I thought they were going to try and lock-up Pierre long term.

This doesn't mean they can't. They've done this lots of times _ avoid arbitration and then sign a guy to a multiyear deal in spring training.

they did it last season with Aramis, and nearly gave me a heart attack when they waited til opening day to sign him long term to that goofy contract. BTW, Bruce, has there been any indication of Aramis wanting to exercise that opt out clause?

Let's hope this is not that case this time.

Ramirez repeatedly has said he wants to stay with the Cubs. There's been no talk of him opting out, but if he hits 40 HR and drives in a ton of runs with an OBP of .356, all bets might be off.

Juan Pierre - OF - Cubs

Cubs agreed to terms with outfielder Juan Pierre on a one-year, $5.75 million contract.

That's midpoint between the $6.5 million Pierre filed at and the $5 million the team offered. A long-term deal is still a possibility for Pierre, who is eligible for free agency at season's end. Feb. 2 - 3:18 pm et

Will Ohman - R - Cubs

Cubs agreed to terms with LHP Will Ohman on a one-year, $610,000 contract.

Ohman asked for $775,000 and was offered $500,000 in his first year of arbitration eligibility. He'll be the No. 2 lefty in the Cubs' pen after finishing with a 2.91 ERA in 69 appearances last season. Feb. 2 - 3:16 pm et

Maybe Bruce can explain why the Cubs want a **FIFTH** Judy-hitting second baseman like Graffanino. You just can't have enough lousy 2B I guess if it's your goal to be a pennant winner!

I don't know if the Cubs necessarily "want" Graffanino. They like him and would probably take him for not a whole lot. I'm sure they'd see him more as a 3B backup and utility guy. The Walker situation still isn't settled either.

Bruce, any word on the terms of the Ohman and Pierre deals?

Terms already posted on this board are correct.

Thanks.

Is it looking more likely that Walker remains with the team or do you see him dumped in spring training?

Also, do you anticipate an extension happening with Pierre in ST or will that be after the season?

Finally, are the Cubs attempting to sign Zambrano for only one year or to a multi-year deal?

He could be used as a nice trading chip come July.

The way it's going, Walker probably goes to spring training with the Cubs. Who knows? It might be the best trade they never made.

The Cubs likely will talk with Pierre and Lee in spring training about extensions.

For now, the Cubs will sign Zambrano to a one-year deal. He's not a free agent after this season, so there's no big hurry. He's got a new agent, and I'm sure they'd like to see how things play out. If he has another good year, I see the Cubs talking about a long term with him next winter.

I'm sorry Mr. Miles. I understand that you write for an established newspaper. How do you know what OBP is?

Nicely played. Stick with the Daily Herald, the only paper in town that routinely gives OBP figures in stories and dares to dip in to the dangerous waters of sabermetrics.

Thanks. I'm really hoping nothing works out as a trade on the Walker front. I have a feeling that if he's on the team, Dusty will start him...at least against right handers.

Maybe they think it has more to do with Star Wars then baseball.

Bruce - what do you think the chances are that the Cubs will sign Pierre to a long term deal during Spring Training? Is Pierre looking for a deal or looking forward to hitting the Free Agent market at the end of the year.

The Cubs certainly will attempt to sign Pierre during spring training. It takes two to make a deal, but Hendry will make an offer.

Phew, that's lucky, bets are still on because I think Ramirez is going to post a .378 OBP this year! :P
