I'm hearing the rumor from 3 weeks ago again that the D-Backs are pushing the Cubs hard on a Luis Gonzalez and cash for Corey Patterson deal.

It seems with the Glaus for Hudson and Batista trade done, the D-Backs are going to move Tracy to 3B, Counsell to SS and Green to RF with Tony Clark at 1B, and they are hoping to move Conor Jackson to LF if someone would take Luis in return for a CF.

I've heard that if the Prior-Tejada deal goes nowhere, Hendry will consider trading Corey for Luis unless the Mets pull off a Manny Ramirez deal in which case Hendry will again focus on Cliff Floyd.

Hendry is rumored to be working the phones hard to get a big bat for LF, SS or 2B.

Depending on Gonzalez's remaining contract, I'm pretty sure I'd do it. He's still a pretty good bat. And we need some revamping, and if all it costs is Corey Patterson, that'd be fine with me.

If he wants a big bat for LF, he should think really big.

Would a package of Hill, Pie and Dopirak land Dunn?

If we're going to sign Pierre to a long-term deal and we signed Craptacular Jones for three years to hold down rightfield, Pie may be more valuable as a trading chip.

Would the Reds bite on such a deal?

The Reds don't have a log jam in the OF anymore. Plus, I doubt they'd want to trade him to a team in the NL Central.

I've disabled sigs. I think for myself and if I want to discuss trading for Dunn, I'll do it once a day if I so please.

I agree, but the Reds aren't contending either so I think for the right package he could still be available. I wouldn't expect him to come cheap either...but I don't believe it beyond the realm of possibility either.

I vote for this instead of Prior-Tejada.

Pierre

Walker (let me dream)

Lee

Aramis

Gonzo

Barrett

Jones

Cedeno

With Murton as the 4th OF.

Thats a solid line-up. Add in Prior, Z, Wood, Maddux, Williams/Hill/Guzman/Rusch. Add Dempster/Howry/Eyre/Ohman/Wuertz and I think we have a winner. That is simply a better team than one with Tejada and without Prior.

As much as I would love Dunn, I agree about their situation. I wonder how they'd respond to a Lee for Dunn + Freel deal, or something similar.

Hopefully harder than he worked the phones to get a big bat for RF.

If Dusty had that he'd probably would switch Walker and Jones.

And regarding the deal, I don't see i happening now. Our outfield looks set as is. However if the deal did go through, I would tell Arizona to keep their money and we'll take Quentin, plus throw i something like Harvey. Sure there would be a bit of a logjamin the OF, but thats a good problem to have right? Eventually Jones just becomes a very epensive backup.

OF-Pierre(I'm just assuming he'll stay), Pie, Quentin.

Murton is eventually used as a trade chip for something, otherwise he could go to LF an let Pierre walk.

Okay I'll stop dreaming now.

Much rather give up Cpatt for Gonzo than giving Prior for Tejada. It's a no-brainer.

More news: Gonzo has indicated he would invoke his 10/5 rights unless he was given an extension for 2007.

Nevermind then. Moving on...

One is Gonzalez, one is Tejada.

And one is a SS and the other is a corner OF. Couldn't you match up Sandbergs numbers with a corner OF guy too and make him not look as good?

Granted, the player cost is a big difference but I don't see how comparing a corner OF with a middle infielder stats and seeing them as the same value.

If that's the case, no. If it doesn't require an extension, I'd likely do it and platoon Murton with Jones in RF (Murton starting against all LHP).

Hey, Jim...

Get your big bat in RF and move Jones to LF to platoon with MM.

Jones has a 3-year contract, but that doesn't mean he'll be with the Cubs for 3 years. Assuming Pie is ready next year, Jones should be a very tradeable commodity as a corner OF signed for $10 million over 2 years.

If Pie is ready, he'll play regularly. After all of the ballyhooing about Pie and refusing to trade him, he isn't going to start out in a platoon situation with a less-than-average RF.

But how much of Pie's value as a prospect is tied to him being able to play CF? If that's not where he's going to play, it might be wise to trade him.

That's exactly what was about to point out. It's a meaningless comparison.
