  1. But they were certainly working on those plans before then. It also serves the purpose of keeping the Cubs in the headlines. They do have to maintain interest in the meantime.
  2. I'm not sure what you are saying is different than what I am saying. Well, you were saying that maybe they were never serious about spending, which to me sounds like you think they've basically just been lying. I think they do want to do all of things they've talked about, but they've just mostly [expletive] it up. No. I was saying they may have wanted to start way back when they foolishly thought they could get hundreds of millions from the government during a massive recession. And that now they have to wait until the TV money comes in because the thought of a jumbotron and a couple signs offsetting the cost of a $500m project doesn't add up. I wasn't saying they were never serious about spending, just not about the timing of when they were going to spend.
  3. Source? Agree -- right now it seems very unclear as to which team's offer was more, the Yankees or the Cubs. We have Passan saying the Cubs may have been slightly higher, and Rosenthal saying the Yankees were higher. Twitter seems in agreement that the Yankees' decision to up their offer to include a 7th year, an opt-out after year 4, and a no-trade clause were each instrumental, but none of this really speaks to which offer was "greater" in terms of total dollars (or whether the Cubs were already offering each of these sweeteners). The notion that the New York Freaking Yankees are somehow getting guys at a discount is [expletive] laughable. If you believe that, you are fooling yourself.
  4. Since MLB bailed out the Yankees that resigning doesn't even look all that bad.
  5. They've missed on Cespedes, Darvish, Ryu and Tanaka. There's no guarantee at all that they'll sign free agents entering their prime "any and every day." Of course not. They're free agents. There's no guarantee that they'll sign any ever. But they've demonstrated a willingness to offer very big, competitive (sometimes the highest) bids to these types of FAs. They can't force people to sign contracts They can do a better job of not offering up a terrible team for those free agents to play for.
  6. I'm not sure what you are saying is different than what I am saying.
  7. Yeah, in a lot of ways it's like how poorly Hendry botched the OF situation in the early 00's which pretty much forced them to sign Soriano. It's not the missed signing that's the issue, it's the position where they have put the team. You can choose to cheat the prospect building game by tanking games, but you can't then hide from the fact that you have a crappy team as a result.
  8. What the hell does $225m have to do with it?
  9. There's not a single name on this list that you'd like to sign as a FA that you think will actually make it to FA next year? And even if that's true, it's good that the Cubs are still allowed to trade. He very clearly said "as attractive".
  10. Why would they even propose the project, then? I'm not saying I disagree with you (this whole matter is very confusing and there is a lot of information we aren't privy to), but why go to the length of rolling out these proposed renovations if the end goal is too drag your feet until the project is dead? It may have started with the foolish notion that they would have gotten money from the government. But it was also part of the storyline they are selling both season ticket holders and potential television partners. That story being that ownership is gung-ho about pouring money into this team at any moment, just as long as everything else lines up perfectly. They talked big about the construction from day one of their ownership and everybody covering the Cubs knew it needed massive overhaul. They sold Theo on a complete renovation that would mirror Fenway. The threat of a lawsuit is just not a justifiable reason not to begin months ago. Large projects take lots of time and plenty of lawsuits take place. When you have money and city approval, you start, then deal with problems as they come up. That is, unless you were never serious about spending the money.
  11. yes he's pretty damn good To what extent is the damn?
  12. That's 16 WAR. Give them another 4 from the bench for an even 20 and that would be 21st on this list: http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Team
  13. You'd think this thing would be so lopsided, but with the way the Cubs are seemingly desperate to avoid a lawsuit it's pretty worrisome. That's where the story doesn't add up. They should be able to afford better lawyers and handle any lawsuit rather easily, the fact that they are waiting for guarantees that one won't happen (and lawsuits are always going to happen) suggests to me they just don't want to start the project.
  14. Maybe I'm understanding it wrong but the rooftops didn't sue the Cubs directly. They are suing that Gians guy and the Cubs are named as a defendant. Brett has a good write up of it. I don't know law talk but isn't the defendant what you call the people getting sued? He called them a "discovery" party, which sounds awesome if the Vikings are involved.
  15. Tanaka wasn't making the 2014 Cubs a playoff team. And who knows what the team will look like heading into 2015. Too many possible FAs, trades, etc to write that off today. Not that it will stop you. But when you add those 2015 FA/trades/ETC to a team with Tanaka or without Tanaka it makes a large difference. It matters what point you are at when you start adding those things. We can't pretend like you can just add more stuff later on to make up for what you miss today. There is a scarcity of talent out there and a lot of other teams who are actually willing to pay for it.
  16. hasn't samardzija made it clear he's not enjoying being a participant in this "rebuild?" I don't think he wants to resign and I don't think they want to resign him. They can certainly afford to just go ahead and give him a lot more, but I don't think it happens.
  17. They made Ryno the highest paid player in baseball. Before that everybody spent about $20m on their payrolls. It wasn't until the mid-to-late 90's when payrolls really started to shoot up with the Yankees/Orioles playing leapfrog. And the Cubs were consistently 10-12 until climbing to the top 5-6. Cheapness was never the issue people claimed it was at the time. It was stupidity. Now they are no longer stupid but much more cheap.
  18. It hasn't. The late 1990s/early 2000s farm systems were quite productive. But you had ownership that wasn't willing to spend to keep that talent. You're not going to see that with today's prospects. Who could you possibly be talking about?? Wait, the previous ownership wasn't willing to spend?
  19. I'm not sure they ever thought there would be a point when a lawsuit wouldn't occur. They were probably never prepared to spend $500m to upgrade the place, and there is no way a jumbotron or other sign would pay for that either. They probably need to wait until additional TV revenue comes in before they can afford to pay for work. So this is all likely a delay on their end while constantly blaming the rooftops and/or the city.
  20. What'd they say? Crane alluded to how much of a revenue drain the rooftops are on the team - said $20M - (which is kind of ridiculous even though I hate the RTOs) and Ricketts compared them to a neighbor peering through the window and watching your Showtime shows who gets mad when you close the drapes. Plus something about how after 202? they will be completely shut out and worthless. Right?
  21. Seriously, why don't people get this? It is not an accomplishment to build up the farm system when your only mandate is to build up the farm system. If all you do is lose, trim major league payroll and sell off veterans, it is inevitable that your farm system will go up. That isn't an accomplishment. An accomplishment is contending while at the same time maintaining a strong farm.
  22. They've been much worse for much longer than they were under previous ownership. Don't blame the tribune for Ricketts mess. They have owned the team outright for 4 full seasons now and nearly 5 total offseasons. This entire organization is a Ricketts organization, and the losses are on them. We're in a better place than what? Nobody asked him to flip a switch, but we are well past flip switching time. All this nonsense about how this team isn't a mess is a joke. The team is a mess. There is no argument to be made otherwise. They have won job, win major league baseball games, and they are terrible at that.
  23. I will probably have my daughter's wedding as a conflict by then anyway.
  24. I kind of have, but not as much as I thought. I think it helps that unlike last year's brief season, we've had several games against the other Original 6 teams. It is kind of weird that we are like the estranged Original 6 team stuck all the way out in the Western Conference. Rocky and McDonough pointed that out when it was announced and while I was hesitant to believe it would make up for it I think it clearly has. Plus, home and homes with all three NY area teams gives me an opportunity to attend more games.
