Well considering the greatest hitters of all time fail more often then not, it is a safe bet Conforto and Carlson will do so as well. I just don’t see Alcantara and/or Long up to sit on the bench. And truth be told, they will probably fail just as often. Maybe Austin replaces one of Conforto or Carlson. 🤷 But unless there is an injury I doubt Alcantara or Long come up and sit the bench. I think you overstate the kids too much. And also expect too much from bench players. Having a bench with guys that actually succeeded in the majors in the not that distant past, is actually having a decent bench. No team, not even the Dodgers, has bench guys who are stars.

I agree. And Conforto.s career OPS+ 115. He had a bad year last year but also hit into some real bad luck. Besides that, really, what are people expecting out of out last few bats anyway.

Right. It is all about what is better for Alcantara going forward. On the major league bench getting 10-15 AB a month or playing everyday in Iowa? They have to at least put him in a position to succeed in ‘27. If an outfielder gets hurt I would expect Alcantara to come up and play often, if he is doing well in Iowa. But to be here for 15 AB a month doesn’t make sense.

2 of those 3 will be there. Probably Conforto and Carlson. Who, exactly, are you expecting to take their spots? One is gone because of Seiya. That would be Kingery. But unless someone is injured I don’t see them bringing up Alcantara or Long to get the 15AB those guys would be getting. Again, what do you really expect from the 12th and 13th bat on the team? If not them and if the idea is to get Long and Alcantara everyday playing time, who takes the spot?

Yes, typically when a guy signs a contract in the off season it starts that year. So as compared to Merrill, as an example, if Merrill got 9 years, PCA got 7. Would have been nice to have one more or at least a team option. But this is pretty good. And also a good sign the FO seems to be more in line with other FO in baseball.

Well not starting this year helps. As I said, I would have liked at least one team option.

I would have liked the Cubs having an option year or two added at the end, but I guess 2 additional years of PCA is good.

I’m at 91+ as well. Not much more, but I do think they are a very good team.

I hope it goes thru the 32 season and then the Cubs have a few option years. I would hope they buy out a few FA years with the deal.

Small market teams as well as teams like the Cubs and Red Sox are absolutely going to be the driving force in a lockout, if there is one. Especially if the agreement is putting in a floor on salaries. You just said small market teams are well below the “leaked” floor. So why would they be ok raising their payroll?

I doubt that factored in at all. Cubs finally but a fair deal on the table and he took it.

Maybe, but I also think they are better this year than last. Added another solid starting pitcher, Steele should be back and I think Bregman and Mo will be as good as Shaw and Tucker. Plus they improved the bench. So assuming some regression I still see them as a 90 win team. And if some guys actually get better (Busch, PCA, Brown, Shaw and Amaya to name a few) they could win 93-94 games.

I’m much closer to your way of thinking that any of those projections. IMO we saw him get better as the year went on. His K rate was going up. I expect him to be league average in K’s, if not better. Not sure I would have him as dominate next year, but I do expect very good. Not Skenes or Skubal level. Maybe more like vintage Steele.

I think Carlson is an easy choice to make the team. Even with a healthy Suzuki I felt the bench would be- back up catcher. Shaw, Carlson and Conforto. Mo starts at DH.

This isn’t really fair. There is no way an American player can win over some people in this country. If they are all rah rah people look at them as entitled asshats drinking the America kool aid. If they act like it isn’t that big a deal then other rip them for being unpatriotic or losing because they just don’t have the same drive the other countries have, to win. I wanted USA to win. But I am happy for the Venezuela team, as well. It was a fun tournament and USA just couldn’t close the deal. I have no issue with them being disappointed they lost. Venezuela deserved the championship. They beat both, US and Japan. Good for them.

Honestly, there is no reason to answer that question. As you said, there may not be a need for Palencia. So why answer a wherein on his availability if it turns out there was never a spot to use him.

Of course he wants to pitch. And I like him for that. But as Cubs management is concerned, I am not sure I would want him to. Hopefully USA is winning by a lot so no Palencia.

I am going to the game Friday. They had to change it to a night game because Friday it is supposed to be 106.

7 K’s in 3 innings. He looks very good. Guardian announcers are raving about him.

Thanks guys. I didn’t say I was being rational. I said I am starting to worry. I have had an MRI before and found out results pretty quickly. I would tbink for a professional ballplayers they would be able to have them looked at pretty quickly. Why does it take a day to get results? This is why I am concerned. Maybe irrational. But you also have to realize the Cubs do tend to slow roll bad news. Which, again, concerns me.

I am now “officially” beginning to worry about Seiya. Shouldn’t take that long to get MRI results. You would think they would want to get it done early today. So they should have the results and yet we haven’t heard a thing. Cubs seem to wait as long as possible whenever they have bad news.

My bad. I just read he will be in Az today and just thought that was because he was flying from further away. But as you agreed with, the Cubs won’t say anything until they actually see him and run their own tests.

I understand people’s concerns since the Cubs do trend to slow roll bad news, however, in this case, Seiya didn’t have imaging in Japan and then had to fly to Az. So not hearing anything yet, makes sense. Personally, I think he will just be day to day. Didn’t look like much but Cubs aren’t going to say that until they see him.

Doesn’t look good. That is for sure. But he also might be a guy who takes a while to ramp up. He might be someone who needs spring to get his velo up. Obviously there is food reason to be concerned. But I do think he still could be a useful 4 or 5 in the rotation.
