  1. And the quality of a major league career tells you nothing about how well that guy can coach.
  2. At least one of them, if not both, will hit the open market. They aren't going to take discounts and they aren't going to sign early long term deals. I'm betting neither of them do until well past 30. Neither of those teams are small market teams. Harper's agent is Scott Boras. I can't remember a time where Boras had his client sign a long-term extension prior to free agency, but maybe I'm wrong. Based on Boras's practice, it wouldn't surprise me if the Nationals had to pay a heavy premium to keep him away from free agency. Didn't Boras have ARod sign an extension with the Yankees? Or was that what led to them parting ways? They aren't going to get team friendly discounts, but it can be signed.
  3. So he's very progressive when it comes to gay marriage/rights but a regular PTA member when it comes to marijuana. The title says, "before Super Bowl", but of course, it was days before, not during warmups. Guys getting high for kickoff would bother me, but days before? Are you kidding me? Who cares?
  4. Boo to the Oltiphiles. He didn't tweak his hammy, his brain and eyes don't work.
  5. Maybe the organization wasn't happy with what he did last year.
  6. http://deadspin.com/a-complete-roundup-of-fans-idiotic-david-price-trade-p-1511569573 Well sourced David Price rumors.
  7. Well yeah, he's the quintessential meathead/toughguy/jock personality who also happens to play middle linebacker. That's going to make him dislike every QB, whether they play on his team or another. I'm sure Butkus was the same way, especially at that age. But back then there wasn't as much movement from team to team by players so he may have been a bit more supportive of his own guy. Urlacher also worshiped at the alter of Lovie, and he probably sees Emery/Cutler as major reasons why Lovie was fired.
  8. That seems like an unlikely explanation. Brian has not know you don't get paid by popularity and that QBs make more than middle linebackers. Urlacher doesn't like Cutler. He spent his career on a team with a defensive mindset that had to play through incompetent QB play. Toward the end of his career Urlacher had the opportunity to actually play with a competent QB, and probably thought he had a shot to win a Super Bowl. But when all was said and done, Urlacher's career ended with a string of mediocre seasons and Cutler was unable to salvage it. So, he probably felt let down by Jay as well as just genuinely disliking Cutler's personality.
  9. Because he thinks he has very limited upside and that all the guys above him presumably have a higher upside. And he places greater value on upside than just the ability to make a team. Also, he probably differentiates between "looking" like a lock and actually being a lock, because, of course, he is not a lock.
  10. A few more top ten picks and pretty soon he will have no choice but to give us our due.
  11. It wouldn't be about 60 at bats in March. So it'd be about the last 400 PAs with the Rangers and Cubs AAA teams (.745 OPS with the Rangers, .207 BAPIP with the Cubs) completely overshadowing the prior 1,000 MILB PAs? Even with a widely reported medical issue going on? Look, maybe his eyes/head will never be normal again, and if that's the case, that sucks for him. But that's something the medical team has to decide, not Theo looking at him for 3 weeks next month and declaring him broken. If he's healthy...he needs to have a shot somewhere. The upside is too high. I didn't say cut the guy. The odds are he's not going to do anything of value. The point is you don't need to fret over a "logjam" at 3B in AAA. If he can't make this team, he is not a priority.
  12. You consistently post the dumbest comments.
  13. It wouldn't be about 60 at bats in March.
  14. If he doesn't, why would we want to extend him? Because an underwhelming first half will still likely leave him as our best starting pitcher. With a very limited resume at a relatively advanced age. Unless he's suddenly dying to give a discount there would be no reason to sign him after a disappointing first half. And I cannot imagine him suddenly offering a discount unless he was hiding some sort of injury.
  15. He's 25 years old and this team sucks. If he can't make it, he's not going anywhere. Throw him in AAA and let him find ABs where he can, but there's no reason to worry about a logjam.
  16. If Olt can't win a job on this year's Cubs teams then I do not think you have to worry about getting him reps.
  17. Those are some unbelievably great storylines on 5 of the 8 series if it were to hold: Pens/Wings, Bruins/Habs, Leafs/Rangers, Hawks/Canucks, Blues/Kings Also, potential 2nd round matchups of Hawks/Blues and Pens/Leafs That isn't how the playoffs work anymore. Is that yahoo link even accurate? I don't see the "divisional matchup" aspect at play at all. No, it's not accurate. I think ESPN is showing the same, and I haven't been able to find anything that gives a breakdown of what we might be seeing.

  19. That's true, it is much better to not risk anything and guarantee a top ten draft pick than take a risk and maybe draft in the bottom half someday.
  20. Schmelzer? I don't even know her.
  21. Are there still weirdos who think the sale structure nonsense is true?
  22. Every? No, but I very much like the idea with certain situations. One of those situations is when you've already let your payroll plummet to ridiculously low levels, have nothing else to spend it on and are in desperate need of exactly the type of player that is available if such a clause is given.
  23. You're getting four years of upside if things work out and seven years of downside if they go sideways. You don't see a problem? You're getting seven years of downside if things go sideways regardless. You just said one post up that you don't like going 7 years for pitchers, well there you go, you managed to get him signed to a 4 year deal assuming he doesn't get injured. Send him on his way and let his elbow explode for somebody else. I'm not sure I understand your POV here. Would you be in favor of giving player options in every contract? I can understand if you're saying we should have signed him regardless. But you seem to be saying that giving the player an opt out makes it a BETTER contract. How do you interpret it that way? The point is you offer the contract necessary to sign the guy, because you can, and because you need the player. It's not that big of a deal to give him a 4-year opt out. If he does opt out, odds are that you're going to be extremely happy about what happened in the meantime. Maybe in year 5 you won't need the player as much as you need him now. You can deal with that issue when the time comes.
  24. If any other player charged the mound after a teammate got beaned in a Venezuelan League game, would anybody make note?
