Cubs send Derrek Lee, Jerome Williams, and pitching prospect(s) to the Devil Rays for Julio Lugo, Aubrey Huff, and Jonny Gomes.

Giving up too much? Too little? No way you're trading Lee?

Just curious, not even a rumor, but I was talking about it with my dad last night, and he said there's just no way you trade Lee.

I would not do it - giving up far too much for Burnitz-like nos in Huff, a middle of the road guy in Lugo, and the unproven (but talented) Gomes.

I might consider Lee alone for that bunch, but TB would not.

Judging by the way this is going, would you try and package Lee in a deal if it filled that many holes AND you got a servicable 1B in return?

No. I'm not trading my superstar first baseman unless I get a superstar in return or at least 3 VERY good players. And even if you assume DLee's season was a bit of a fluke he is still a VERY good hitter and one of the top defensive first basemen in the league.

It's not so much that I think it's a fluke, it's that his value is higher than it has ever been, and likely higher than it will ever be. I think he'll probably be a 290 hitter for the rest of his career. BUT, we have some holes, and it's one way to fill them.

Not when there are still many months to go in the offseason. There are a lot of possible trades still out there but it isn't even December 20th yet. Most GMs, unless they have other reasons, are going to wait until they get the offer they are looking for. But its kinda like a game of chicken because if they wait too long, then they might get desperate and take something less if they are locked into trading the guy.

So at this point, I would only trade Lee if we could get an improvement at 1B. There are simply too many options still left to fill the Cubs holes without taking a step down in production at another position.

Yeah, but not the best way or even a good way. I wouldnt want a 3-4-5 of my order to be Ramirez-Huff-Barrett or something like that. You need Lee. The only way I trade Lee to Tampa is if they send me back Young, Kazmir, Huff, Lugo, and Upton. They would never do that, but that's pretty much what it would take for me to trade away Derreck Lee.

Absolutely, there were many threads on this a few months ago. Look at what the brewers did with Sexson.

I would trade Lee for Julio Lugo, Aubrey Huff, and Jonny Gomes. Gomes alone would make that deal tempting. I think the real kicker is what kind of numbers you expect from Huff.

Lee is a very good player but he's not at an elite one IMO. I expect a .925-.950 OPS from him next season.

That has to be one of the top 5 worst fleecings ever. Especially when you consider that Sexson played about a month with Arizona.

He was an elite player last year, no denying that. Will he keep it up? I'm not certain.

Even if you dont consider that and have sexson put up his usual mashing, its still an organization changing move.

History suggests players who have huge years like that tend to regress but still play better then before.

Considering what he did last year and prior to that I will gladly take whatever Lee gives us then.
