It's been widely believed that David Wells would be traded back to the Padres, and according to the Boston Herald, a swap of Loretta for Wells even up is being discussed.

The Sox met with the Padres last night and were making some progress on a David Wells deal. A trade to San Diego remains Wells’ favorite option, and there was considerable talk of the Sox focusing on an even swap of Wells for second baseman Mark Loretta.

They were talking this morning on XM that Mirabelli is also someone the Padres are interested in.

I've always liked Loretta and dispised Wells. Didn't SD have a chance to sign Wells for less when he was a free agent last off season?

Yes. I have a thread floating around here somewhere about how badly SD botched the whole, Dave Roberts, David Wells, Woody Williams circle of fun.

I don't understand why the Padres are so set on trading Loretta especially for David Wells who is 40.

I'm going to assume that the Padres feel that Josh Barfield is ready to be promoted. I'm also going to assume that they didn't believe he was ready to be promoted until Brian Giles signed for 10m a year for the next several years, which in turn makes Barfield's league minimum wage look a lot better than Loretta's 3-4m, or however much it is.

Not to mention the fact that Wells will be making more for the Padres this year than they were willing to give him last year.

From Rotoworld:

David Wells - S - Red Sox

A source told the New York Daily News that David Wells would likely become a Dodger, not a Padre, today.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Red Sox could then trade catcher Doug Mirabelli to the Padres for Mark Loretta. Dec. 6 - 11:42 am et Source: New York Daily News

Aren't Loretta and Mueller essentially the same player?

Loretta can play a decent 2B, Mueller is an unknown.

Aye - not only that, but Mueller not only doesn't want to play 2B, but the pivot causes him problems because of his legs/knees and I doubt he would be able to hold up with extended use there.
