  1. Extremely early returns but Workman's defense appears to be as advertised
  2. Oh jeez Bobby Miller It's usually a good sign when the ball goes flying, but scary
  3. Yeah velo looks like it was up about an MPH, though we'll see if that sticks as he lengthens out
  4. The ABS is gonna be such a game changer, love it
  5. Brett Bateman already had little power, he might be Nick Madrigal the first few months of the season now.
  6. It won't happen, but I'd play Seiya in CF against some lefties. I've always heard that CF is the easiest position on the diamond if you have the requisite athleticism. Seiya does, and that would get him more in the field time to hopefully keep him as happy as possible.
  7. I feel like over the last 6 months there have been a lot of little breadcrumbs that make you think the team is *really* high on Alcantara. This is the latest IMO.
  8. I think that would require Tucker regularly playing CF. Doesn't seem unreasonable but we haven't heard anything to that effect yet AFAIK.
  9. Canario is getting DFAd for Turner So PCA does not get a platoon partner. Berti's the backup CF until Alcantara comes up full time.
  10. Apparently several additional parks in Arizona added Statcast for this year. So the Cubs will play in front of tracking for 10 of their games, a lot more than the last few years. A few things that will be worth checking on IMO: - After making it a point of emphasis this winter, has Taillon gotten any velo back? - Do the guys who ended the year on the IL look right? - Anyone change their repertoires in a way we can tie back to Tyler Zombro?
  11. I think it's less the CBA and more Jed's job uncertainty. Like the contracts they offered Scott and Bregman both passed into the new CBA. My read is Jed's seat is warm enough that he just doesn't have a ton of latitude to extend money beyond his contract. I think that's also part of why there's some unused money going into this season. Jed doesn't get the benefit of going right up to the CBT line without special permission from Tom, because the line can be a bit of a moving target.
  12. I'd be highly skeptical teams still have significantly better models than the public for measuring defense in the Statcast era. Especially in the outfield.
  13. Two years ago I remember Sahadev Sharma going out on a limb that he thought Devers would be Hoyer's first mega contract. This FO apparently loves him. There is a 0.0% chance of something happening right now. But a year from now if Jed strikes out on Tucker and Devers/Boston look like they need a divorce? Still doesn't feel super likely but it'd be welllll north of 0.
  14. Last year non-catchers on the Cubs' bench got just under 900 PAs. - PCA probably takes a bite out of that and goes from 410 PAs to 500+ - On the flip side Shaw will likely get shielded a bit, especially early, so he probably doesn't hit the 630 PAs from Morel + Paredes So even assuming a pretty normal level of time on the DL like the position player group had last year, that's enough for ~300 PAs to Turner, ~200 to Berti, ~300 to the kids, and another ~100 to various randos like Brujan. And if there are big injuries or underperformance then the kids can soak up those extra PAs. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking bench players won't get enough playing time, but once the season starts and injuries/rest come up it almost always works out.
  15. If Turner's cooked he's probably going to hit a lot like Jon Berti or Carson Kelly, coincidentally the two guys who'd get that playing time of we didn't bother signing Turner to start with.
  16. Yeah I feel like every time the Cubs acquire a hitter their ZiPS projection is the rosiest of those available and nearly every pitcher they acquire their PitchingBot scores are glowing. The team said they were going to start leaning on their model more and good or bad they're doing it.
  17. With this locked in, curious who the last bench spot goes to. Berti's versatility means you don't have to base the decision on covering a specific spot. - Brujan sucks, and his versatility is kind if moot with Berti, but does the fact the team traded for him mean they think they can coach more out of his bat? - Canario has power none of the other options have, and he's kind of a CF which is the spot you feel least comfortable with Berti covering - Workman is probably the most talented guy here. And as a lefty IFer that's nice. But with him skipping AAA as a Rule 5 pick how much can he really contribute early? - Nicky Lopez sucks, but that contact/defense profile isn't the worst for a 26th man I lean Workman probably? Though regardless of how it goes I'd be a bit surprised if the guy is still on the roster come Memorial Day. He's keeping a spot warm for whichever of Alcantara/Caissie goes off at Iowa first.
  18. He's primarily a 1B at this point. You can probably count on your fingers the number of times he'll play 2B or 3B this year. You will definitely be able to count it with your fingers and toes combined.
  19. Sweet. Now add Robertson, someone make a crude Wild Hogs or 80 For Brady photoshop with Turner/DRob/Pressly/Thielbar, and let's get this show on the road.
  20. Last Top 100 (I think?) Matt Shaw - 15 Owen Caissie - 19 Kevin Alcantara - 56 Moises Ballesteros - 58 Jefferson Rojas - 88 Cade Horton - 98 James Triantos - 114 (he's in the top 10 2B list) No Hope or Ferris. Not surprising at all on the former. Cam Smith was like Triantos where he showed up on the 3B list and apparently is 129
  21. From the Athletic this AM.
  22. I assume this is like a Taxi Squad deal?
