhere around 4.67-5.15. He has a "slim" chance of outperforming Rusch and the Cubs' fifth starter. He has almost no chance of outperforming 4/5 of the Cubs rotation.

Saying so would be like me saying Jacque Jones has a decent chance of out performing the entire Cardinals hitters except Pujols. It could happen, but the chances of it are as about as likely as your statement about Ponson coming true.

Well my comment sure got people riled up. :D

Vance, you used a rate stat like OPS+ where as I used VORP. I used VORP because if nothing else Ponson as the ability to eat innnings (think Jeff Suppan). Beyond Z and Maddox (who's 40) I don't see anyone as a lock to get 30 starts since Wood, Prior and Millar will be coming back (and then leaving again?). My comment was a fun bit of hyperbole however it’s not totally inconceivable.

As a side note, I looked up William's PECOTA card and I was shocked how bearish it was with a VORP of 6.9. Heck the fat bird even got a 11.1.

All I was saying is watch him get 5 wins against the Cubs and sucks against the rest of the world..

Nah wasn't aimed at you, just pointing out that we rip on Ponson because in addition to being a fat slob and an alcoholic he's not very good. You don't see us coming up with jokes about Pujols or Rolen.(Edmonds is an exception, I mean come on, JUST LOOK AT HIM!!)

I have resigned myself to ambivalent acceptance. Like I said, there are worse problems to have. I don't have much faith in Ponson, so I think Reyes will be up sooner than later. I just hope it doesn't take long. We don't have the offense (or defense for that matter) to be able to withstand a long stretch of incompetence from Ponson like we may have had the last two years.

What racist or homophobic comments were made? If none were made, it'd be nice of you to not broadly accuse others here.
