Former 4th round pick, outfielder, turns 25 in July. Career minor league line of .278/.334/.373/.707 at age appropriate levels. 163 minor league steals at a 73% success rate. I hope he's really really good defensively, because he hasn't done a whole lot on the offensive end.

Met's OF prospect.

Spent all of last year in AAA Norfolk. Took up a .271/.333/.395 line there.

In 516 ABs he had 140 hits, 20 doubles, 10 triples, 8 homers, 40 RBIs, 27 steals against 15 caught, and 49 walks against 111 strikouts.

Was selected by the Met's fourth round in 1999 amateur entry draft.

EDIT: Oh, and apparently he's a switch-hitter too.

I though after the Miller signing we were at 40 on the 40 man roster. What happened?

And more importantly, what on earth has this guy done to warrant being on a 40 man roster for a $100m payroll team?

Might be using the term prospect loosely here. He doesn't even have AAAA numbers at 25.

Strange theory ahead. Pagan is a placeholder for Greenberg. That way we have the flexibility of not having Greenberg on the 40 man or worrying about taking him off if something else comes along that needs his spot. If we do need Greenberg to replace someone(for example, Pierre gets hurt and misses an extended period of time), then we just drop Pagan and bring up Greenberg to fill the need. If we need a 40 man spot in a trade or for another need(say Ramirez gets hurt and we need Fontenot), then Pagan is expendable enough to just dump. Meanwhile, worse players than Pagan have graced 40 man's before, and maybe he fulfills his 4th round potential in a different system. I dunno, maybe that's the thought process.

Yeah, I'm just not sure I get this one. I mean, he clearly needs to develop his power and BB/K ratio.

How do Greenberg's stats compare?

hendry, wth are you doing? hopefully he is a piece in an upcoming trade.

Maybe it's some kind of Pagan ritual by the Cubs to torture us? Sorry...I just couldn't stop myself.

This seems to be an interesting move by the Cubs. Let's hope it's just before something good like a big trade for that impact bat.

Seems like he's considered one of those 'raw', toolsy, players with a lot of potential due to his build and athletic ability. Billy Beane would probably puke upon scouting this guy. So would I.

I wonder why the Mets gave up on him. Is he out of options?

There is a fatal flaw in your statement. Billy Beane doesn't scout guys. He goes strictly off stats. If Hendry and Hughes never look at stats, it follows that Beane must never scout guys.

Maybe but I don't think he has horrible numbers and I have no idea how good his defense is.

He's pretty much a NRI, even though he's on the 40 man roster. He'll be given a chance to compete for a bench spot, but will probably lose out to Grissom. At that point Pagan will be cut and Grissom will take his roster slot.

What? Billy Beane and Hendry/Hughes are completely different ends of the spectrum, so to make an inference or correlation or draw conclusions by comparing them really just confounds the argument. Are you being sarcastic because of the "Moneyball" discussion in the Gary Hughes thread?

For the record, Beane may not be a scout officially. But that doesn't mean he sits in front of data all day and makes his decisions based upon it. He was at one time an advance scout for the A's, and I recognize the difference, but I can't recall if he was ever a player scout by trade.

Ding! That is a very good explanation. It makes a heck of a lot of sense.

Lighten up, Francis. I'm just doing a bit. :D
