Sadly we l know one of Dusty’s game 7 loses all too well.

Didn’t fact check this, but I heard it reported that Bochy never lost a game 7 and Dusty never won one.

Where I am struggling with what you are saying is when you say “a mid 30’s player jumps way up in performance”. He didn’t jump up in performance. He has always been very good. He has been the same pitcher every year. His era the precious 3 years was actually better than last year. He is no more likely to regress than any pitcher is, IMO. I do agree they had good health all year. I also agree that after next year they will probably have to replace him too, good or bad. But if I was a gambling man I would bet Wheeler will be a NL top 10 starting pitcher again next year, barring an injury.

I would love it if Wheeler was on the Cubs next year. I would take my chances on him being a top 10 starter in the NL, again. And I am sure the Phillies are not worried about him slipping.

Why wouldn’t you expect Wheeler to repeat his 23’ season? He has actually been better than that the years before 23’. I think he is only signed they next year. That might be the problem. But as for him being good, I don’t see why he won’t be.
  6. Not going to get an argument out of me. I agree 100%. But I also have followed this team a long time. And I have seen how the FO and ownership work. My concern will be the FO suggesting they like their young guys to fill whatever spots they need.
  7. The issue is if Stroman comes back and they sign Hendricks they have 4 veterans in the rotation. And the payroll of the rotation is pretty high. You then have Wicks, Aasad and Wesnecki as well as other young guys soon to be on the tram. They may justify not going after a TOR guy because of what they have. That is my concern if they keep Hendricks.
  8. That is kind of my point. I think IF Hendricks is completely healthy you will see a guy throw 180 innings at around a 3.40-3.85 era. Solid starter. Just not so sure they don’t need more than that. They need a TOR starter, IMO.
  9. Probably more wishful thinking than anything else, tbh. However I do feel at times we tend to write a guy out the first sign of decline. And often it is just nagging injuries. If you look at those years, actually Kyle was only bad for the last 2 months of 21’ and then bad in only 16 starts in 22’, when they finally took him out of the rotation and put him on the IL for good. In 21’ he was trending towards a typical Kyle year. At the end of July he was at a 3.71 era. I think between losing all the guys you played with for so long and just being on a bad team that last 2 months of the season was more of an anomoly. As for 22’ if I remember correctly (and I may not) I feel he had nagging problems all year until they finally decided he has enough to get him out of the rotation. I just feel last year was more of the old Kyle and I also feel it is more likely repeated than his last half of 21’ and the 22’ season. I think he will be much closer to a 3.50 guy than a 4.80 guy. So a number 3 or very good #4 starter. But, again, the issue with me is the Cubs need a frond or the rotation guy. So even a decent Kyle may not be worth signing if it prevents them from going after a TOR guy.
  10. I think more accurate is he was injured in 21’ and 22’. And that affected his performance. I think he is more of a MOR starter then a BOR starter. I do expect he would be 3.50-4.00 era moving forward. That said, I feel they need a TOR starter. Not a 3-4 guy. I guess he is ok if they extend him on a 2/$25M, but I hope that doesn’t take them out of a TOR starter. Nola or Yamamoto. Or maybe a little less like Montgomery.

For everyone who bitches about Ross, maybe they should watch the Phillies more. Given the choice of Ross or Rhomas, I think I would take Ross. Phillies manager SUCKS!!!!
  12. At the very least I hope they have him start out at 1st/DH. I am fine if they get someone like Hoskins and roll with him AND Mervis. Or if they sign Candelario let him go between 1st, 3rd and DH and go with Mervis and Morel at 1st, 3rd and DH as well. it might be time to count on some young guys. Add one bat and use some young talent to fill the rest of the line up. unless, of course, if they traded for Soto. To me that is the best case, somewhat realistic, scenario. Figure out where to play him. Could be first, left and DH and Mervis can still be a guy who plays in 70-80% of the games.
  13. That $25M for Bellinger is not the teams option. The only person who will decide on Bellinger is Bellinger. And he isn’t going to come back for the one year.
  14. Kyle is fine. He can be a decent pitcher for his contract. Personally I think the Cubs won’t take the option but then try resigning him around $13M. Which is ok, as far as him earning his pay. The issue is the Cubs need someone better than that. They need a Nola or a Yamamoto to be the #1 pitcher. Then follow with Steele, Stroman(if he stays) and Tallion. That is a solid top 3. And I think Tallion will be much better next year. At the very least a solid #4. Then that last spot goes to a kid. I think if they keep Hendricks everyone moves up one spot and Hendricks slots at 4. Not nearly as good. And I doubt they sign a #1 if both Stroman and Kyle are on the team. Now, if Stoman opts out I would be ok with keeping Kyle as long as they used the Stroman money + to go out and get a #1.

Should have traded for Trout 6 years ago too. Maybe should have signed Soto when he was a teenager or Scherzer (too)the year they signed Lester. All as likely as them getting Harper. Funny thing is, if they signed Harper back then people would have been complaining about spending that money on a cocky overrated ballplayer. And they would have been complaining about how he will suck when he is 36.

This narrative in Harper is pointless. The Cubs were NEVER in on Harper. It was never a real consideration. Harper was going to take the longest and most money contract, period. Cubs were never going to be that for him. Sure, it would have been awesome to have him. I agree. But not getting him is no different than not gettting Betts. I don’t see anyone suggesting the Cubs made a huge mistake not getting Betts. And again, I would love Betts too. As for Schwarber and Castellanos, I will take the Cubs corner outfielders over those guys. Cubs did fine without those guys.
  17. It is a $16M decision if they don’t work something else out with him. Like not take the option but then sign him for something like $12m with a player option the next year. Similar to the Smyly deal. Personally I would let him go and use that money plus extra money and upgrade that rotation spot. But I am not sure the Cubs will spend for the high e d pitchers, unfortunately.
  18. The Phillies and the Rangers are good examples of how spending money does provide you with a better chance to compete. I am sure TR is going to use the Mets and the Padres as an example of money not buying a winning team. Just good to have a few examples of it working. I am sure Phillies fans are sitting around worrying about what happens in 2029 when Harper and Turner are old and not worth the money. They are enjoying a second year in a row of LCS play with a great chance of a second year of WS play. I would take that (again) as a Cubs fan.

So quick question. Anyone have any issues with the Phillies batting Bohm 4th and Castellanos 7th. I ask because back on PSD a lot of people felt Bohm was garbage. How much heat would Ross take if he did that?
  20. Besides that Seaver and Gibson averaged about 7k’s per 9 innings. McDowell and Koufax needs their career at a yioung age due to injuries. Ryan was just a freak of nature. Guys just throw harder now on average.
  21. Pitchers pitched longer because relief pitchers sucked. Pen guys were just guys not good enough to start. So starters stayed in. The averages were higher because guys didn’t have to face specialist. They didn’t have to face a guy throwing 95+ coming out of the pen. They didn’t have to face a guy groomed specifically to pitch one inning out of the pen. Back then that is how teams were built. 4 good starters and 8 good position players. It just isn’t that way any longer.
  22. I think when they go to 4 team divisions and 4 divisions in each league the format should be the top 2 division winners get byes. The other two play the two wild card teams. But they play one day. The division winner only has to win 2 game. The wild card team would have to win a doubleheader that one day. If the division winner wins the first game it is over.
  23. This was a familiar one. Same thing about giving guys a rest. Thawv always felt that was overblown too. I am from the same era as he is. So I understand his thinking. But I have come to realize the baseball I watched as a kid is not the same as today. He is still of the believe that baseball in the 70’s was a better brand. And, maybe it was. But it isn’t going to be like that any longer.
  24. This is NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. Honestly man. You have been preaching this for years. It is not happening. Guys throw too hard now. Too much max effort. They are not trained for this. The fastest way for a coach staff and manager to get fired is to try this. This isn’t the agents pushing this. It is reality. Guys are not going to be able to do this.
  25. Thawv, come on. I know you are from the era where guys like Jenkins got 41 starts a year and three over 300 innnings. 30 complete games. I am too. But what you are suggesting just won’t happen now. No chance. Pitchers won’t be ok doing this. And it isn’t going to happen. We are from an era long gone.
