  1. I would like the Cubs to make a move for Brendan Harris. He would be a nice utility infielder and occasional spot starter.
  2. Anybody see Derrek Lee getting extended during season training? I really doubt he's gonna get traded but I can see Hendry offering him a monster contract in March that we'll possibly be regretting by 2009.
  3. I'm fully expecting the Cubs to sign Furcal this off-season. For no other reason than the Cubs spending a lot of money on a position that can be easily filled by player(s) that would cost a lot less. Meanwhile the OF needs a complete overhaul and the money being spent on a SS could be spent on Giles and/or trading for an established slugger with a larger contract.
  4. How is Boston already taking trade when they just lost their GM and their asst. GM?
  5. Zambrano is probably the only player on the current Cubs roster that I would not trade for Abreu.
  6. no worries, he'll start winning these when he's 38 or so. He needs to hire someone to start talking up his leadership abilities, then start hitting for a low 600s OPS, that should do the trick. Pitchers need to talk about what a great game he calls.
  7. I just started drooling. By the way, BgBird, welcome from a fellow recent addition to the board! Thanks MPrior. I've posted before, I just changed my screen name. I think you can PM Tim and he can change your name without losing all your old info.
  8. Aren't they tired of McKeon now? Didn't Burnett have a meltdown? Apparently, his way of running things has run thin. He was dang good when hired in 2003 though. That team caught fire under McKeon. Talent + luck + chemistry = level of success Obviously talent is by far the most important factor, but a team usually needs a little of the other 2 in order to win it all. The media tends to overvalue chemistry tho. Maybe they did tired of McKeon but would it change that much over less than 2 seasons? If it was so successul before, why would it change so quickly? Burnett did have a meltdown and I think a big part of his problem with the organization was with McKeon. I can't argue with the success of the '03 Marlins and McKeon deserves his share of success but to credit him over the abundance of pitching talent on the team is wrong. I agree with the media overvaluing chemistry. It doesn't hurt to have it but I really don't see it having a big effect of the performance of the players on the field.
  9. So Furcal is Neifi's protege?   Once Furcal signs, you can already hear him campaigning to re-sign his favorite double play combo.
  10. It's remaining at $92m. Accounting for the changes listed in the thread, STL might only have about $20m to play around with despite having some big need positions. They don't have the farm system to effectively fill those holes from within, so if they get Giles, they will potentially be short-changing their potential to fill holes in the rotation, bullpen, and in the lineup in a big way. I like to hear this...reasons why the Cards won't sign Giles.. I love it.. With our luck, he'll take his salary deferred for 50 years to play for the "world's greatest fans." Hometown discount? 3 years/3 mill per?
  11. In a similar article posted at yahoosports.com, it mentions that Furcal can play 2nd because he's done it before allowing everyone's favorite SS to continue playing shortstop in winterball.
  12. Why did the Marlins fall apart this past season under the same leadership of Jack McKeon? They had good chemistry in '03 and didn't this year? How can a team like the White Sox win the World Series and have malcontents like Everett, Marte and Pierzynski playing key roles? It seems chemistry is good only when people see them laughing and joking around in the dugout, drinking Jack Daniels before games, or listening to bad '80's hair band music together on team flights. We, as fans, don't really have any insight into what happens behind the scenes in a clubhouse. Numerous players came out in support of LaTroy Hawkins this year after he was traded and said he was a great teammate, but to most fans he appeared to be aloof. Team chemistry is just added when people are looking for a reason why certain teams are successful.
  13. Has he learned nothing from last off season? Chemistry is such overrated garbage. Tell the 05 White Sox, 04 Red Sox, 03 Marlins, 02 Angels and the 96-2000 Yankees that. I will tell them that and I won't forget to mention how those teams had either very strong pitching and/or the ability to score a lot of runs. I have no problem with a team liking each other but I think its ridiculous to think that's the reason why they were successful. My comment was geared at Hendry for trying to rid this team of all its malcontents after the '04 season.(Sosa, Mercker, Alou, and Farnsworth) That sure didn't work for the '05 season. Right after signing a player, I'd prefer if my GM didn't use "he's a very good clubhouse guy" as a major reason why he was signed.
  14. Has he learned nothing from last off season? Chemistry is such overrated garbage.
  15. I think we're getting be looking back at this thread in August and really regret this signing.
  16. Here's the official released schedule from cubs.com http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/chc/schedule/tentative_2006_season_schedule.jsp
  17. I have next week's game against the Saints listed as a noon game, but I thought I saw a commercial for it being a 3:00 game. Anybody know which is correct? I'm assuming if its at 3:00, its because of rescheduling for Hurricane Katrina.
  18. Very little credibility. I don't think there has ever been a major rumor that he has reportered (whether it involved the Cubs or Pete Rose being reinstated) that has turned out to be true. Will Carroll also isn't a beat reporter. He doesn't try to break rumors or news. He's always been more of an analyst than a reporter. I don't think it's fair to say he has very little credibility because he's never broken a major rumor that came true. Well, let me put it this way then, when it comes to rumors of this sort, Will "Pete Rose will be reinstated" Carroll has little credibility. Rumors of this sort? The Pete Rose piece was not based on inside information...it wasn't a breaking piece, it wasn't based on supposed inside information, it was an editorial, based on his opinion, given what information was publicly available. He thought Rose would be reinstated, and was wrong. Big deal, the man's credibility shouldn't be affected by anything such as that. Offering an opinion in an editorial has no bearing as to his credibility when he says he knows something happened. Also, judging a writer on one wrong guess is a little myopic. If he says he's involved in the appeal process for someone that tested positive, there's no reason to doubt him. I sincerely doubt he's making the whole story up. Maybe two different articles are being discussed. There's no question that Carroll learned from sources that Rose was to be reinstated and he wrote an article breaking the story. Here's the opening paragraph from the article dated August 12th 2003
  19. The most interesting part of the article is this quote from Carroll: Why would a baseball writer be involved in the appeal of baseball steriod suspension?
