Guys/Gals,

I'd like to devote a thread to new reportings on the Miggy front. It seems like the other ones get filled up quickly with trade ideas and gushings over the potential lineup. I think we're all in agreement that if we were in JH's shoes, we'd trade everything including the kitchen sink to get him and that he'd make our already nice lineup 10x better.

Let's only post new reports from various sources on this thread so that we can easily stay up to speed on the developments.

Thanks.

Sunday's Baltimore Sun Article

The Orioles have received several inquiries about shortstop Miguel Tejada, but at this point, the club's focus is on persuading the All-Star to back off his trade demand.

Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan spoke to Tejada at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, after he and other high-ranking club officials spent most of the day talking with Tejada's representatives, Diego Bentz and Fernando Cuza.

"We have spoken to Miguel Tejada and his representatives," he said. "We have spoken to his representatives for the better part of the day and the only way we can categorize it at this time, is that Miguel wants to win."

Asked if he was given the impression that Tejada feels that he can win in Baltimore, Flanagan declined to comment.

The Orioles have gotten calls from at least eight teams about the availability of Tejada, according to industry sources. One of those teams is the shortstop-less Boston Red Sox, who reportedly have offered All-Star outfield Manny Ramirez for Tejada.

The Angels and Cubs are also among the teams who are believed to be interested.

Asked about a possible Ramirez for Tejada swap, one high-ranking Orioles official said, "It's not going to happen."

Here is what we know so far. Tejada requested a trade from the O's. Bruce Miles has speculated that he would be a perfect fit with the Cubs and Hendry should pursue him. ESPN 1000 and XM Radio have also specifically mentioned the Cubs as potenial suitors. The Red Sox have reportedly offered Manny for Tejada straight up, and it hasn't been dismissed. Peter Angelos blasted Tejada in the press, making many speculate that it is likley the O's will grant Tejada his request for a trade. One obstacle in a trade for Tejada is that he has the right to demand a trade after 1 season if he is dealt.

What did Peter Angelos say?

From Saturday's Washington Post:

Angelos disputed Tejada's assessment that the team hasn't made enough moves to win, saying he couldn't justify throwing millions at closer B.J. Ryan and starting pitcher A.J. Burnett, who both signed with Toronto.

"[Tejada] has only been here two years, so I don't know what he's talking about," Angelos said. "We're not spending $50 million on a closer who's been a closer for only one year and $55 million for a guy who hasn't won more than 12 games in a year. If that's what his criticism is based on, it just shows he wouldn't be a great general manager."

the baltimore sun says it HAS been dismissed, quoting a high-ranking orioles official as saying "it ain't going to happen". and this makes sense. if they trade him within the division, that gives him 17/19 games per season to torment the orioles with his bat. probably not a smart thing to do if you're angelos, but then again, angelos isn't known for his baseball acumen.

Wow, thats harsh! He's being pretty specific about his resons for the non-signings too. He must be feeling the heat if he's trying to justify himself in the press like that.

Thanks for the link. :)

Peter Angelos didn't throw money at them because that wouldn't help him make more. He doesn't care about the team or winning, he just wants money. I hope he sells soon so that maybe a serious owner will be in Baltimore...

Now guys i want to say that i did not hear this, i saw this on cubstalk.com and found it very interesting.A guy posted what he heard on MLB Home Plate on XM. The show was with Holden Kushner and the guest was Jeff Zrisbec from the Baltimore Sun. Here are the interesting points according to Zrisbec:

1) The Ramirez for Tejada deal is very unlikely, less than 10 percent of happening.

2) According to Zrisbec the possible suitors are:

Angels- Cabrera and Shields

Mariners- No names mentioned

Cubs- Pie, Hill and Marshall

Both the host and the Baltimore Sun reporter think that if Tejada is traded at all, it will be to the cubs because of the following reasons:

a) The Orioles are ready to rebuild, they are trying to dump Javy Lopez and now will take as many pitching prospects they can get to work with Ramon Hernandez and Leo Mazzone.

B) Melvin Mora is sign below is market value and he and Hernandez would be the only significant payroll on the team if Tejada and Javy are traded.

C) They have been defeated in trying to win now, since losing out on Konerko, BJ Ryan and AJ Burnett.

D) The O's love Rich Hill and Marshall, and would love to get a bunch of prospects to compete in a few years. They are being fed tons of infofrom John Stockstill on the value of Hill and Pie.

E) The O's would like to have Kerry Wood, but are realistic that even if Wood agrees to go there, a contract extension would be needed to keep him for a while. Wood is not a deal breaker according to Zrisbec.

F) They also really like Angel Guzman insteed of Marshall, but Pie and Hill are the deal making prospects.

If this one has any legs, then giddyup...

nice try back2backjax, but this just became the ninth thread of general discussion regarding Tejada.

And in all nine threads you've complained about there being too many threads. Why not just let the mods decide how to do it?

So what? This one is about news. The others have become trade ideas and possible lineups. People don't like to scroll through pages after pages to see if anything new has come up.

Well, the 4 post JC Romero deal thread just got pushed off the first page....

Seriously though, it's not like it's pushing other discussions to obscurity.

Sunday Tribune Article

Industry sources say several teams already have called the Orioles after Tejada's surprise request in an Associated Press story Thursday, and the Cubs are thought to be among them although there was no official confirmation. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry refused any comment Saturday.

The Cubs' interest would be one of those "duh" things, so logical you would presume it. Almost any team would want a former MVP shortstop who hit .304 with 26 homers and 98 RBI last season.

They expect to start rookie Ronny Cedeno_who could not possibly equal Tejada statistics_at shortstop next season, although he would most likely play second base if Tejada were acquired.

The one real question is whether the Cubs would have enough talent to satisfy the Orioles, if they seriously begin discussions on trading the All-Star shortstop. The Orioles would like pitching but it's impossible to know exactly what the asking price would be from the Orioles because the Cubs don't have an equal-value contract to deal.

Of course, the Cubs would have competition from more than a handful of teams, including the Red Sox, who just traded their shortstop, Edgar Renteria.

Baltimore and Boston newspapers were full of Manny Ramirez-for-Tejada stories Saturday, a swap of two unhappy highly paid stars. Ramirez is making about $3 million more per season than Tejada but would the two teams take a chance of trading with an intra-division team?

Baltimore owner Peter Angelos told the Washington Post he would consider a trade within the division depending "on what you get back."

That settles it. I'm going on record as saying that Tejada is an Oriole or a Cub next season. All that stuff you heard from the CubsTalk poster is getting me pumped up. I would hope that Jim can get this done without giving up both Pie and Hill, but if that's what it takes to get a World Series-contending offense, then I say, do it.

I wonder if that's his way of saying the Yanks could have him if they sent ARod or Jeter back?

rrrrrraaarrrrrr.

three.

all the threads started overlapping, and this one was on it's way. usually the mods do something about that. I've never seen nine threads on one before.

and I only bring it up because I have been chastised by the mods in the past for starting threads related to topics that already have threads, and it seems to me a policy that makes sense.

can i become a MOD so i can move about 4 posts on this thread to the other "tejada speculation thread"?

until his status is resolved, i would like this to be a "new news thread".

thanks for your cooperation in this matter.
