Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic is reporting that free agent OF Eric Byrnes and the Diamondbacks have agreed to a 1-year, $2.2 million deal...

...is byrnes starts, that means that either rookie OF Carlos Quentin or rookie OF/1B Conor Jackson won't, which could indicate that one might be part of another deal...

What do you guys think? Carlos Quentin's stats really catch my eye, especially because the Diamondbacks are supposedly interested in Corey Patterson? I realize it wouldn't be a one-for-one trade....but the stats are there for Quentin...

Last year in AAA he hit .301/.422/.520 in 452 ABs. He also has an almost 1:1 ratio of BB/SO. He's not a speed-demon, but he hit 21 homers and 28 doubles. For some reason, he also gets HBP quite a bit as well.

I think he'd be great, but where would we put him?

Would they give up one of their top prospects straight up for just Corey Patterson?

No, to get him you'll have to give up something that hurts.

I hate that phrase.

Watching Corey Patterson hit hurts. Does that qualify?

Ok, we'll give them Corey Patterson and kick someone in the crotch.

Why would any team give up any top prospect for a player like Corey Patterson?

So you're saying I can't watch the Cubs play baseball anymore?

Do they have a glaring need?

Maybe the bullpen? That's probably about it though.

A package deal that had us take some salary could probably be arranged, but I'm not overly excited about Gonzalez. I wouldn't mind Green, but I think he'd invoke his no trade clause.

Pitching of all kinds. They could field a team full of under 28 players next year with C-Estrada, 1B-Jackson, 2B-Hudson, SS-Drew, 3B-Tracy, LF- Quentin, CF- Young, RF- Green (only older one).

But they don't have much young pitching. A couple of good arms, but they could use a few more.

I think the addition of Byrnes reduces Arizona's interest in Patterson.

Yes, but it also increases the chances of Quentin being traded.

Also, I did mention that it would not be a one-for-one trade CP for Quentin. So yes, I do realize that. I just thought Quentin looked like a very talented prospect on a team with no room for him. IE, available for trade.

The DBacks, before they signed Byrnes, didn't have a CF to speak of (terrero), ready to play everyday. This is an outstanding pick up for the DBacks.

With the trade of Glaus, I think the DBacks plan is to play Tracy at 3rd and Jackson at first. They are not going to trade Quentin. Especially with an injury prone Gonazlez in LF who needs a cutoff man to the cutoff man and Green who isn't getting any younger. Quentin is an ideal insurance policy in case either get injured.

DBacks would be insane to trade Quentin and especially Jackson.

quinton will not be traded...the dbacks are going to rebuild from within and they havve enough minor league positional talent to win the NL West for years to come....byrnes will be the cf for one year while keeping the seat warm for their young ofs.
