  2. The game before was the HSC collision, right? yep
  3. The point has never been you need an elite QB to win a Super Bowl. Or that a defense can't win one for you. The point is that you cannot stay consistently good while depending on an elite defense. To be dominant on defense you need several studs on defense. That route gets expensive in a hurry as members reach free agency and get to move on. And then they get old as well. If you are fortunate enough to draft as well as Seattle has on defense all within a couple years and then also have the fortune of drafting a quality QB in the third and have him contribute immediately, you can replicate their success. But that's not a recipe for a decade of contending. Seattle also has 2 1st rounders on the offensive line and another 2nd.
  4. I know I was there the day before, but I cannot remember what I did for this game.
  5. What awesome plays? Sloppy TAINTS and unforced safeties ended the game before it began.
  6. We all know it won't be aired during the Super Bowl. Just like every other "banned ad" it's designed to maximize views online.
  7. Not HOF related but, There are some fantastic breweries in the general area. Plan on taint a day and do a tour. You won't regret it. This is the type of investigative reporting I was looking for!! No, really... I definitely would like recommendations on the baseball and nonbaseball related activities to undergo while there! Any brewery recommendations? Taint day is huge up there.
  8. Somebody has to pitch on Wednesdays.
  9. I don't think I'd characterize it as a needle in a haystack. I don't think it is any harder to find guys who can start and be effective for a couple years than it would be to find guys who can start and be effective for 15. Most teams are probably either ignoring those guys or have already slated them for the bullpen. It seems to me that a lot of the sentiment against the midgets is just that they won't be prototypical aces with a shot at the hall of fame. Every scout wants Clemens, but I think certain front offices, including this one, would be happy to get 5-6 years of Rich Harden, pay him $10-15m and then let him walk or trade him.
  10. Looks like he thinks Black can still be a starter. Has four pitches, the only question is the durability. I agree with Law. Keep Black in the rotation as long as he continues to show plus stuff. The guy at Bleachernation had an interesting piece the other day on Black's change of approach after coming over to the Cubs. http://www.bleachernation.com/2014/01/28/prospects-progress-corey-black/ This addresses the theory that the Cubs are acquiring undervalued pitching prospects because of their size. I wonder if part of that theory is the front office isn't necessarily looking for a guy who can throw 220 innings for 15 years, but would be quite happy to get guys who can throw 190 innings for 5 years. If you can get that sort of performance out of undersized pitchers, you will essentially use up all of their cost effective years, and then let the doctors, pitcher and/or another team figure out how he'll make due during his late 20s/early 30s.
  11. I was too confused to even ask the question.
  12. Of course Bonds had a little help along the way. I don't know how to break it to you, but Barry Bonds doesn't control lightning. winner winner chicken dinner
  13. But Lance did it the right way!!!
  14. There's little to nothing that Alcantara could do this year (within reason) that would make me deem a rebounded Castro expendable. The other two guys, given their status and pedigree skill sets? Sure. I'm ready to deem Castro expendable right now, but apparently we want to wait for his stats to rebound and assume the market price will reflect it when they do. That's fine, but there's two different discussions here. I can see the argument for him being expendable right now. But if he actually does rebound in 2014 it is a different story.
  15. Someone's being used suboptimally in that situation. Bryant may be a 3-win 3b but only a 2-win RF. Much like the goal is not to pay the least amount of dollars per win, or fielding the most efficient roster. The goal is also not to avoid any sub optimal situation. Insisting on trading away quality young cost controlled players to avoid a sub optimal utilization of another player is a good way to throw away production.
  16. Sure, we could do that. But that leaves us with a SS who hasn't adapted well to our preferred offensive approach and is probably the only asset on the team with the value to return the kind of pitching we need to be competitive in 2015/16. If you have 4 3 WAR IF and a 3 WAR RF all under 25 do you really need that great of pitching to be competitive in 2015/16? At that point, keep the runs flowing and let average pitching get the job done.
  17. But what if we have a full set of other 3-win infielders? Full set? For one, we won't. For two, that's why God made the outfield.
  18. I love Tillman, but Bailey is clearly a better player. I think Bailey is in the Hall, Tillman is not. Tillman might make it because he had a "thing". His ability to force a turnover is so unique and consistent, it might be something that gets him in if it's close. That type of guy probably needs a Super Bowl win to make it.
  19. Well, are you not counting cubinny's dreams?
  20. http://voices.suntimes.com/sports/charles-tillman-guarantees-he-will-retire-a-bear/ "Retiring a (fill-in team name here)" is an easily achieved empty gesture. This statement is meaningless, other than the "no bad blood" part.
  21. Does he smell like cabbage?
  22. would have worked better if you didn't include the footnote
  23. He opted out after 7 years of the original 10 year deal with the Rangers, but I'm not sure if he ever got to actual free agency in terms of timing of when the deal was signed. He certainly could have signed with anyone that off season though. Oh that's right. He opted out, and then fired Boras because of the timing, then negotiated directly with the Steinbrenners (and no other teams) with a Goldman Sachs exec.
