  1. The Cubs have not had a lot of white guys with that type of build who hit righty. Matt Szczur is a good guess. If not him I'd expect another guy from the Dale Sveum era like Joe Mather or Chris Denorfia.
  2. I know he gave up a run but I thought Miller looked a lot better. I wonder if he's a guy whose stuff flattens out in the dry Arizona air?
  3. Seiya's lineouts tonight had xBA's of .850 and .970
  4. Also Julian Merryweather looks fully back
  5. Wow the noise difference between when the Cubs and Tigers are at bat is insane
  6. I'm actually really excited for this
  7. Oh certainly. He's not good, but the idea that he's so bad a "serious" team would flatly refuse to employ him is pretty divorced from reality. He's a pretty generic innings eating 5th starter.
  8. Read two things this morning that make it sound like Ben Brown is going to be the 5th starter - Colin Rea didn't leave with the rest of the team for Japan. He's arriving today, he stayed behind the extra few days to line up his throwing schedule. Brett at BN notes this lines him up to piggyback with Shota on Tuesday. Not impossible to get him back onto schedule from there, but feels noteworthy that his availability for length in the bullpen is being prioritized over being ready for a scheduled start against Arizona or the A's. - Much more direct, Jeff Passan this AM said the Cubs are "seriously considering" giving Brown the 5th starter role I feel MUCH better about this team with Brown in the 5 spot. That said it makes the roster management more complicated.
  9. He had a 3.84 ERA last year and the year before that started a playoff game for the Dodgers.
  10. Rea's not way different in that regard. Lynn had a 36% groundball rate last year, Rea had a 39%. Also Wrigley's been trending more and more pitcher friendly. Last year was anomalously bad, but Fangraphs says that Wrigley hasn't been an above average homerun park since 2015. The video boards probably have a heavy hand in this, and they're not going anywhere.
  11. On the one hand, Lynn is probably better than Rea. On the other hand, whose roster spot is he taking? There is already a crunch to get Keller on the roster. Is someone hurt? On yet another hand, the Athletic did specifically mention that such a signing would likely not be with opening day in mind.
  12. I'm cautiously optimistic about Merryweather this year. Non-arm surgery gives me some hope the issues last year were dealt with personally. Plus with the bullpen seemingly being deeper, he can hopefully pitch more often with rest and that should pay dividends.
  13. Things that are apparently fascism: - Wanting to be paid for the hours you spend researching and writing about sports - Spending more time with your kids
  14. Mooney in the Athletic this AM says Friday's a bullpen game and Taillon is starting Sunday. I'd guess Keller (who would require another 40 man move for the Dodgers series) and Wicks follow Taillon on Sunday. Then the pitching staff for the Dodgers series is the normal on paper one except with one of Palencia/Brown subbed in for Taillon.
  15. This did a really good job clearing things up IMO. Keegan Thompson not being part of the travel party probably makes him the 40 man move for Shaw I'd guess.
  16. If all these guys also threw in games today I think it backs up Pearson/Miller being part of the 8 man bullpen theory Also great news that Owen Caissie seems on track for opening day, if not sooner.
  17. I'm probably reading too much into it, but I wonder if Miller and Pearson pitching today is a sign they're indeed going to make the 26 man roster. This is the last game before everyone jumps on the plane to Japan. From a standpoint of being ready for next Tuesday, you'd probably want your A team relievers to pitch today, then one of the exhibition games.
  18. There are some breadcrumbs you can pick up around developing and convalescing players but for an All Star level talent like Steele it's purely about health.
  19. Misiorowski is Milwaukee's closest equivalent to Horton or Brown. 1 ST game obviously meaningless but good to see him not really doing much against this lineup
  20. The 40 man move is interesting. We know both Brujan and Workman are making the Japan trip. All of the roster bubble pitchers are as well. It's either Hollowell, Kilian, or someone is going to get DFA'd while in Japan.
  21. Because he's been tracking towards the opening day start in Japan, decent chance it's normal dead arm that guys typically get towards the end of March. Usually happens around the point guys build up to 4 or 5 innings.
  22. 🚨 🚨 Jordan Wicks sitting 93-94, topped out at 95.6
  23. Of course it's happening when we can't watch but Shaw with two line drive singles today through two at bats
  24. I'm pretty okay hunting for upside knowing that there's probably also going to be a top 45 pick used on the position.
  25. Pretty decent money too
