  1. I would as well. However I think the off season will look way more like Giolitto or Montgomery and then maybe sign Hoskins. I don’t give them any chance on Yamamoto and maybe a 1% chance on a Soto trade. Maybe (10% chance) they work something out for Alonso. But depending on his cost to acquire, I might rather have Hoskins for just money, or a loss of.a second round pick if the Phillies give him a QO. TBH I am not even sure they will sign any starting pitchers if Stroman and Hendricks are retained.
  2. Honestly, if the Mets are ridiculous in their ask for Alonso I would be fine with signing Hoskins instead. Maybe use some prospects for a trade for a controlled pitcher. I have no issue trading prospects. However I do have an issue o repaying when you can just spend money to get a guy who is a very good offensive player. He isn’t Alonso. I get that. But he is a big upgrade at 1st for the Cubs. Hoskins wouks also cost less as far as salary goes. So maybe they can add another decent bat.
  3. So in 2018 he was well thought of. What happened? Why is he not talked about, except by you?
  4. And yet everyone seems to love Horton and no one seems to mention Gallardo. So what do you know that scouts seem to be missing? He isn’t even listed in the top 30 cubs prospect list.
  5. Gallardo? I don’t see him factoring in at all for at least 3 years, if at all. But besides the fiys yiu mentioned they do have Assad, Wesnicki and I am sure they will have Smyly. So there is some BOR depth. I do expect we might see Horton next year if he does well in the minors.
  6. Why would Houston consider moving Tucker. I don’t see that happening.
  7. I would be fine with Morel learning 3rd and playing it full time. He is a guy who can hit 35 homers. They need a power hitter in the line up. And he is here already and cheap. We are all discussing guys like Soto, Alonso, Bellinger and Ohtani and the fact is they probably won’t end up with any of them. Might end up guys like Chapman, Hoskins, Candelario, Bader etc…. But no matter who they get they need some young guys to step forward. I think Morel is the obvious best option for that happening. As for pitchers, I am not sure they will sign any (if Stroman comes back and if they re-up Hendricks). But if they do I would expect someone like Montgomery is far more likely than Nola or the ace from Japan.
  8. You can always cherry pick a contract to suggest if this guy made this much how can you give the other guy this much. Sure, Betts signed for less that what Soto will probably get. He also signed a few years ago. But why not use Judge. who at 30 signed a 9 year deal at $40M a year. Bogaerts who got along $30M a year until he is 40. Soto will probably get $35M (at least) and for 10-12 years. And that will be a reasonable contract at this time.
  9. Didn’t Vlad Jr win a gold glove?
  10. And Ohtani will cost way more because he MIGHT pitch again. I am also not sure any team would want him playing first next year and risk further injury.
  11. I don’t like 4 or 5 years of Morel for one year of Alonso. If they trade Morel for him they have to extend him. If they can do so for 6 years I would be fine with him. Rumor was he was looking for 10. I think at 10 you will be stuck with 4 very overpaid seasons. If the Mets would find 2 or 3 45FV prospects they would take in an Alonso package I would be ok with that, even if they didn’t extend him. I just don’t want him for 10 years. 6 would be a sweet spot.
  12. I am moving away from Alonso. I just think a long term deal for him ends poorly. I don’t see him that good in his mid 30’s. And he is going to want want at least 7 years if they plan on signing him. And if they don’t sign him to an extension I would have to lose Morel for 1 year.
  13. In 2016 at 33 years old Cabrera got 8/$240M to DH and play 1st. I think Freeman would have gotten much more, and I think it is fine if Soto, at 25 get even more than that. And I couldn’t care less what position they put him at.
  14. I do think you are making a bit too much of what a position should be paid. No one else has an OPS+ 157 at 25 years old. He is a generational talent offensively. He should get paid a lot of money for a lot of years no mattered where he plays. More than Freemen, more than Betts, more than Turner and Judge. I don’t like the idea of moving him because I only want him to focus on hitting. And I also think it would be easier to move Happ. But if they did move him to 1st or if he was primarily a DH, he would still be worth a 10-12 year deal in the nighbirhiod of $400M. Maybe $35M a year.
  15. I think moving Happ to first is an easier move for him then moving Soto. Happ was drafted as a second baseman. He has played the infield. This has nothing to do with the money Soto is making. I think Happ would be a better first baseman than Soto, PERIOD. The question would be what is a better defensive team, Happ at 1st and Soto in left or vice versa. For me, I would take Happ at 1st. I think that is a better defense.
  16. So then put him at 1st. Even if they give Mervis another chance rotate Mervis and Happ at 1st and DH. Also DH Soto and Suzuki and let Happ fill in as a corner outfielder. Honestly I don’t see a problem figuring out what to do with Soto. Just get him in the line up. Even if he did DH a few years thise corner guys are not going to be here forever. Soto would be back in the outfield full time by the time he is 28. Just trade for him and figure it out.
  17. So base on position value what does Ohtani make if he is only a DH?
  18. I agree it is a bad idea to sign a guy and then move him to a position he never played. But I would still trade for him. Why can’t Happ move to 1st? At least he came up as a second baseman. I imagine he could do that. And if not, trade Happ for an actual first baseman. Or trade him for a young arm and sign Candelario to play 1st or 3rd. See if Morel can handle 3rd and/or if Mervis can handle 1st. But this time give Mercis a real chance. Candelario is insurance in the event one of them fails. I think people are thinking way too much in what to do with Soto if we get him. Just get him and figure out the pieces after that. If both Morel and Mervis can handle the corners and Happ isn’t traded yiu figure out who is the DH and just rotate the position. Happ won’t be here forever. So even if Soto did DH half the time, in a few years he would be back in right field no matter any scenario.
  19. Ok. Got it. Well if they are going for young talent I think you go to SD and trade for Soto. Sign him for 10 years. Pay what is needed to get that done. Then sign Yamamoto. Fill the roster accordingly. Soto could DH or the Cubs can trade either Happ or Suzuki for a 1st baseman of equal value and let Soto play a corner outfield spot. I would let Morel play 3rd full time. They should be working with him now on how to play 3rd. Maybe sign Bader as insurance on PCA. Give Mervis the job at first if you don’t trade for a first baseman.
  20. Maybe I missed something. Who is this 24 yr old free agent you want?
  21. The cost of Alonso should not change just because a team plans on extending him. He is still a guy on the last year of his contract. I think if the Cubs do trade and extend him they will not be signing another high end long year free agent. They would probably go with PCA in center and maybe sign someone like Bader as insurance.
  22. This works for me. I am just not sure they will spend the money. Even if they didn’t extend Alonso, I feel there isn’t room in the budget next year. Levine said they were thinking of pairing him with Bellinger. That would be a very solid line up next year. I suppose PCA gets another year in the minors and if Alonso leaves PCA comes up to play center and Bellinger moves over to first. But that is a year away so a lot can happen. As for 24’ if that added Alonso and his salary and also Bellinger they don’t really have any other money to spend. Not even sure they can fit those two in. Does Kyle come back? Do they trot out the same rotation? I know Horton is coming. I know Wicks and Assad had good years. I know Wisnecki might be given another chance. But is that the rotation they want? And what about the pen? So they piece it together again? Have to admit the line up would be good. You would have to cover 3rd and DH. Maybe Mervis is given another chance? I feel Morel should cover one of those spots. The last spot would be between Madrigal, Mervis, maybe Canario, a different young guy, Wisdom(hope not) or a smaller FA signing or trade. But is pitching going to be enough?
  23. Yes, if they don’t resign Bellinger than if Hoskins is healthy I would be fine with him. Sign him and maybe Bader as insurance for PCA. Then spend whatever is left on pitching. Morel should work on playing 3rd base all off season.
  24. You have an awful lot of unproven players in your team moving forward. While I would be ok with Morel spending all off season learning 3rd base I still want a big bat. I think Hoskins makes a lot of sense. He can play first and DH. If Mervis comes up and does well, he and Hoskins can split 1st and DH. As for PCA in center, I am fine with them doing that, but if they do I would like someone like Bader signed as well as a perfect fall back if PCA falters. For me a solid off season would be Hoskins/Bader and then a qualitybsyatting pitcher. And also some pen arms.
  25. While I would be fine with this, I just don’t see the Cubs trading for Alonso. First, what do they lose for him? For one year of Alonso, I wouldn’t deal that much. But I am sure the Mets will ask for a lot. And from what is being reported, Alonso is looking for a long term deal. I don’t see the Cubs commuting the years to him. I do feel they will be in on Chapman. I agree Mervis should be given a chance next year but they need someone who can fill in if he falters. I also like the Bader idea. He is good security in the event PCA struggles. Also, instead of Alonso what about Hoskins? How bad was his injury? Wouldn’t he be a good alternative to Alonso? And they don’t lose a prospect. He has always put up very solid offensive numbers.
