As much as Hendry is willing to overpay to have depth in the rotation, why not offer arby to Nomar? If he accepts, he will be insurance for the oft-injured ARam. If he declines, you get an extra draft pick to replace the ones foolishly given up for relievers. Plus, we really wouldn't be on the hook for $8M. To keep the math simple, let's say the arbitrator granted a pay raise to $9M, or $1.5M per month. The Cubs would have to keep him until 6/15, so they'd be on the hook for $3.75M of the $9M. At which point, if they've used him little enough for him to stay healthy, he could be traded for whatever is required at the time.

Or if he gets hurt, they have millions riding the DL...

You know Dusty will give him ample playing time...and he'll either be productive or hurt. If he's productive, I can't see him getting traded. It'll mean more bench time for RonnyC.

Did the Cubs offer arbitration to Burnitz? The story on the Tribune's web site says they did not offer it to Nomar, so he's definitely gone, but no mention in the story of Burnitz or Chad Fox.

Every reoprt I've heard said they did not offer arby to Burnitz.

The Cubs also effectively cut ties with Garciaparra, Burnitz and Chad Fox on Wednesday. The team decided it would not offer arbitration to the three, which means they cannot negotiate with the players again until May 1.

Were they still taking up spots on the 40 man prior to this?

Dotel wasn't offered arbitration, as expected. I think he'd be a nice pickup for the bullpen.

A Jim Hendry Special...

Is there a good list of service time for players somewhere?

mlbcontracts.blogspot.com

I don't know if he's updated for this past season or not, but all those figures are accurate. I wish I could get my hands on a Red and Green book.

Whatever happened to that database that you (I think) put together here on NSBB. That was a really cool thing. Is it still alive and well or what?

It's still up there, but it hasn't been updated or added to in a while. Lack of time and laziness are the main culprits. I'm hoping to put in a dent in it over Winter Break.
