Today is say so long to Nomar and Burntiz day.

We won't offer either arbitration I'm pretty sure.

I've been wearing my Nomar shirt all day today in hopes of a miracle.

How ironic...I wore my Nomar shirt yesterday as a farewell.

Of course, I wore a Cubs cap sideways today in tribute to Juan Pierre, so my sanity is in question.

If he accepts arbitration, you can only cut his salary by 20%. He'd be guaranteed 6.4 million as the floor. No one hardly ever gets a pay cut through the system.

Vance, people say this all the time, but I'm not certain that it's true.

I know for a fact that you cannot cut a 0-3 guy's salary by more than 20%. That makes sense, because those guys have no power whatsoever.

But why would arb eligible guys need that rule? The arbitration process should weed out any out-of-line offers. If the Cubs submitted $2 and Nomar submitted $7, the arbiter is certainly not going to choose the Cubs' ridiculous offer.

Does anyone know 100% for sure to whom the 20% cut rule applies?

No guesses, please. Just the facts, ma'am.

This is from the part of the CBA about 6 year free agents:

"If the Player accepts the offer to arbitrate, he shall be a signed

player for the next season and the parties will conduct a salary arbitration

proceeding under Article VI, provided, however, that the

rules concerning maximum salary reduction set forth in Article VI

shall be inapplicable and the parties shall be required to exchange

figures on the last day established for the exchange of salary arbitration

figures under Article VI."

That's top notch, PV. Thanks a lot.

So if we don't offer Nomar arbitration then we wont have the right to sign him again until May 1st, is that correct?

Yes.

I believe the Cubs have to offer arbitration to macias or lose him to free agency.

Yes, but the deadline for doing that is December 20th, not today.

Why?

Because he's arb eligible, not a free agent.

Because he has fewer than six complete years of major league service time.

As much as Hendry is willing to overpay to have depth in the rotation, why not offer arby to Nomar? If he accepts, he will be insurance for the oft-injured ARam. If he declines, you get an extra draft pick to replace the ones foolishly given up for relievers. Plus, we really wouldn't be on the hook for $8M. To keep the math simple, let's say the arbitrator granted a pay raise to $9M, or $1.5M per month. The Cubs would have to keep him until 6/15, so they'd be on the hook for $3.75M of the $9M. At which point, if they've used him little enough for him to stay healthy, he could be traded for whatever is required at the time.

Whew, I'm not the only one. Can someone let me know how I can CC Hendry on this post?

and even that would imply a raise from last year, which i cant see. offer 6 million, which is just 1 a month, and see what happens. not overspending on neifi would have given us some flexibility here.

I really think signing Nomar would be a good thing. Give him a two year deal. He can start at SS and backup ARam as well. I would do it.

Did the Cubs offer Patterson arbitration? Wouldn't they have to if they wanted to retain his rights?

I suppose they have as much as said they will offer Hairston arbitration.

The Cubs have until the 20th with both Patterson and Hairston.

December 7th - Cubs need to decide whether to offer arbitration to Jeromy Burnitz, Nomar Garciaparra, and Chad Fox.

December 20th - Cubs need to decide whether to offer arbitration to Juan Pierre, Corey Patterson, Jerry Hairston, Jr., Jose Macias, and Carlos Zambrano.

Let's hope that closes this issue.

Is there a good list of service time for players somewhere?

I don't know if he's updated for this past season or not, but all those figures are accurate. I wish I could get my hands on a Red and Green book.

Whatever happened to that database that you (I think) put together here on NSBB. That was a really cool thing. Is it still alive and well or what?
