"To put a deadline to have a leadoff hitter by 4:00 on Thursday would be foolish, as some of the better deals we have made have come after the Winter meetings".

"We'd obviously be disappointed if we didn't have a leadoff hitter by opening day".

I like this idea. Don't rush into a trade Jim and get fleeced!!

Yes. Wait until everyone is gone instead.

Get used to such quotes, this is exactly the type of quote we'll read after these Winter Meetings and Hendry comes away empty handed. A few of us are optimistic but, alas I'm not one of them, I knew we'd end reading this kind of nonsense from Hendry...

What is with the infatuation with a leadoff hitter? Hey Jim, try putting together a lineup with 8 good hitters, then worry about where they bat.

More accurately, worry about where your manager will bat them

I don't get it either. I personally like guys like Lugo, Wilkerson, Bradley because they're really capable of hitting anywhere in the lineup, #1 or #2, #5-#8 (assuming 3/4 is set with Lee/Ramirez).

What I don't think the Cubs understand is that speed doesn't equal leadoff hitter. A prime example of that is the Cubs interest in Gathwright. He's fast, but he's not a leadoff hitter.

Get someone like Wilkerson and plug him in the leadoff spot and we'll be fine. We've never been a running team anyway, at least Wilkerson gets on base and we need people on base to be successful, obviously.

Somehow the postive correlation between number of base runners, speed be damned, and number of runs scored is lost on Hendry and Company.

That's not entirely true. Those guys Tinker, Evers & Chance were a bunch of jack rabbits !!

No, you're right lets make a trade JUST to make a trade andget fleeced on so that it screws us for years to come, I like that idea better.

Talk about looking for something to complain about.

Hendry makes a statement implying that he's not going to jump all over the first deal that is presented to him, but rather he'll wait for a GOOD deal to come to surface... so let's complain about it.

I think people here just need an adjustment period. After all, we're not used to Hendry saying something intelligent.

I'm trying my best to give JH the benefit of the doubt here. I've been mostly optimistic open minded to this point, but it looks a lot like he's planting the seeds now for his excuses on Friday for not doing squat.

I'm trying to be overly critical but, as you've said above, it reads as if he's trying to prepare the media and fans for a trainload of excuses come Friday. Isn't this similiar to last year? After having done nothing, came out of the Winter Meetings, feed us some garbage about trades rarely ever occuring during the Winter Meetings. Waited to last minute, and finally, signed Burnitz? This year it'll be Jacque Jones, Preston Wilson or Juan Encarncaion...

No, this year will probably be Burnitz again...

Well, we'll know tomorrow.
