  1. He had a game in ST with it tied up in a top knot. I believe that's what's going on here too
  2. BTW something to keep an eye on these next two games
  3. Yeah Yamamoto is similarly up. He's having more trouble locating with the extra juice though
  4. It's not hard to see this offense being bad. PCA and Amaya were trash in the first half last year, Matt Shaw's a rookie, and both of our middle infielders had surgery this winter. Kyle Tucker continuing to hit .033 is not a rational worry though.
  5. Dansby Swanson has a big offensive year, but WAR-wise it's a bit of a wash as big cracks start showing on defense Matt Boyd ends up being a Steele/Shota caliber starter One of the kids opening the year at Iowa ends up being a star caliber contributor in the 2nd half a la PCA last year The team is multiple games under .500 on May 1st and vibes are rancid, but they go 5+ games over by June 1st and it's smooth-ish sailing from there
  6. This would be huge
  7. Are we thinking that the usual pre-season topics (bold predictions, win totals, etc) make more sense to do ahead of Tuesday or to do ahead of the Arizona series?
  8. Do we think Lumpuy starts at Myrtle? And that Wiggons inning, wowza
  9. Caden Dana is one of the tippy top pitching prospects in baseball and the Cubs' minor leaguers didn't let him get out of the 1st inning.
  10. That's 3 Brewers SPs injured this spring. And Brandon Woodruff is apparently topping out at 94. It's the Brewers so they'll somehow find a way but jeesh.
  11. The Cubs have not had a lot of white guys with that type of build who hit righty. Matt Szczur is a good guess. If not him I'd expect another guy from the Dale Sveum era like Joe Mather or Chris Denorfia.
  12. I know he gave up a run but I thought Miller looked a lot better. I wonder if he's a guy whose stuff flattens out in the dry Arizona air?
  13. Seiya's lineouts tonight had xBA's of .850 and .970
  14. Also Julian Merryweather looks fully back
  15. Wow the noise difference between when the Cubs and Tigers are at bat is insane
  16. I'm actually really excited for this
  17. Oh certainly. He's not good, but the idea that he's so bad a "serious" team would flatly refuse to employ him is pretty divorced from reality. He's a pretty generic innings eating 5th starter.
  18. Read two things this morning that make it sound like Ben Brown is going to be the 5th starter - Colin Rea didn't leave with the rest of the team for Japan. He's arriving today, he stayed behind the extra few days to line up his throwing schedule. Brett at BN notes this lines him up to piggyback with Shota on Tuesday. Not impossible to get him back onto schedule from there, but feels noteworthy that his availability for length in the bullpen is being prioritized over being ready for a scheduled start against Arizona or the A's. - Much more direct, Jeff Passan this AM said the Cubs are "seriously considering" giving Brown the 5th starter role I feel MUCH better about this team with Brown in the 5 spot. That said it makes the roster management more complicated.
  19. He had a 3.84 ERA last year and the year before that started a playoff game for the Dodgers.
  20. Rea's not way different in that regard. Lynn had a 36% groundball rate last year, Rea had a 39%. Also Wrigley's been trending more and more pitcher friendly. Last year was anomalously bad, but Fangraphs says that Wrigley hasn't been an above average homerun park since 2015. The video boards probably have a heavy hand in this, and they're not going anywhere.
  21. On the one hand, Lynn is probably better than Rea. On the other hand, whose roster spot is he taking? There is already a crunch to get Keller on the roster. Is someone hurt? On yet another hand, the Athletic did specifically mention that such a signing would likely not be with opening day in mind.
  22. I'm cautiously optimistic about Merryweather this year. Non-arm surgery gives me some hope the issues last year were dealt with personally. Plus with the bullpen seemingly being deeper, he can hopefully pitch more often with rest and that should pay dividends.
