  1. The money is absolutely there if they wanted to spend it. They don't want it to be spent right now.
  2. They might not be in contention come October 1st, but they should be able to at least play meaningful baseball games for quite a while and give themselves a chance to add help later on.
  3. Word is LA only needed 5 minutes and when they were done Tanaka's people had to chase done Colletti's agent at the lobby bar to collect their fee.
  4. Is that a small amount?
  5. He's definitely Mr Negativity in regards to all things Cubs. It's pretty clear the front office has entirely shut off him and Sullivan from any remotely insider information, and they're both pretty upset about it. It's hilarious. How is that clear at all? Wittenmeyer seems like he does get some actual info, and Sullivan's angle has not changed one bit during his decades of covering the team.
  6. He's definitely Mr Negativity in regards to all things Cubs. Well Sullivan's playing off the "Cubs are abandoning their 88 year olds in Peoria that have a booster club" story, so GW ain't running away with the title.
  7. alright, this went off the rails for no good reason.
  8. Hopes of becoming relevant again and maybe appear on some reality show.
  9. http://deadspin.com/davone-bess-arrested-for-assaulting-an-officer-1503356696 Davone Bess is doing it.
  10. Harding has never looked good, in interviews or otherwise, today, or long ago.
  11. It's collectively bargained as a whole. Think of it the same as the national TV deal. There are no internet media rights for the Cubs to sell. Could they start their own online porn site?
  12. The writing was on the wall with that one a long time ago. You're more in the area so you probably have a better idea than I do, but I didn't get that impression. In fact, it seemed like everyone was resigned to the "the yankees are going to blow past the luxury tax threshold" idea at this point. Not that "people in the know" are involved, but the Yankees fans I talk to were all convinced ARod would be off the books for 2014 and the Yankees would do whatever it took to reset the threshold.
  13. Which is why my preference is for them to just come to an agreement for the "WGN games" and let Fox and Comcast/NBC plus potential wild cards battle it out for the whole enchilada when the time is right.
  14. The writing was on the wall with that one a long time ago.
  15. Right, the fee would go up once the deal grows from the 70 WGN games to all 162 (minus national games). But if they are locking themselves into paying for something they won't be able to profit off of until 2020, they are going to get a discount.
  16. My guess is that any TV/Cable deal beyond the "WGN games" that are currently on the table, would result in a somewhat disappointing dollar figure. If Fox local was to buy the rights through 2019 with an agreement for Fox Cable to take over after 2019, that money would probably be dwarfed by the agreements that other teams have negotiated for the full package starting in the near future. That would be a sign of desperation on the Cubs part, albeit, potentially well placed desperation. Compare it to an arbitration eligible player signing through his free agency years for a team friendly discount, and the more aggressive player who is willing to go year-to-year and wait until actual free agency to sign a mega deal. My preference is for the Cubs to just agree to a local agreement with a boost in revenue and then prepare their 2020 options. The sports bubble may burst, but it is not going to disappear. Televised games will still draw a lot of money in 2021. This is the USA we are talking about, you can count on the government doing whatever it can to maintain the status quo for established cable companies, such that in 2018 or 2019 somebody will still be willing to pay lots of money for the rights to air Cubs games.
  17. I assume the "cable rights" owned by CSN would make that difficult.
  18. You would think that someone that is a professional athlete would buy in larger quantity. When possession of larger quantities results in exponentially larger punishment*, I don't see why. *I assume that's how it works.
  19. I have no idea what you're trying to say here. What is the 2+2=3 thing? Are you really expecting those guys to get like $20MM a year? There's no way Tanaka gets less than maybe $18MM if you include the posting fee with all the competition for him. The point is combined they will be well above Tanaka individually, so you can't really replace Tanaka with the two of them. Davell asked if Tanaka would be worth more than those two combined.
  20. Sesmic? Is Billy Joel putting on weight again? No, he's just gonna crash his car through the LF wall and the bleachers are gonna crumble Seems like they should wait until a Cardinals series for that stunt.
  21. I guess I understand he wants to maintain the narrative, but Bryant is either going to play third or corner OF. The "left side of the infield" is for guys who can play short but may move to third.
  22. What's dumb about that photo? really? I'm guessing raw was making a joke.
