Brad Ausmus - C - Astros

Astros re-signed catcher Brad Ausmus to a two-year, $7.5 million contract.

The Astros' best opportunity to add offense was to upgrade from Ausmus at catcher or Adam Everett at shortstop, but they weren't interested in either possibility. Ausmus' 682 OPS in 2005 looks like his last gasp offensively -- it was his best mark in five years and he turns 37 in April. Amazingly, his new contract is worth nearly twice as much as the two-year, $4 million deal he just finished up. Unless it means Roger Clemens will rejoin the Astros -- preferably at a discount -- he isn't worth it. Dec. 13 - 3:23 pm et

That defense must be really valuable, because Ausmus is Neifi-esque with a bat.

But he can really catch the ball. . . I mean that literally, it's his main job.

Someone already managed to make this thread about Hendry:

That's about right. He's worth about 1.25 mil a year more than the venerable Neifi Perez. :^o

Every time I think about Brad Ausmus getting a nice fat contract, I can't help but think about the comments BP made in their book last year.

...With John Buck out of the way and a $3 million salary in '05, he'll be the starter again, but Ausmus may be the worst regular in baseball.
