I wonder if he is related to the ex Pirate Jose Pagan?

I was wondering the same thing. I got Jose's autograph when the Pirates were in St Louis back in '66.

That's when they used Birch Trees for paper right?

Seems like he's considered one of those 'raw', toolsy, players with a lot of potential due to his build and athletic ability. Billy Beane would probably puke upon scouting this guy. So would I.

There is a fatal flaw in your statement. Billy Beane doesn't scout guys. He goes strictly off stats. If Hendry and Hughes never look at stats, it follows that Beane must never scout guys.

What? Billy Beane and Hendry/Hughes are completely different ends of the spectrum, so to make an inference or correlation or draw conclusions by comparing them really just confounds the argument. Are you being sarcastic because of the "Moneyball" discussion in the Gary Hughes thread?

For the record, Beane may not be a scout officially. But that doesn't mean he sits in front of data all day and makes his decisions based upon it. He was at one time an advance scout for the A's, and I recognize the difference, but I can't recall if he was ever a player scout by trade.

Lighten up, Francis. I'm just doing a bit. :D

My bad...Wasn't sure where you were going with that.

I could see you as a kid with your chisle and tablet yelling for Jose to sign it.

Jose was a utility type infielder wasn't he?

I wonder why the Mets gave up on him. Is he out of options?

It might have something to do with his inability to do any of the following...

1. Get on base.

2. Hit for power.

3. Steal bases well.

4. Hit for more than a decent average if he must suck at those other three.

Simply put, he's a crappy player.

hendry, wth are you doing? hopefully he is a piece in an upcoming trade.

If there is an upcoming trade related to this acquisition, it likely involves Todd Walker. The Cubs are unlikely to trade any of their current OFs, but this acquisition may have been made give the team enough OF depth to allow Hairston back to full time IF duty. That might be desireable if the team is consiering moving Todd Walker. Given the recent signing of Miller, the team now has too many pitchers (and too many players in general), so its likely that the Cubs will also deal away a pitcher before opening day. Walker and a pitcher for a bat is my prediction...

I though after the Miller signing we were at 40 on the 40 man roster. What happened?

And more importantly, what on earth has this guy done to warrant being on a 40 man roster for a $100m payroll team?

You could ask that about Neifi Perez, Jacques Jones....

*sigh* Our own personal little hell is only 68 days away. Yippie!! :pukel:

I think you could be right, but can we really get a good bat for Walker and a half-ass pitcher? I hope so, but I doubt it.

Well, i've done some more thinking on what we could bring back for such a deal, and i've come up with a possible answer: Ryan Freel. He is currently buried on the Reds' depth chart, and isn't slated to start at any position. He spent most of his time at 2B and LF last season, two spots currently blocked by Tony Womack and Wily Mo Pena (respectively). He has had decent offensive numbers - given his OBP and speed he'd fit well into the 2 spot currently unfilled in the lineup, and he can be viewed as a defensive upgrade over Walker - his range factor and zone rating are both better, despite his having a lower fielding% (i would be pleasantly surprised if Hendry looked at more elegant defensive stats than these, but i doubt he does). Finally, his ability to play multiple positions could give the Cubs insurance for injuies or poor performance at every position except C and 1B. Walker would be a huge upgrade over Tony Womack, and sweetening the pot with Wellemeyer would only make this deal more doable from the Reds POV.

So what do you all think of Walker + Wellemeyer for Ryan Freel? Doable? Advisable? Horrible?

Without looking it up, I'd say right now that I'd rather just have Walker, but if we're going on the assumption that Walker is going to be traded/relegated to the bench, I'd do it. Wellemeyer is a nice guy, but he's replaceable, and Freel has a huge head and looks really funny. Oh, he also gets on base.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. I don't think there's much chance the Reds would. It's much more likely they'll move an OF and put him there. He's their only real leadoff hitter. Plus they had Walker before, and they have Aurilia now that they can play there. Also, Wellemeyer won't excite them. I'd offer Hairston and Novoa and see what they say, but I'd doubt it. He's cheap and good and the fans love him. Unless the new owner HATES the DUI thing, I think we'd have to blow them away to get him.

Does this signing= Pagan to AAA, Pie to AA?

I severly doubt that. Bringin in some OF prospect from the Mets isn't going to sideline Pie. Pie is this organization's #1 prospect. They'll do everything they can for him.

Angel Pagan was a 1999 draft and follow who signed in May 2000. Pagan did not play for his high school team. He was discovered in a tryout camp. Scouts projected him to potentially be a 25-30HR hitter once he filled out. But, the Mets have focused Pagan on hitting ground balls to take advantage of his speed especially from the left side. Given the Mets focus on his speed, Pagan is unlikely to achieve his 25-30 HR potential. Pagan is considered raw in most areas save defense and bunting. Pagan has great confidence and is very coachable. He plays a shallow centerfield and projects to be an outstanding defensive player with a good arm.

He finished up strong at AAA by hitting .317 in August. Pagan projects to be a backup with good defense and speed -- areas Hendry has clearly been trying to address.

I'm guessing Pie will start at AAA as a starter. Also, we had two AAA OF propsects signed away in Ben Grieve and David Kelton. So I wouldn't be surprised if Pagan competes for some spots with the rest of the staff.

Or he could be sent down to AA. His minor league numbers weren't exactly shiny last year.

Pretty much. He was a regular for a couple of years early in his career with the Giants, but a utility player for most of his career. He played mainly SS and 3B but also played some at 1B, 2B, OF, and C.

Yes, Jose was a lot like Neifi Perez, only with less power. He became a utility player early on because it was just too easy to find someone better.

According to the Tribune, Pagan will have the opportunity to win a job at ST.

Still looking for outfield help, though, the Cubs bought speedy career minor-league outfielder Angel Pagan, 24, from the Mets on Wednesday and will add him to the mix of players they will look at this spring.

I guess we lost Calvin Murray as well, so our AAA OF is pretty much empty, although I'm told their priming Brandon Sing for OF, and if he moves up to AAA, he'd probably split time.

So it looks Pie, Pagan, and a AA OF like Bacon or Greenberg.

Sing will have to learn the outfield if he's ever going to be a backup at the major league level, for us. Hope he does well.
