I never thought it would come to this, but would there be any interest in takinng back a 39 Year old slugger, who is coming off a .321/.400/.518 Line with a .918 OPS at 6 mil. I think we have the cap room to make a pretty good platoon if we also acquire Kevin Millar, or Aubrey Huff, and start Alou vs. lefties (who he absolutely killed over the last 3 years, 1.000+ OPS vs. lefties in 05, .981 OPS vs. lefties over last 3 years.

Aubrey Huff's 3 year line vs. Righties: .289/.356/.517/.873

Kevin Millars 3 year line vs. Righties: 283/.362/.466/.828

We could see a good amount of OBP and BB's from this group, as Huff+Alou combined for 105 Walks, and Alou+Millar combined for 100 Walks.

This would overall probably cost in the neighborhood between 10-12 Mil (+Players AND Prospects if you are taking Huff)

No thanks. Alou is better in LF which still leaves a hole in RF (he's not a platoon guy). I don't think it's as easy as moving Murton to RF. Besides, I've been disgusted with Alou since the 2003 playoffs...

Why would the Giants trade Alou?

Between Alou and Huff, you'd be paying more than it would have costed for Brian Giles by himself. Plus, it would cost the rest of the Cubs farm system to get them.

I want nothing to do with Alou. Let him lazily kick the ball in the ivy in San Francisco for the rest of his lazy career.

Considering the other options, I'd take Alou back in a heartbeat. That being said, I pretty certain the Giants have no interest in trading him.

I don't see him leaving his father. I also do not want him on the Cubs.

No way. Although Alou was adept at handling the bat he was MORIBUND at every thing else. He had possibly the worst OF range in the MLBs, and his routine misplays on balls led to a plethora of extra bases and runs. His deterorating speed also made him an EASY (on both ends) DP target. Not to mention, he was picked off or run down on the bases even more than Corey Patterson (is that possible). And how many times did he inexcusably overthrow the cutoff man???? Simply put, you can take at least 25 -30 runs of his RBI totals with all his miscues and lapses. IMO resigning Bernie would be a better option. Not that HE was great, but it wasn't his fault the rest of the OF was a disaster.

Burnitz was just as responsible for the disaster in the outfield as the rest of the partcipants.

258/322/435 is pretty much horrible.

They have ivy at their stadium?

What is it now anyway? PacBell? SBC? Rice-a-Roni Park?

I believe it's AARP Park.

Point taken. But at least Burny wasn't killing this team in other areas of his game. Personally, I'd rather watch Bernie's futility at the plate, than Alou's evrywhere else. Though neither option is the obvious pereference. :)

I was never a fan of Alou, but I think I'd take the deficiencies in his game over what Burntiz provided along with his 900 OPS.

Why? I remember him kicking ass in both playoff series.

For the record, I was among the anti-Alou crowd but would love to have him back. Last year's abominable offense made me miss the piss.

I blame the Bartman incident on both Alou (and Gonzo). IMO, it was Alou that unnerved the crowd, Prior, and the rest of the team with his outburst. Had Moises simply acted like the ball was a routine ball out of play the inning would have proceeded without incident (and Prior would have probably escaped unscathed). Alou's reaction quieted the crowd and made eveyone feel weird. I was watching at home thinking "oh no" and I'm sure it affected AGon, Prior, and everyone else. From what I've read, McKeon said , in response to the Bartman ball, "let's make this kid famous." In reality it was Alou that made him famous with his usual lack of self control.

just thinking for a second, if we had signed him after the 04 season, since we missed out on all of drew, beltran, and ordonez. Alou's 9 mil option, was = to burnitz's 5 mil contract (which would have been avoided had we signed alou), alous 2.5 mil buyout, and 1.5 mil to assorted non productive players (macias, and perez, + chump change), we could have definatley afforded him, can you imagine wat alou's .400 OBP, and .918 would have done for last years team? Can anyone caluclate the difference in win shares between burnitz and alou's 05?

Not to mention the fact that he was willing to come back for less than the 9 million that the club option would have paid him.

Given the circumstances I think most people would have reacted the same way as Alou. It was just one of those freak things in an intense playoff game.

I understand intensity but I think Alou's reaction was over the top (and it wouldn't be the last time he flew off the handle as a Cub). IMO, all the things he does wrong (including not controlling his temper) outweigh his offensive abilities.

Burnitz cannot be resigned with the Cubs til May 1.

He hit into DPs and wasn't the best fielder or baserunner, but I loved Alou on the Cubs. That 5 game series where he (nearly :D ) singlehandedly knocked Stl out of the playoffs will go down as one of the best Cubs performances in history.

He even appeared to me in a dream telling me he was going to pick it up, and then hit three homeruns in the next 2 games or something.

im just imagining rite now wat alou in the 4 or 5 spot with Lee and Aram + maybe a more consistently smart lineup with a dependable middle of the order guy in it would have done. Oh well, i cant say i wasnt fully behind not picking the option up, but if i had known that out of the 4 top OF's that year, Alou would be the most productive and reasonably priced one, i would have wrote my own admission to a insane asylum.
