What's wrong with this picture? Deivi Cruz: $800,000. Neifi Perez: $3,000,000.

According to The Associated Press, the Cardinals have signed infielder Deivi Cruz to a one-year, $800,000 contract.

Cruz would earn an additional $50,000 for playing 120 games and $50,000 each for 300 and 350 plate appearances. At 33, Cruz is no longer an above average defender around the infield, and he hit just .265/.298/.373 in 260 AB last season. He's not so bad as a sixth infielder. Assuming that the Cardinals sign a second baseman and keep Hector Luna as a utilityman, Cruz won't get a chance to do a lot of damage. Dec. 5 - 8:26 pm et

Let's not discuss. Let's just forget you even asked that question. :x

The difference is, Neifi will get a whole heck of a lot more AB's than Deivi thanks to Dusty's love for him and if Hendry trades Walker and doesn't get a SS, Neifi will be a regular.

I would say that Deivi Cruz will instantly become an All-Star but since the Cardinals won't have any injuries to Eckstein to facilitate that, I'll just say that he will now be the best backup middle IF in baseball.

A sub-300 career OBP.

Can he play defense?

This came as a complete shock to me. Why the hell would they get this guy?

To answer your question-no. But he's there to replace Nunez.

You would think.

However, Hector Luna is probably not going to be our starting second baseman. Only if we were to have signed Giles or Burnett... So, in reality, Luna (who can play third, 2nd, shortstop and the outfield) would've assumed Nunez's role).

I don't understand this at all. Not one bit... unless they're going to declare Luna starter. Which they wouldn't do... they'd give him an opportunity to earn it, but...

This offseason got really crappy, really quickly.

Dont forget.. They also got Gary Bennett as their backup catcher.. Yeah, the same guy in 03 that Pujols punched..

Pujols and Gary will make up and Bennett will hit 15 homers in 100 AB.

Cruz's career stats suck, but they're still a lot better than Neifi's because Neifi has gotten 57% of his career at bats with the Rockies. A choice between Cruz at 1yr/$800K and Neifi at 2ys/$5M is a no-brainer, unless you're Jim Hendry.

Actually, this looks like the kind of deal that Hendry would sign to a MINOR LEAGUE contract (remember, that is how the whole Neifi thing started). Then, in May when Cedeno is struggling (7-8 consecutive ABs without a double) he would be sent down to work on his swing and a "proven veteran" would be pulled up from Iowa where his "experience" will help the club beyond his actual ability and his "intangibles" will lead to victory.\

Hendry is VASTLY overpaying for Neifi (I still say offer him to Bowden for a dixie cup of used tobacco juice and agree to pay $1M of his salary and see if he bites), but the MAIN problem I have with the signing of Perez is Baker's annoying habit of playing him. As a late inning defensive replacement for Walker or something like that I am fine. It is the thought of another season of watching him get 600+ PA while Cedeno (whose talent is vastly greater and ceiling is immeasurably higher) warbles away on the bench and/or at Iowa.

It still cracks me up that this argument keeps popping up now even though Neifi will make the same next year that he made in 2005. He was vastly overpaid this past season, but I don't recall anyone saying anything about it...

You don't? It was said, a lot. But he was only making $1 million guaranteed in the beginning. After he started qualifying for the bonuses things got louder. He also has a 2 year deal now, taking him into his mid 30s, when he's likely to be as bad as he was when SF simply released him.

There was quite a long thread about it actually. And, yes, there probably was less anquish only because 1 million was all that was guaranteed. But I know I was concerned with the incentives in that deal. If we could search for the thread, there would be ample evidence to support that a number of posters weren't happy with Neifi being signed last offseason either.
