  1. Who does he replace? Busch or Bregman? I am fine with him 5th against a right handed pitcher.
  2. I think that is exactly what he is saying. He added a few more reasons as well. And did say he wasn’t sure what the reason was. That said, maybe I can add another one. Baseball isn’t supposed to be played for real in March. Season started too early for some, maybe. Personally I don’t find this start of the season any different than any other in terms of my enthusiasm in watching baseball. But I do understand why some might. One of the other reasons cubsinny mentioned was our society currently. And that can be something that distracts some from enjoying baseball. Yes, we watch to get away from the day to day BS. To put our mind on something else. But it is getting harder and harder to do every day.
  3. If he goes 4 without giving up a run I will take it. Soriano isn’t going past 5. I will take my chances on bullpen versus bullpen.
  4. I wanted Soriano this off season. Maybe Soriano for Shaw🤷😬?
  5. The Bregman one was a strike according the JD and Boog. It caught the bottom of the zone. It was close. Also, I know I said they should have challenged the ball call to the first batter. But really I didn’t expect they would. It is the first batter. Don’t want to be wrong so early.
  6. I’ve seen 92 on the gun. That is a little better. Should have challenged the 2-2 pitch. Instead he ended walking the lead off hitter.
  7. I think the Chicago weather and the wind blowing in tonight at 13-17mph will help Tailon look much better than he did during spring training.
  8. To be fair, Imanaga actually pitched pretty well. Some soft contact then a homer on a good pitch. Weimer seems to have his number, but otherwise he did well.
  9. 2 bunt hits this year. Maybe he can add that to his game. He wasn’t very good at it last year.
  10. This is the main point. Good to now be arguing if the Cubs paid someone too much. Nice to see them acting large market. I will agree that I found it hard to believe Nico would have gotten $30M a year. But I absolutely think he would have gotten $25M annual. So 6/$150. And it wouldn’t shock me if it was even a little higher. Only takes one team to value him that high. Especially if a team saw him as a SS. He didn’t take a huge discount. He did leave money on the table if he plays as well this year as last, IMO. But he got security and being able to play where he must want to play.
  11. I think you keep trying to compare his deal with PCA’s. And that is the problem with you not liking Nico’s deal. But what you are not factoring in is that with PCA the Cubs are buying out cheaper years of his contract. With Nico every year is a FA year. That is the reason Nico is making a higher annual salary. Cubs don’t have to pay PCA $20M next year. He can go to arbitration and maybe get $5M. Maybe the next year $8M. Hoerner’s deal starts at FA pricing. PCA’s starts at arbitration pricing. Huge difference. And Nico is absolutely worth the contract he got.
  12. No reason it couldn’t be. It only takes one team to give him that. Bregman got $35M. I don’t know why Nico couldn’t get $30M. Again, maybe he wants to stay in Chicago. Is Jose Ramirez’s agent bad because Jose signed for a lot less than what he could have made elsewhere? When we are talking generational money, maybe security and familiarity are also important to some players. Doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.
  13. His agent works for him. Maybe he wants to stay in Chicago. Maybe he wants the security of knowing he has 6 more years in Chicago. He could get hurt and not get more next season. Personally, I don’t think he would have gotten $30M a year. But maybe he would have🤷. At the very least, IMO, he would have done better than what the Cubs gave him. Doesn’t mean the agent is bad. Means Nico wanted to stay here.
  14. I guessed 6/$130. Not far off. I think it is a good deal for the Cubs. If Nico improves even slightly with power(maybe 10-12 homers) and does everything else the same as last year, I think he could have gotten over $150M for 6. Maybe as much as $170M. Cubs gave him a fair offer and he wants to stay in Chicago, it seems, so this works.
  15. It is going to be. What you are failing to understand is PCA has 4 years of arbitration before he makes real money. Next year PCA would probably make $5M in arbitration. The next year maybe $8M or $9M. Then maybe $15M. Nico is past those arbitration years. He will get more because he doesn’t have to worry about early years and lower salaries.
  16. I don’t agree that a contending team trades a veteran player to make room for a 22 yr old SS. If they are no longer contending, I agree with you. But I expect they will be in contention.
  17. Guess we will see. IMO the Cubs wouldn’t give him that amount. I agree he is probably worth it. But I think if they had to pay him that they would let him go.
  18. He will get more than PCA. PCA got several years of lower paid bought out. Completely different situation.
  19. How can they easily trade Swanson and his $27M contract? Do you mean give him away as a salary dump? Maybe they can trade him for another high priced player at a different position. But I wouldn’t consider it easy to trade Swanson. I do agree with you on Nico not getting more than $25M a year, let alone the $30M+ Bertz is suggesting. I don’t see that. If it is that, I agree with Bertz. I wouldn’t have done it.
  20. I pretty much agree with you. But I think that had Nico went to free agency someone would have given him $150M. Which is why I feel $130M is a good deal for the Cubs and security for him. If it is $120M all the better.
  21. Completely agree. The distain for the bench is just stupid. They are not starters. Period. So obviously they are not great. If they were good they would be starting. It is something every fan of every team in every year can complain about.
  22. What is the guess on Nico. I am guessing $130M for 6 years. Anything less and Nico is giving them a discount, IMO.
  23. Nice word play. 👍 Almost as good a Matt Shaw rethinking “Jews will not replace us” when Bregman signed.
  24. Yep, Kingery is only here because of an injury. And I am not even saying Carlson and Conforto are very good. I am just saying no matter who the last 2 bench guys are, any fan of any team can say what you are saying. All of them are iffy and on short leashes. I like bith Cub bench bats better than Brujan and Berti. You very well could be right, one of them won’t be here. But I don’t think it will be Alcantara taking either’s place and even if he did, I have no faith he would be an upgrade. I would bet you can, and probably have, said the same thing every year the Cubs start. One of the bench bats won’t be here in June. You aren’t exactly stepping out with a bold prediction. The question is, who would make you not say that?
  25. Kingery is not even worth mentioning. I completely agree he will be gone. Rather than bet 2 of 3 will be gone, I would bet, without a major injury neither Alcantara not Long will be up. Both Conforto and Carlson are very good bench options. But that doesn’t mean one won’t suck and will be replaced. As you said, maybe Austin. Who, btw, is no sure thing and very well could suck. The point is, the 12th and 13th bat on the team is a crap shoot for every team. You pick two bench guys on another team. I would bet you one of those won’t be there come Mid June too. As I said, IMO, Kingery doesn’t count. He is here because Seiya is hurt. So I am only talking about Carlson and Conforto.
