2 things:
- Why are we concerned with Hoerner improving? Taking lateral steps is fine when you're already very good. Doubly so when you're also playing on a team friendly contract.
- The Swanson stuff is, respectfully, very silly. Swanson was a +7 defender last year via DRS, +14 via Statcast, and +5 via BP's numbers. Actuarially there aren't a ton of 32+ year old shortstops, but actuarially if you're still elite at the position at 30 there's not a lot of reason to suspect youll have played yourself off the position before you're 32.
I do actually tend to agree this is Hoerner's last year here. It's hard to ignore the smoke around him getting traded this past offseason. I think also the team needs to proactively move one or two of the guys set to hit FA after '26 over the next 12 months, and Hoerner's combo of talent/salary and lack of a NTC likely makes him among the easiest to trade.
