AP"]The Bears announced Wednesday they have agreed to a three-year contract extension with running back Adrian Peterson.

Terms of the deal, which will carry through the 2009 season, were not disclosed.

The Bears also signed receiver Alex Bannister to a one-year contract and released cornerback Chris Thompson and wide receivers C.J. Fayton and Mark Philmore.

Mark...

So does this make it inevitable that TJ's days are numbered?

I think everyone is forgetting how great it is that Chris Thompson was cut.

I mean, the guy is terrible.

I think it's no more than covering their butts.

I don't think either signing is out of spite, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of message in there. Bears players don't really have a leg to stand on if they say they don't take care of their own. Some "expert" accused the Bears of that and it just doesn't hold water. They extend guys all the time. They signed Jones as a free agent when he knew ATrain could steal some of his time, and now that Benson can do the same he can't really complain. If he didn't want the multi year deal, he shouldn't have taken it. And they tried to resign Briggs, but it doesn't make much sense to give him more than Urlacher. They are at risk of being very thin at LB, and locking up Hunter, for what I am going to assume is a reasonable amount of money, helps to deal with that issue.

The deal seems reasonable.

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports that the deal includes a $5 million signing bonus.

For some reason that seemed a little high. I'm wondering what the total value is. I wouldn't think he's worth much more than $1.5-2m per.

I heard that the total contract is worth in the 11-13m range depending on the escalators.

ChicagoSports.com"]All of the Bears' 2006 draft picks have signed after safety Danieal Manning and defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek agreed to four-year contracts Wednesday.

Terms of the deals were not disclosed. Manning was the Bears first selection in the draft, chosen out of Abilene Christian in the second round (42nd overall).

Yeah, this is why JA traded the 1st rounder away. After dumping a load of cash on Benson and enduring a long, painful holdout last year, '06 became time for a little decompression. With all the rooks in the fold, now they can just concentrate on Training Camp, and giving Briggs & TJ their final years as Bears.

Salisbury and Clayton were on ESPN Radio this afternoon and they said Briggs just turned down a deal from the Bears that would pay him $5.5M annually. It is the same amount Will Witherspoon signed with St. Louis for this offseason. They both seemed surprised Briggs didn't take the deal, and doubted he would be able to get more than $6M a year even with another monster season.

Clayton also speculated that Briggs will miss the first 2-3 weeks of training camp. Clayton said he didn't think that would be "a big deal". Then the conversation wne toff topic as they talked about how it would be "a big deal" to Lovie.

Let him move on then. I believe Urlacher made him look better than he was anyways.

I don't think I can agree with Urlacher making Briggs better, since Briggs had an amazing year in 04 when Urlacher missed all or parts of 9 games. If it came down to keeping Urlacher and Briggs, I'd think long and hard about keeping Briggs over him. Briggs is younger and healthier. Urlacher probably a better LB overall, but not so much better that you can overlook the 2-year age difference and 49 of 49 games in his career that Briggs has played (although, Urlacher has only missed time in 2004).

Let us hope that this is the player we got:

Honestly, that doesn't impress me that much. There were 2-3 returns there were people got remotely close to him. 2 of those returns he should have been taken down for a loss but got away due to a horrible tackle. The other was a legit return. He has some remarkable speed but Miami also had some pretty great return blocking there.

This is just a really dumb NFC north preview. How do you have a preview like that, and essentially ignore the Bears? He mentions the Bears schedule and contract beefs, but says nothing of their strengths. Meh...I'm just ready for NFL season.

I was thinking the same thing. It's a 4 team division and he hardly mentioned the Bears. How hard can that be?
