I think that would do it. I also think he doesn’t get close to that amount. I could see 3/$70M. Something like that. If the Cubs have confident a 4th year and closer to $30M per year for him to not considered free agency, IMO, they will let him shop and maybe see if they can best the offers he has. They aren’t going 4/$120 bidding against themselves.

I know you said player on player. But I assume you are ok with coaches on the field noticing things and relaying information. As long as it is all on the field all is fair game.

I find it funny that so many people are acting like signing Holmes is strictly something the Cubs can decide to do and it will happen. This isn’t meant for you, I have seen others suggesting they have to do it. But it is a decision he has to make too. He is a FA at the end of the year. Why wouldn’t he wait to see what the market will bring him? Yes, I would like him back. But if I were him, even if I really wanted to play in Chicago, I wouks go to free agency. Cubs have no leverage.

I guess if you are still clinging to some crazy hope they can catch the brewers I understand the thought process. But I have given that idea up. Too far back with too few games to play. Had they won the last 3 series, I could understand it. But even then I wouldn’t pull a pitcher after giving up 2 runs in the first inning. There is a long way to go. Besides that, who are you bringing in that you think would do much better? You are bringing in your 10th pitcher on the staff. Maybe even the 12th or 13th. You certainly aren’t using whoever they determine to be key guys.

9 of his last 10 starts he want 6+ innings. 6 of those were quality starts. I know he is getting some luck baked into those numbers, but “slightly worse than Shota”? That is an overreach. He isn’t great, but he has been fine, at least results wise.

No you don’t. There is still 24 games to go. You don’t yank Boyd for giving up a homer in the first inning. They still need innings from their starters. If it was a 3 game lead the Cubs were trying to gain on, maybe there is a little more urgency. But even they you don’t pull Boyd after one inning. Cubs just need to get in the playoffs and have a rotation set up for it. Preferably they have 3 or 4 pen arms they trust at that time. I don’t want pen arms overused for games in September when they are comfortably in a playoff spot. I would like home field in the WC round, but really the Cubs and Phillies are pretty similar, home or road. It is more important to me to have a rotation and pen set and healthy for the playoffs then it is to use guys up chasing a team they aren’t going to catch. Now, that thinking could change with a series sweep and then maybe gain another game over the weekend. But even then yiu can’t overuse the pen.

Wonder if this is going to be the new excuse when a pitcher pitches poorly, or if the Cubs are really good at it. Not illegal, so keep doing it.

There is a spot for a position player and a pitcher. Haven’t heard who that pitcher is yet. But Boyd has pitched 6 innings in most games this year. They may bring Assad up, but I doubt it is because they are concerned Boyd doesn’t have it and will not pitch enough innings.

The difference is I believe Thomas was a Ben Johnson request. The others were all Poles, or at least not Johnson’s choice. Hypolite may have been a DA request. The others were with a completely different coaching staff. I trust Ben, so I am fine with Thomas.

I don’t even know what this is supposed to mean. Who cares! If you are telling me Holmes, Gausman and Boyd can’t hold the Phillies to 1 or 2 runs in 6 or 7 innings I would tell you that isn’t true. Sure Wheeler, Sanchez and Luzardo are all very good. But how did they do against the Cubs? Cubs have a better line up. If Swanson is back and they have all their regulars in place their pitchers can pitch a good game. I know people are worried about Boyd specifically. But the Phillies are bad against lefties. They can be beat. Why focus on the only thing the Phillies have over the Cubs instead of focusing on the Cubs having a far superior defense and offense.

If we are hoping for someone who has to miss a few days for bereavement or a new child, can’t we hope it is Arias instead of Busch😅

I agree. I think he makes a lot of sense. Had a good year. He can switch hit. He plays 1st and 3rd. At the last bat on the bench he makes sense. They also had to make a decision on him anyway, in the off season. So putting him on the 40 man now isn’t a big deal. But is he active today? If so, who is dropped. Kind of an odd time for this.

I can see Busch moved down. But not 9th. In fact, he might not even play today if Murray is up. Not sure who he is up for unless they release Arias. I get the idea of Shaw at SS. Means only one spot is weakened defensively. But he might be a big step down from Dansby at SS. 🤷 which is better? One big drop in defense or two smaller drops?

Not sure why I was quoted in your posts. Unless you are adding to what I said. Because I agree with you. I would say the Dodgers and the Brewers are better than the Cubs. But even in a series against them, IMO, cubs have probably a 45% -47% chance of winning. Against the rest of the league it is probably 50/50 or better. They can win. And if they do it will be because CC found a few guys who produced when called on.

I get that, and agree. But they have a month to figure out who those guys can be. And all of them, at one time or another this year, have pitched well. It isn’t unfathomable he can find some arms that get the job done. That said, whoever he does land on, I will still not be confident in him. That is just being a fan. Even a team with a great pen, their fans are nervous and worried when protecting a one run lead.

I don’t get the hatred towards him. He is exactly the type of player most people today love. Some older baseball fans have issues with guys being flashy. I used to be that way, but I realize my demographic isn’t what baseball is playing to any longer, so I have come to accept it. But I do understand when an older guy thinks showboating is too much. But the game today is geared to younger viewers. Those viewers generally like that in a player. They like the player who can do everything. I am thinking of the guys in their 30’s and 40’s I feel that is what they like. Same with younger kids. So, in my mind, PCA should be loved by the modern baseball fan. He is flashy, and does everything well. I think he is misunderstood by a lot of fans who view him as cocky. On a personal level I have met him twice and each time he has been very respectful. In fact, one time when I met him, the next day I saw him again at breakfast and he walked past my table and spoke to me. I found him to be a very nice person.

Nice editing. Way to leave out the next sentence where I said doesn’t have to be all those arms, they just need 3 pen arms pitching well. That doesn’t mean the 4 you mentioned are the 3 arms. It could be Zepherjohn, Webb, Palencia, Rolison, Theilbar, Civale or any of those 4 guys. Point is, there may be several other options come the playoffs. There isn’t a 13th pitcher on a playoff roster. The staff is shortened. Between now and the end if the season CC needs to find his circle of trust in the pen. Sure, if they can’t find 3 or 4 pen arms out of that collection of guys they aren’t winning.

If true that would be worth a lot. I have seen him taking ground balls and optimistic reports as well. But it is the Cubs. It is always optimistic until last minute and things turn.

I’m not sure that’s true. Yes, they aren’t playing well. But even a 10-15 finish means BOTH the Padres and Dbacks could only lose 9 games the rest of the season. Dbacks have 24 games left and Padres 25. And they play each other 3. That can happen, but pretty unlikely. So they should make the playoffs. If they have a set rotation with Holmes pitching game one and then either Boyd or Gausman next AND guys like Miller, Cabrera, Steele and even Wiggins are in the pen instead of some of the guys there now, they can advance. Doesn’t even have to be all those arms, they just need 3 pen arms pitching well. As far as home field goes, Cubs road record is just as good as their home record. If they play the Phillies, they are the same home or away. While this team is very frustrating, they truly have enough talent to beat anyone. They can do it at home or on the road. They just need their pitchers to be their best selves. There is enough talent in the staff where if they are pitching well they can win. This isn’t like last year where we had to piece things together. Cubs just need good pitchers to be good in the playoffs. Doesn’t matter if they get in 4,5 or 6. Doesn’t matter if they win 87 or 92. Just get in and see what happens.

They absolutely miss Swanson. If anything, Swanson’s injury has shown people exactly how valuable he is. Even hitting low .200’s, he has to be in the line up. He needs to be in the short side of that 4-6 week IL stint. Unfortunately the way this season is going 4-6 weeks will end up not coming back at all.

I was thinking this as well. I can’t see Shota starting again. IMO it has to be someone else. Assad, Civale or Cabrera need to fill that last spot. Shota definitely should not face the Brewers in Milwaukee next week. Even if they start him in Miami and he pitches well(which I hope they don’t start him) he can’t face the Brewers after that. Cabrera is the upside play. He has the highest ceiling. But I feel more comfortable with Assad or Civale giving the Cubs 5 good innings.

Looks like it clears out 7:30-8:00 and then very little chance of rain. So maybe a later start? But they will play.

Has he gone 2 days in a row? If so, we might see him in the Cubs pen in the playoffs. It is possible to see a very different pen in the playoffs. Miller, Wiggins, Cabrera, Steele? Who knows🤷
