I'd want Ramirez to run out everything, regardless of the poss. of himpulling something, that includes singles that could've been doubles and so on. It's not an either or case of woukd you rather have the more productive player who doesn't hustle, which it appears you're trying to shift it to as no one has mentioned anything beyond Jones running out grounders. In this instance, if there's a player who's talented but has the rep. of being a loafer, I'd rather see him hustle.

Sure it does and depending on the situation if the defender bobbles it or throws it poorly, increases the chances of getting on base. Also, there's nothing negative that can come from running out a play. Would you rather not have them run it out? Do you want them to not hustle?

Agreed that luck is basically an unexplained event, a pitcher can have perfect mechanics, ideal workloads, and solid eating and in-season and off-season cont. programs and still suffer arm injuries. No could find a reason why he got injured, there probably isn't a sound reason. For Liriano, that doesn't appear to be the case as he isn't where he needs to be mechanically to endure the stress he is putting on his elbow. I'm not in a position to gauge the severity of his injury.

Is this good news though? My point being if he didn't hold up at that level, what hope is there that he will be able to string together 2 or 3 years of full time workhorse pitching? Fantastic arm. It would be a shame if he went the Wood route. Depends on how well he can improve mechanically over time and his off-season and in-season conditioning programs and luck (or bad luck this case). Usage is just one of many factors that could lead to a potential injury, especially with Liriano's arm angle.

You can play in as many games or watch as many games as the body can take, but if you don't know what to look for, it most likely isn't doing you any good. I've never understood this idea that you'll learn less from watching half the games compared to all of the games. Baseball is about feel, like everything else those who are gifted will go further than those aren't. Give two people a book to read and give the same test (assuming they read it and had the same attention span), one will do better than the other for the same reason some can incorporate more about baseball than others. Nobody is right and nobody is wrong.

That is because he packed on a couple of pounds since then. Bengie had a 3.55 CERA last year. 3rd best in all of baseball. Barrett had a 4.45 CERA last year. Isn't a 32yo. C that has been gaining too much weight for his own good a red flag? He isn't quick behind the plate and has been terrible at throwing out runners. He has thrown out 17.5% of the runners. Molina has a 4.55 CERA this year. Barrett is at 4.57. Although, I really don't like that stat. One thing that coaches would tell that they dont like about Molina is the number of pass balls he allows. Im not sure what his numbers are this year in that category, but last year he allowed 10 with the Angels. That can be contributed to the number of pitchers like K-Rod who throw alot of balls in the dirt. Although, he still has 10 PBs, there are far greater concerns than that as I eluded to earlier why a team would be taking a gamble on him long-term.

The situation determines the quality of that AB rather than the event itself, that's what separates it from the ABs that don't cost the team an out in the process. In a tie or down by 1 run game, the value of advancing or is much greater than down by 3 or 4 runs late.

He's regressed since his Angels days, he was doing so before he left Anaheim. His delivery is slower as his arm strength and his quickness around the plate isn't what it was 5 years ago.

I forgot to mention players I was disappointed in... I thought the O-line did a poor job in general, not much running room for Jones/Benson and Miller espec. on Kampman for pass protection. The play calling was interesting, I like the emphasis w/McKie as well Clark. I would've like to have seen more 3 WR sets on 1st down as well as more draws and screen towards Kampman's side. -

All around that was a fairly played game against a real bad team. Last year, that probably would've been a 13-3 type of game. For the 1st week, I'm impressed. Most impressed with Moose and Clark. Grossman did well also. -
Not to offend, but I think Vandy's a little better than those three. They fought with Michigan last week and nearly beat Bama today. Chris Nickson looks pretty solid, I think he's gonna be good. They'll be in that 3-5 win territory like UK, Ole Miss., and Miss St. 3-5 is the ceiling for UK, Ole Miss, and Miss St., though. Vandy is more likely to hit 4-5 and, with a couple realisitic upsets, could reach 6 and a bowl. UK with their schedule has a good chance to get more wins than Vandy.

So you would take Freel or Clark over Wells? I think you guys are getting to caught up with the whole OBP. I would take the guy who hits around .300 with 30HR and 100RBI a year, over a guy like Freel or Clark who will only put up a .370 OBP. Wells does not hit .300/30/100 a year. And considering the costs, I probably would take Clark and especially Freel. I said around .300 with 30HR and 100RBI. The cost would be Barrett and someone else. Then you sign Bengie Molina. Let me understand this, if... Toronto trades Wells to the Cubs for Barrett and the Cubs sign Molina (who has a 7.5 mil option) next year, why would Toronto do this? Why wouldn't they keep Wells and exercise the option on Molina?

UK rolled over 1-AA Texas St. and now Swiss Miss is up next. It'll be a good battle of the SEC's worst (throw Vandy and Miss. St. into that mix).

He is the opposite of Baker in that regard, LaRussa does use stats more than a traditional R/L match-up and I do find myself agreeing with Tony's thought process moreso than Baker's. With that said, LaRussa is way too much of a micromanager for me as I find his moves to be at the expense of keeping a productive reliever in for a better statistical match-up which exposes the inconsistent nature of a player for statistical advantages. Assuming similar workloads and fatigue, I would feel more comfortable with a reliever that has done well to the 1st few batters he has faced rather than bringing him someone new (also assuming they have been similar in production throughout the year).

Considering Dierker's career as one of the few managers that was a former pitcher, it is true yet ironic. -
As critical as I am of the UK football program, that U of I team is about equal as far as futility. That 1st quarter was one of the worst in every aspect of the game. I can't remember a game where a team allowed a TD on offense, defense, and ST in the same quarter.

Letting Baker go like that does more harm than good. Any prospective manager would consider that a ridiculous move and if there was any demand for a prospective manager would likely weigh heavily in deciding between 2 or 3 organizations. Let Baker manager the rest of the year, no reason to humiliate him.

Don't let the White Sox pitchers off the hook in that equation (except Buehrle), as a group they are horrible at keeping runners on, espec. Garcia. While Pierzynski's arm is below avg., it's not Victor Martinez bad who also suffers from a group of pitchers that doesn't do a good job of keeping runners honest.
