  1. I think a helathy Izturis will be fine for this team, provided some offensive upgrades are made elsewhere. Its hard to speculate what the team will look like, but I'd be more than happy with him at SS hitting 8th. I think if that was his role he could have a successful year. If they upgrade elsewhere, is the upgrade assumed at 2B? If so, the question becomes Izturis vs. Cedeno? Given contract situations and long-term benefits, I'd go with Cedeno even though Izturis is likely the better short-term fix. Of course, Piniella will look short-term especially in his 1st year.
  2. Wright and Reyes are the core of those good players, who happen to be extremely good and come from within and currently underpaid for their production. Their value allows the Mets to pay FA prices for Beltran and surround him with very good players.
  3. Sometimes you have to cater to a strength of a player, Soriano has been a better hitter hitting leadoff than any other spot in the order. Even last year, when Wash. tried him 3rd and 5th, he hit better at the top. Of course, this runs parallel with the Cubs needing a leadoff hitter. It'll never be a cookie cutter ideal lineup but Soriano would be significant upgrade.
  4. Showing interest and going after them is different than actually getting them. I don't see the Cubs getting all 3 or getting to a point where they realistically plot Murton into a 4th OF'er role. Nor, do I think a 4th OF'er can get 400ABs minus injuries or a starter struggling.
  5. All I've heard about is how intense he is... He's one of the better in-game managers in the game especially with the pen, Leyland and LaRussa are probaboy the best, IMO. Beyond here, there hasn't been any mention of the negatives that he'll probably bring.
  6. I'm happy with the win, if they play like that the rest of the year, they'll go 6-10. Green was right, AZ gave that game away. It doesn't take away the defense's ability to create and produce from turnovers as well as how solid special teams played, but they played terrible. I think I developed a dislike for Leinhart based on last night's broadcast, he's also headed to the HoF.
  7. I'd like to get out there and that helps, but I'd be surprised if I got out there for skiing.
  8. Team thinks AZ would've just laid down and they can half-ass it and still win.
  9. Too bad Lou didn't hire Joe to be his bench coach. The best part of the hire is the bench coach-McLaren. This might be the closest to having McLaren as manager as I expect Piniella to get ejected and suspended at various points during the next 3 years. As much as Lou gets credit for being a great in-game manager, McLaren is usually the one that pulls those strings. Lou is known as an aggressive manager on the bases. Where is McLaren from? I have never heard his name mentioned much for managers positions, why? Do we have any possibilities for the hitting coach and such? I have heard Chris Chambliss name mentioned as a possibility. Why is he a good choice? McLaren has been a coach with Piniella since his days in Cincy. He had interviews with Sea., TB, Cincy, and LA.
  10. This team has the problem of thinking it's better than what it is. They're good, but not good enough to take weeks off.
  11. Probably higher than Baker, but not where it should be if it's a weakness that needs to improve.
  12. [expletive], my skiing will be short this year. I might sneak a couple of trips out to Vail/A-Basin but it will be baseball intensive with baseball clinics. I'll be in Seattle in a couple of weeks as well as NYC in January as well as some local ones in December. Once Feb. comes around, the HS Spring starts to stir.

  14. I yelled it out the car window down Rte. 31. Didn't hear me?
  15. I noticed that when I saw him early this season. Unbelievable, the resemblance. What many people don't realize is that many teams, Cubs included, passed on Reyes and let him go to the 13th based on the assumption he was injury prone. I haven't done any research on his college career, which was at USC the same time as Prior I believe, so not sure where the injury worries stemmed from. But how about that for irony. :? He had a great fresh. year then had elbow injuries for the next 3 years while at USC.
  16. Reyes needs to quit being pretty and overpower them with his FB as almost every swing is late.
  17. Raisin, I was speaking of better candidates out there right now than Piniella & Girardi. I think Bochy is the best avail., but at this stage, I like the candidates for the Rangers moreso than the Cubs.
  18. While his FB doesn't have the same pop as Prior, it is equally deceptively quick to the hitter.
  19. Reyes has all the mannerisms of Prior. Hell of a steal by STL.
  20. The main difference is the application process. Why does Cuse and Bruno tend to offer more of an emphasis on hustle than hustle? Because they're involved with coaching and the majority of their time is probably geared towards HS players and players they have a direct result in changing/improving. If the majority of your time is involved with watching major and minor leaguers and is based almost exclusively on production, you'll likely disregard hustle as long as the player produces. This also is changed by the fact, that the impact you'll have on the player is none compared to that of a coach. I'm much more involved with the local amatuer levels than the majors and it impacts my thought process as far as wanting a greater degree of hustle. Another factor might be the stereotypes surrounding "old-school grinder baseball" and how much someone might look forward to that and others who don't particulary care for it as long as the result is the same.
  21. Damn stat geeks and their new stats! :)
  22. What? When have the Cubs tried to build from within? They're going to try & win now coming off a 90+ loss season and a declining farm system. It's ironic that it's the exact scheme that they've tried forever, including hiring a "proven" manager.
  23. I think Torre is always a possibility if the Yankees don't win the WS in '07. Of course, I think the better candidates (minus Bochy) will be avail. next year as well as currently depending on the Cubs having narrowed it down to Girardi/Piniella. I believe there are better managers out there.
  24. That's already likely reserved for McLaren, who should already be a manager.
