Ironic how two staples, the Yanks and Cubs, have become 2nd thoughts in their hometowns. Williams has not only put together a team to win the WS in '05, but he's continued to revamp the team to make them sustainable and ready for a run in '06 and beyond. Minaya over the last two yrs. has spent money like a drunken sailor to make NY a Mets town and put the Yanks in the background (only slightly--NY papers will cover Steinbrenner blowing gas).

Wonder how much Williams and Minaya think about competing in the own city when making deals. Williams seems to be sticking it to Hendry every chance he gets and possibly will try to do so again by sticking his nose in any discussions with Tejada. The Mets have brought in players that in the past would have been in pinstripes without a doubt.

The Bulls get no respect. They have easily the most exciting (non-white sox) team in the city and they are probably fourth in the pecking order.

Order:

Bears

Cubs

White Sox

Bulls

For the record, before 2005, I'd have put the Bulls ahead of the White Sox

I'd argue that the Bears are FAR more exciting. The defense (last Sunday aside) is incredibly fun to watch.

The Bulls are alright. I was really excited when they had Curry in addition to all this other talent. I'm still excited about them, but those feelings have been tempered a bit. Deng is starting to show signs of taking the next step.

I like what the Bulls are doing, but the whole Curry fiasco was a major step backward for the franchise IMO. They can still continue improving if they find some kind of solution down low. And I think they'll continue to search.

I'll usually watch the Bulls when they're on, unless it's a terrible matchup. I will rarely miss a Cubs game if they are on, no matter who they play. And I plan my entire Sunday around the Bears. That should let you know where I stand with each team.

If all the Bulls' WGN games were on the Superstation like the Cubs' are, I might get more worked up over the Bulls. But something about having to follow all the games on CBS Sportsline annoys me and turns me off a little bit to that.

The Mets need to actually make the playoffs before anyone can say they have anything on the Yankees. And even then, NY will be a Yankees town. The Cubs will still outdraw the White Sox, but the Sox should definitely make Chicago less of a Cubs town after the World Series.

Now, if you want to actually see an example of a big name team start losing out in a two-market region, look at LA. The Dodgers are starting to play second fiddle to the Angels here, especially when you consider attendance and recent success.

The sad part for Cub fans is that they have regressed in talent last year, while the Sox won it all last year. Ive always respected effort and cajones, Williams approached the year with both. Hendry approached last year by trying to accomodate the manager, and management, and the Cubs went in reverse.

Same thing this year. I hate to say it, the Cubs may own the town, BUT the Sox have the hardware. Hendry and Baker both deserve to be fired, imho.
