Shelden Williams is such a product of the hype machine. I cannot believe a fan of IU would think he is better than James Augustine. Who is the better shooter up to 15 feet? Who is the better rebounder? Who runs the floor better? Williams is supposed to be a defensive wizard, yet Killingsworth gets what 30 and 15 on him. Killingsworth is a damn good player, but the ndpoty should be able to hold him under 30.

Redick better than Brown, that is laughable. Hell last year Dee even shot a better percent than JJ. Dee is playing out of position and still leading his team to an undefeated record thus far. Throw JJ at point and see how Duke does. JJ is just like the other great shooters who have played at Duke. He fits a role, he can shoot. He cannot create without clearly pushing off and yet get a foul called for him in the process. ANyone who doesn;t think he is a product of the hype machine is kidding themselves. If Dee Brown had to play 1-1 with JJ, I doubt JJ could get a shot off on him, even with 4 inches. To be the big ten player of the year and defensive player of the year, yet not be labled on the same plane as some shooter who runs off of screens and plays ole defense is a joke.

oh and for the big east hing, that conference is going to be a death march. I would hate to be a fan of one of the smaller rutgers type schools. There are just no easy Ws.

Big Ten opener in the books. IU 70, Michigan 63. Didn't get to watch, but looked like it was a pretty decent game. IU led the majority of the game, but it was very much in doubt until the last minute or 2. Michigan destroyed IU on the boards. Reigning conference player of the week, Robert Vaden had 17 all in the 2nd half.

There is no doubting you are an "illiniguy." You should watch Reddick more, he isn't the same player he was as a freshman. He is very good at creating his own shot. I don't think he would have much of a problem "getting a shot off" on Dee. I guess time will tell, but the Illini have to get some quality wins before I believe they are a legit top 10 team.

IU didn't shoot well, especially for them. As you mentioned they also need to rebound better. Vaden took over the gae though. I acutally think he is our best player. Killer and D.J can (and will) do damage down low, but Vaden has a sweet shot, looks to pass first, and is the best defender on the team. Saturday vs. the Buckeyes should be fun.

I'm probably one of the biggest U of I homers there are, but I'd take Williams over Augustine. I love James Augustine, but for crying out loud James will you quit being so darn unselfish? I hate when he gets the ball down low then immediately looks to kick it out instead of taking it to the basket like Williams does. I just hope he doesn't get into foul trouble during the Big Ten season. Yes, if Augustine played at Duke and Williams played at Illinois the hype machine would be Augustine and Williams would be the lesser known. Augustine is the better shooter, rebounding wise I call it even. I do think had Williams played for Illinois last year in the national championship game, he wouldn't have been in foul trouble like Augustine. But you're right part of the Williams mystique is because he's at Duke.

Vaden's definitely the team's best player. He can do it all. Killer and DJ don't seem to be playing well together. Wilmont is a great defensive player too. He turned the momentum around midway thru the 2nd with his defensive play.

I think by the end of the year you will see that the UNC win at Chapel Hill could be classified as a quality win. I will say the same thing I said last year. We will go as far as our shooting takes us. Our defense again is so good that if we score 65+ points we shouldn't lose but two games at the most all season.

Augustine scares me. He's one of those guys that has been waiting his time and developing every year. He was thrown out there as a freshman and it is gonna pay off this year. But no, he's not as good as Williams, who is really not all that. I'd say he's a better rebounder than Augustine and a much better shot blocker. But JA is the better defender 1-on-1.

Who do you guys think is gonna be on the All- Big Ten team at the end of this year?

Vaden-IU

Brown-MSU

Killingsworth (twice)-IU

Davis- MSU

Augustine- Ill

Tucker- UW

Sims- UM

have been players of the week so far. This list doesn't even include the conference's top 2 scorers Ager-MSU and Vukusic-NW, and Dee Brown who's a lock. So, who gets the other 4 spots?

I try not to do pre-season predictions especially in collegiate sports. But it does seem that there's always one player who comes out of nowhere to make the All-Big Ten team. I agree with the list of the obvious candidates, but someone off the radar like a Haluska could make it.

I would expect IU's shooting to get worse in the big ten season and when their legs start to get tired. the difference in shooting for the illini at the end of the season got much worse. I would be willing to bet they win the NC if they get a week off between the semifinals.

It's all relative I suppose. I have never seen a study that indicates teams FG % goes down towards the end of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case though. Entering the game tonight IU led the nation in FG%. I'm not sure if that is still the case.

they may still lead the league but they will face tough D every night now. if you look at illinois's games last year, they dominated games after layoffs louisville versus arizona and shot poorly on short rest late in the season. ok, I never looked it up but it sure seemed that way.

Some of that may be tired legs, but I'd guess that in major conferences FG% drops from playing solid competition in every single game. It doesn't matter if it's the ACC/B10/B12/Big East or if they are having an up or down year, there's none of the extreme patsies that ALL teams play in the nonconference schedule.

Illinois lost the national championship game in the first half... I think they only shot like 27% in the first half. Their second half shooting improved as well as their defense in the second. To me, they were a streaky shooting team all last year.

Posted
didn't they tie the game in the second half and then proceed to miss about five shots in a row? I agree they lost the game in the first half but they definitely were out of gas the last two minutes.

yep, they had a chance to take the lead with about 1:30 left, when luther launched a 3 that looked on-line, but was just a bit too hard.

people forget that that game was a great game, great comeback for the illini against a team full of crazy athletes.

dal, did you stop watching after the first half? because the second half was pretty exciting.

I will always blame your school for giving NC another Championship. The refs put them there and I wanted you guys to rip it out of their grubby little blue hands.
