Can someone explain to me why Kearns is a better option than Mench who has been called a 4th OF?

Kearns:

Age 25

Career: 266/360/461

2005: 240/333/452

Mench

Age 27

Career: 272/334/484

2005: 264/328/469

Kearns had one really good year and nothing spectacular after that. Mench has been much more consistent.

Anyone who would be in favor of Kearns should surely view Mench in the same light.

They're in the same class offensively. Defensively, though, Mench is a LF who would be masquerading as a RF. Kearns is a top RF defender.

Right.

Also Kearns still has the greater upside. Those numbers are similar, but Kearns has done that while being injured at times and stuck in an overly crowded outfield where consistent playing time was hard to find. Last year when given more regular time post All-Star break he put up an .850 OPS.

Mench has a little more power, Kearns will get on base at a higher rate. Kearns is the more complete player.

Mench has battled injuries as well. Kearns is a little more athletic, but so is Corey Patterson. That doesn't always translate into success. Mench has been more consistent. Kearns is living off a reputation from his one good season.

It's not just that one season and it's not just athleticism. The defensive difference just can't be overlooked nor can the age. Mench will be turning 28 in a month and Kearns is still 25 until late May. Mench had his best Major League season at age 26, which is what Kearns will be for the last 4 months of next season.

Last year their numbers were almost identical even though Kearns is over 2 years younger and was juggled around during the first half. Again when given close to regular playing he put up an .850 OPS.

There's just more upside with Kearns than Mench.

Dont forget that the Trib had Kearns saying that he wanted to play for the Cubs, and he loved Wrigley.

If you get a guy wanting to play for you, I can bet his stats will be good.

Says the guy with a picture ripping on Neifi, Macias and Blanco?

All three of those guys want to play for Dusty and the Cubs.

Austin Kearns - OF - Reds

Cubs GM Jim Hendry said today that he hasn't had any discussions with the Reds regarding one of the team's outfielders.

There were radio rumors today about Austin Kearns being offered to the Cubs for Sergio Mitre and another pitcher. This makes it seem as though there were no truth to them. Dec. 5 - 11:16 pm et

Consider the source there. I would be willing to bet that nearly every MLB team has had discussions with the Reds about one of their outfielders. The radio report may be incorrect, but I'm sure there have at least been very basic discussions about the Reds crowded outfield.

Hawkins also wanted to be a Cub. Turns out he didn't wanna be a Cubs closer though...

Maybe we could say that players with actual talent who want to play for the Cubs, but only in the position they want... do well.

So what exactly is Hendry doing during the GM meetings? Is he ordering pizza and renting movies in his hotel room?

Kearns

Before ASB: .224/.306/.394/.700

After ASB: .253/.353/.498/.851

Mench

Home: .273/.340/.486/.826

Away: .254/.317/.452/.766

Before ASB: .291/.356/.551/.907

After ASB: .235/.300/.382/.682

Mench is pretty decent in Ameriquest. As bad as Kearns played in the first half of 2005, Mench played worse in the second half. But hey, Kearns got sent down, lol.

Add in Kearns's defense and I don't see how the two should be viewed in the same light.

Kearns has also had injuries (which do scare me) and a crowded OF to deal with.

mlbtraderumors.com (I know) posted that Bruce Levine says a trade for Kearns is still in the works, only with Williams replacing Mitre.

Oh yes a worse trade than the one which was announced...

Could you post Kearns home-away splits too. GABP is also a hitter's heaven.

Todd Hundley had enough talent to hit 40 homers in a season, wanted to play for the Cubs, played catcher and was probably the worst regular position player in the history of the franchise.

So you're saying theres no proof to such a strategy! (That was kinda my point by making so many 'rules' to it)

They also say we're pursuing Luis Gonzalez.

Good thing mlbtraderumors is never accurate.
