Hogging as superstition

Some athletic teams regard it to be good luck if a member of the team goes hogging the night before an important game and sometimes even designate a member to do so. Others believe that having a designated member of the team to go hogging will end a losing streak for a team. A famous practitioner of hogging as slumpbuster was Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Grace, who said: "The slumpbuster is when you have to take one for the team. It's finding the biggest, nastiest, fattest broad, and you put the wood to her to come out of your slump.

Wow...Grace always had a way with words

I've been pissed off at Grace since he insulted Sammy's cork thing during his last season playing with Arizona. I know the Cubs screwed him over after the 2000 season but that really got under my skin.

Knowing Grace, no one will really pay attention to that comment because he always was outspoken like that.

How did the Cubs screw him?

I've heard him tell this story or ones like it on the Jim Rome show. Great radio!

I remember another line from Grace on the Jim Rome show:

Just 'cause you're in the same kitchen doesn't mean some dude is digging your chili

Ah, "falling on a grenade" as it were. This is old news as far as Grace goes.

And yes, Grace was sorta screwed by Chicago. They wanted Choi in there and wouldn't even consider resigning Grace, more or less ignoring his contribution to the team for all those years and giving him an unfriendly kick out the door. According to Grace, they wouldn't even return his calls.

Can you explain that for me? I don't get it.

It was part of a discussion on homosexuality in baseball.

As Mark told it in "Cubs Nation" by Wojo (fantastic book, read it read it read it), the Cubs kept telling him that they'd get a deal done with him after they took care of their other offseason needs and then ultimately just didn't make him an offer, leaving him to fend for himself with very little time left in the offseason. He claimed that he would've understood if they'd kicked him out the door in favor of Choi as long as they'd been honest about it.

Grace signed with the Diamondbacks on December 8th. That's hardly late in the offseason.

The people who love Grace as a Cub better not be the same ones who want Walker gone because of his big mouth.

Grace and Walker both never pulled any punches. They told it how it is, and I respect that.

I respect Grace's honesty, but not when he is honest about behaving like a Neanderthal.

I respect Grace as a player, but he sounds like a real pig. I don't think I want to meet him.

I respect Walker as a player too - jury's out on him personally.

I met him in the Galleria in Houston and he seemed like a very nice guy. I've also hung out with him in S'port and he was cool.

I'm wondering why there's a thread about this......I heard this story, if I'm not mistaken, about 4 or five years ago. Edited by Bgbird68

Because it is a definition Wikipedia.com uses to describe the 2 words mentioned in the thread title. Grace actually said something that will go down in the halls of internet history!
