Bruce - what do you think the chances are that the Cubs will sign Pierre to a long term deal during Spring Training? Is Pierre looking for a deal or looking forward to hitting the Free Agent market at the end of the year.

The Cubs certainly will attempt to sign Pierre during spring training. It takes two to make a deal, but Hendry will make an offer.

Thanks :D It didn't seem like Hendry's MO to trade three young pitchers for a one year type of guy.

Nicely played. Stick with the Daily Herald, the only paper in town that routinely gives OBP figures in stories and dares to dip in to the dangerous waters of sabermetrics.

Maybe they think it has more to do with Star Wars then baseball.

Which would be fine, too. Star Wars Old School, anyway...

I Definitley Agree that we should wait on Pierre to sign for a longer contract. He is a great leadoff hitter and i hope that he does well. Last season though wasn't his best so I say we wait.

-This was my first post so I hope you guys don't tear me apart!

just kidding. i agree that it seems prudent to wait until Pierre performs a little before offering him a long term deal.

So that people won't tear them apart? New people are often prime targets on message boards. Not here, usually, but in other places it happens.

or trade him for a starter. I don't think his contract is dependent on his performance - what he will do is well known. its pie's performance that will dictate pierre's extension and perhaps murton's performance.

The fact that the Cubs want to extend Pierre really makes signing Jones to a 3 year deal a head-scratcher. You have Pie waiting in AAA and a promising young player in Murton in the corner. Now if you had a superstar talent available, then fine you lock him up to a multi-year deal and you don't worry about what happens to the lesser of Murton and Pie.

I'm not saying they should definitely be pencilling in Pie and Murton as 2/3 of the OF in '07, but they also shouldn't definitely be guaranteeing there's only 1 spot open for the 2 of them in addition to any FA or trade options out there next offseason.

I'm confident enough in Jones that he won't be god-awful, which will be enough for him to not be traded next offseason. Just a horrible decision to sign him for more than a year.

According to cubs.com, Ohman and Pierre have signed 1 year deals. Zambrano is next. Terms were not disclosed yet. Stay tuned.

I thought they were going to try and lock-up Pierre long term.

This doesn't mean they can't. They've done this lots of times _ avoid arbitration and then sign a guy to a multiyear deal in spring training.

they did it last season with Aramis, and nearly gave me a heart attack when they waited til opening day to sign him long term to that goofy contract. BTW, Bruce, has there been any indication of Aramis wanting to exercise that opt out clause?

Ramirez repeatedly has said he wants to stay with the Cubs. There's been no talk of him opting out, but if he hits 40 HR and drives in a ton of runs with an OBP of .356, all bets might be off.

I'm sorry Mr. Miles. I understand that you write for an established newspaper. How do you know what OBP is?

No way. You should be more like the guys on ESPN 1000 and talk a lot about pitchers' W-L records.

Sadly enough, I do think that is our ideal situation.

While I'm against the Jones signing, his contract/salary aren't trade prohibitive. It's possible we'll deal Jones if we extend Pierre and Pie is ready in '07.

I keep reading this. Who exactly are we going to trade Jones to? Snood, I'm not singling you out on this, just using your post as an example.

His contract/salary are prohibitive if the rest of MLB concludes he's not good enough to be an everyday player, which is exactly what will happen if he continues on his current path.

There will always be the Royals, Pirates, or another small market team that could take him. If the Cubs pay a little over a million for two years, Jones will only be a $4 million a year outfielder. It's not like the Cubs would be trying to trade Bobby Higginson at the height of his ridiculous contract.

Well, the Cubs weren't the only team interested in signing him. To me, that implies other teams value him somewhat. If we ate some of the salary, I don't see why it would be so hard to trade him. I'm not suggesting we'd get much back for him. I'm just saying it's not like we'd be trying to move a Mo Vaughn contract. Worse players than Jacque Jones have been traded before. it's not unrealistic to think it could happen again.
