That works for me as well, as long as the plan is for him to be a 3rd catcher on the playoff roster. If not, I would leave him in Iowa and not have to mess with already ever changing 40 man roster. With the possibility of Milner, Brown, Steele and Miller all needing a roster spot I don’t see them adding him just for the regular season.

Honestly the 14 man staff once they can bring a guy up isn’t easy to navigate. If Cabrera is ready I assume he would be the 14th guy. But you have Milner, Assad, Miller, and then, mid September, possibly Brown and Steele. Of the first 3 mentioned I think Miller is the most exciting, if he is healthy. So if you add him I would think either Rea or Civale is dropped. I would want that to be Rea on the chance the Cubs have unlocked something with Civale. If they like Milner more than Theilbar that is an easier 1 for 1. I don’t see both in the team. Sadly, to a lot of Assad fans, I don’t see him on the team either. So now when Brown comes back is it Thornton is is it whoever they kept between Theilbar or Milner? If Steele come back I would guess whoever was was left from the trio of Thornton, Milner and Theilbar. With Miller and Webb being reverse split guys they won’t need Theilbar or Milner. They would have Steele and Rolison in they own. All of this moving around and I don’t see where Assad fits in. (Unless they release Civale) Note: Thornton has kind of turned it around a little lately. Throwing harder than even and getting some K’s. I’m not is a huge hurry to see him go. I just don’t know what they do if they do get Cabrera, Miller, Milner, Brown and Steele all back. I guess it is a nice problem to have🤷

You also posted the Dbacks have 3 starting pitchers better than any starter the Cubs have. Who are those 3 guys?

Civale really bailed them out yesterday. I know there was talk about him pitching differently as a Cub and him actually being very good. It may have been Bertz who showed some encouraging numbers about Civale. Can anyone who digs into those numbers tell me if he is actually performing well with his underlying numbers justifying what we are seeing or is he Fedde of last year and will soon fail? If he is this guy they have to keep him around. Wouldn’t mind him taking Rea’s spot next year. Unfortunaly for the Assad fans, if Civale has underlying numbers to back what we are seeing we might not see Assad on the major league team again this year. At the very least, Cabrera will be back. Maybe he is the 14th pitcher when the rosters expand. But we might get Brown too. And now a guy like Thornton isn’t a sure cut either. He is doing well. IMO Rea would now be the first to go, assuming Civale is for real.

The pop-up that wasn’t t caught went for a hit. There were no unearned runs. No idea how that ball dropped, but really it was a hard ball for the 3rd baseman to catch. SS didn’t even go after it and I have no idea where Arozarena was, but he wasnt close to the ball.

I’m starting to like Civale. So how do they keep him on the roster if Milner comes back? Cut Theilbar or send Rolison to Iowa? Maybe Milner doesn’t come back. But there is also Cabrera.

It has been amazing how few DP they turn with Dansby. This time away should really show people how valuable he actually is.

I don’t think the Dbacks have any pitcher any more likely to pitch a good game the pitchers the Cubs have. As for the Phillies, I agree their top 3 are rough. But their offense is nothing special, their defense is poor and even with those pitches they have given up as many runs as the Cubs. I also don’t feel King is any more likely to pitch well in a game than a Cubs starter. Braves have Sale and the Brewers have Mis. But worse rotations than the Cubs have won WS. A solid starter just has to have a good game. I think Gausman, Holmes and even Boyd are solid pitchers. I think if Brown comes back he can be very good. I just don’t see it as a foregone conclusion they can’t win. It is easy to take you view now when they are playing poorly. It is also easy to see team flaws when you watch them everyday. I am sure if you(by you, I mean all of us) watched other teams as much you would find flaws with them. Don’t misunderstand me. I am not suggesting the Cubs are going to win the WS. I am saying they are a good team who can win. Most likely, they won’t.

Why? They are 18 over .500 with a run differential of 98. Why can’t they win? How many more negatives do they have than any other good team. I have heard about the Phillies as if they are better than the Cubs. They have given up the same amount of runs and scored far fewer. So they obviously have negatives too. If a team 18 over with the run differential the Cubs have still gives you low expectations, what does it take to have high expectations? They are an elite defense and top offensive team. They added pitching at the TDL and have guys coming back from injuries. Why shouldn’t they be very good? Now, I agree, even very good doesn’t mean they win the WS. They probably have a 5% to 10% of that happening. Of course teams like the Dodgers, Braves, Rays and Brewers will have better odds at winning. But that is because 3 of them won’t have to play in the WC round. And most likely the Cubs won’t win the WS. Again, only 1 team can win. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t put a good team on the rules and that they don’t have a chance. I feel you negative stance is just a perfect setup for coming on later, when the Cubs do get eliminated, to say I told you they weren’t good enough. But any fan of any team can do that and be right 29/30 times. Even if/when they lose, it doesn’t mean they weren’t built to win the WS. They are, but so are other teams. Someone has to lose. Last year they had no pitching going into the playoffs, yet somehow beat the Padres and then took the Brewers to game 5. This time instead of staring Pomeranz maybe the start Holmes. Instead of following Pomeranz with Rea, maybe Brown comes in. Instead of having weakass Tucker up in a key spot, when he ducked the entire second half, they have Bregman up. I’m. It arguing that they will win. That would be foolish. I am arguing that they can win. And suggesting otherwise is just a default response to be able to then say “oh well, I said that would happen anyway”.

I agree. Fact is there are probably only 4 or 5 elite starters. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be beat. Cubs are a very good team and have enough pitching (with their defense) to win any series. Doesn’t mean they will, but they could.
