Leaning heavily towards "yes". :P

The poll will end up being "no" due to the fact everyone can do it. Just as NASCAR is compared to driving back and forth to work.

Everyone can do it? Umm, incorrect. Everyone can do ANY sport, but not to the same skill level.

Oh, I agree. But when the argument is used in the debate for NASCAR that "I drive a car so it's not a sport" it is the same mentality.

NASCAR is physically demanding, Bowling isn't.

Lump bowling into catagories like ping-pong, golf, golden tee, etc. you could be 5'2" and weigh 500 pounds and still do well at it unlike sports that require physical endurance.

Different catagories of sport, bowling is just on the one at the btm of the totem pole.

You must be kidding. Do you actually think that most of these NASCAR drivers are actually in shape? Yes, some are, but a lot aren't.

Round is a shape.

Competitive bowling is more of a mind game than anything else. Like golf, you are your own worst enemy. How anyone else does has no effect on how well you do. It's mental, and it's coordination, as opposed to physical dominance (though sometimes it's the latter as well, if you've ever watched Robert Smith bowl), but it is still a sport. The fact that more Americans participate in this sport than any other definitely takes away from its novelty, but that doesn't remove the label of sport altogether.

Its really awesome getting in another team's head. You become really vocal and loud and cocky. Other team (who is better than you) becomes disjointed and loses focus. We then win. My buddies and I aren't cutthroat bowlers, but our emphasis is having fun and getting under people's skins. Not being just total jerks to them like rubbing stuff in their face, just being loud and obnoxious.

Not directed at you Mark but rant anyway:

You can be loud all you want. Punch or kick something in the middle of my backswing and someone is going to have to pull me off of you. Loud drunks don't bother me since most times my game gets turned up a notch (usually involves asking other party to put their money where their mouth is) and then they just become drunks but the punching and kicking of crap or dropping the ball on the floor is unacceptable and will be stopped.

Have you ever bowled say 100 games in a week for say 6 weeks straight? If not, do that and tell me that bowling is not physically demanding. Oh yeah during those 600 games you should be able to average around 225-230 since you more than likely are bowling in the same house.

Name one professional bowler who weighs anywhere near 500 lbs. Didn't think so. How about 400 lbs? 300 lbs? Other sports? What does Tractor Traylor weigh? What did Cecil Fielder tip the scales at when he played? Every NFL team has 10-15 guys who break the 300 lb barrier.

I find it humerous that because bowling allows all types to compete recreationally, so everyone assumes that the professions look like the guy next to at the local bowling alley on Jack-Pot bowling on Saturday night.

Hey I play ball down at the local park and there's a guy that is probably 6'0" and nearly 400 lbs (and he has a great outside shot) so I guess basketball must be in the same league.

Thank god, I haven't, My family would disown me. Have you?

Bowling is on a separate level than Basketball, Football, etc...

More importantly to me, it is a on a separate level than the sports I still am active in...

Jogging, Skiing, Baseball, Kayaking, Hiking, etc.

Those are much more demanding than Bowling, regardless of time consumption.

I have done it and its an incredible strain on your body. I once did 48 straight games at an overnight charity event where every strike you got, you'd donate 50 cents to the cause. (I wish I could remember which it was)

I punch and kick stuff all the time. Most of the time not on the lane, but I punch my towel, throw my towel, throw my rosin bag (preferably at the lame dude on the other team), etc.

What REALLY irritates me is when we get guys who after they throw a strike come onto your lane.

Pet Peeve..

Bowling is a sport, and it has nothing to do with how physically demanding it is. You use your physical abilities to do something measurable in an absolute sense. That's a sport.

Not anymore, I am a part-time bowler, bowl twice a month in a league, that averages around 205. In college the answer was yes as far as number of games thrown in a week. My argument was based on looking at the pro bowlers. These guys throw around 100 games a week (some practice, most in competition) and in order to make a paycheck have to average around 225.

Of your list there is only two sports the rest are recreational activities. And of those how many can you drink a beer while participating??

How can you call bowling a sport and hiking, skiing, jogging, a recreational activity?

Compare to those, bowling is like watching TV and eating ding dongs.

Only do that if the guy(s) on either side decide to keep jumping up on me. If you keep getting up on the approach while I'm taking the 2 seconds to get set and go, then you can bet at some point I am going to drift into your lane.

And I'd call you for a foul.

Look it up in the USBC rulebook. Another pet peeve: people who take 10 seconds to set themselves and go. This isn't freaking brain surgery here.

Very well done. Bowling, billiards, darts, curling..... Sports!

Seem 'em all on ESPN at one time or another too.....

I say any sport that the outcome is determined by a set scoring system is a sport. Any sport that uses judges (figure skating, gymnastics, cheerleading), not a sport.

Now that doesn't say those "non-sports" are any easier than actual sports, because I have friends who do all of those things, and they work just as hard as football, baseball, or basketball players.
