    Those are nice prospects but as expected that is a farrrrrrrrrr cry from "Top 100 guy and more" Value wise (but very much NOT style-wise) that feels something like Cepeda and Southisene.

    Add Mize to the "guys getting scratched" list Not gonna lie it feels like the damn is going to break. I know baseball execs love nothing in the world more than to procrastinate so I have my expectations on Sunday night for the fun starting in earnest but the tenor of rumors makes it seem like we're closer than that.

    Honestly I'd be aiming to go into next season with a 6 man rotation AND a quality long guy like Assad in the pen. Between Steele and Brown having ruby red injury flags and the inevitable disruptions to ST you need to simply assume you're losing a SP to something nasty before we hit Tax Day.

    Yeah I think I'd top out at giving Assad the Rea role next year. Assad seems materially better than he was a year ago while Rea seems materially worse. And crucially Assad will still have a minor league option so if to squally's point he backslides again or, god willing, we have 13 better guys healthy at the same time he's easily pushed off to Iowa.

    Kelly's been really good at Iowa. I suspect he's a LOOGY more than anything but this should be a guy who can contribute. Thielbar to the IL? Or extra body because a trade is close?

    Assad with his fastball north of 93 (it was over 94 yesterday) is a totally different animal compared to Assad with his fastball in the 91-92 range. 2024/2025 Assad was a bad pitcher getting by with a combo of Wrigley winds, the Cubs defense, frequently getting bailed out by the bullpen in the 5th inning, and a healthy amount of luck. The Assad we're seeing right now is probably much closer to a mid-rotation starter. This is what he looked like in 2023 IMO.

    I wonder what it'd cost to nab both Soriano and Detmers? Like it'd hurt, obviously, but you'd presumably have the rotation addressed for the next 2.5 years outside of Rea-type depth options. If we're wanting to just cash in all our chips in the upper minors/MLB on one big move this feels like where I'd be willing to stretch to do something irresponsible?

    Josiah Hartshorn had a 77 wRC+ during the month+ Ty Southisene was hurt. He was red hot when Ty got hurt (3/5 with a dong his last game) and is red hot again now that he's back. Coincidence? Or is Southisene driving Hartshorn to be better?

    A smart team would insist for him as the 2nd or 3rd piece in a trade over the next few days

    Not as a starter but as a heavy Cutter/Curveball guy out of the bullpen I suspect he will as a reliever. I actually think there's a decent chance he ends up being a savvy pickup. He was really good for us last September and now two of his first three outings here in '26.

    Dallas is the #4 media market in the country and Phoenix is #12. And even if these markets just underperform, the bottom line is it's not a bad thing to get the second largest media market in the country (and in this case, an entire extra country as well) juiced up for baseball even if there's some marginal falloff in like Tampa or Milwaukee.

    Yeah obviously this deadline is about pitching pitching pitching but this is just such a small and easy hole to patch up I'd be disappointed if they didn't. And if they don't I suspect the why would be more about Ian Happ's feelings than anything objective, which would not be great. Happ's almost certainly not this bad against LHP. I think there's some BABIP happening here and also some small sample size (anecdotally Happ has always seemed particularly streaky right handed). But even at his best Happ has only ever been solid against LHP. Like you probably don't give Happ the Moises Ballesteros treatment and pull him from the game in the 6th inning at the first lefty reliever, but also he shouldn't be starting against them and definitely shouldn't be taking any super high leverage at bats against them. I think it's worth noting too that you probably don't need this guy to be an outfielder unless Shaw gets dealt. Shaw in LF and new guy at DH is a perfectly viable alignment against LH starters. I think it works out that most of the lefty mashers available are OFers, but if you wanted to nab a DH or someone who very much should be a DH (Jo Adell?) it's easily workable.

    Ethan Flanagan's got a 28.3% K-rate, 5.8% BB rate, and an above average GB rate. The stuff doesn't jump off the page at you and he's been strictly limited to twice through the order, but he's interesting. Especially if over the offseason he can pull a Will Sanders and get his average fastball closer to 94 than 92.
