    To be fair, Crawford has been extremely average since coming back and got a pretty much undeserved contract extension in the offseason. People were down on Crawford well before Raanta was involved. The gap presently and going forward is far greater between Cutler and McCown than Crawford and Raanta or really many other goalies in the NHL. Plus Raanta is a young prospect and Crawford was not some highly touted stud. This is nothing like Cutler McCown and the comparison was idiotic.

    Individual tickets went on sale March 8th last year, so you can expect something similar to be announced in February. As for atmosphere, I think the only area where you purposefully sit for atmosphere is the bleachers. That used to be the cheap seats where young people would go drink, make out and pass out. They became a hot item and regularly sold for over $100 on secondary market during the good times. You can probably get them for free this season. If you want to sit in the sun and drink and socialize, do the bleachers. If you want to enjoy the game a bit more do the grandstands. Upper deck toward the front are probably the best value. If the team sucks, do not expect good atmosphere. And the beginning of May could vary from freezing rain to sunny and beautiful. So be prepared.

    Which is wiped out by arb raises. BR has an estimated 70.5M committed for 2015, though this would include Shark's Arb 3 estimate. So with 25M to play with, SP and OF being the only overwhelming needs, and the pathetic rumored returns for Samardzija, yes, I'd extend Shark Eh, I don't think Samardzija is actually going to be all that good for the next few years, and with it being so obvious that Tanaka was going to be a one off, I could go either way here. He's there's to use for the next two years anyway. I see very little value in extending him, unless you think you will need to extend him to convince others to come here. But I just don't see other players viewing Samardzija as that type of player.

    I don't get what you mean. MLB was trying to suspend him without pay for like a year and a half, costing him $30m. Their punishment was going to be above and beyond what the CBA called for. He was fighting for the right to be treated fairly under the rules and save several million.

    Kemp? What about Hamels? If Philly really takes a dump, they could. But they have a crap ton of revenue coming in now and can easily afford to keep him while trying to rebuild with other things. I don't really see them wanting to move him, plus it would probably take a whole hell of a lot of talent. So, not a true salary dump.

    He's so good at hitting, that if he had a position he'd be in the discussion for top 4. What about the fact that his OPS was 25th in the Midwest League last year? I get the theory that his bat would place him very high if he actually played well at 1B and that he did actually destroy AZ and the NWL, but if it is all about the bat, shouldn't the lack of dominance last year be a little disappointing? His number one goal, according to him and the FO was to learn to go the other way more, which they thought would result in a power decrease initially. Okay. But again, in order for this guy to make it he's going to have to hit like a beast, which means top of the list. He was 25th in OPS in the Midwest League. We know he can't field, we don't know how well he can hit. I think we need to see him at the top of the leaderboard. There's nobody else screaming to take his place here, but I'm looking to push him as far down as possible until he actually does dominate a full seaosn league with the bat.

    I think they did that, expecting to do more this year, but got scared off by Castro and Rizzo not making strides. So, they took a step back, since payroll is an issue with us and they didn't want to box themselves in. That is a frightening concept.

    Strange thing about this mess in Cleveland is that Jimmy Haslam's dad is a major booster at Tennessee and is mostly hands off and patient - completely the opposite of the Cleveland mess going on. I hear Haslam's name brought up a lot but is Michael Lombardi just some sort of figure head? I thought the deal was he was named GM after Chud was hired, which ultimately led to Chud not being a match with the new regime.

    But they were certainly working on those plans before then. It also serves the purpose of keeping the Cubs in the headlines. They do have to maintain interest in the meantime.

    I'm not sure what you are saying is different than what I am saying. Well, you were saying that maybe they were never serious about spending, which to me sounds like you think they've basically just been lying. I think they do want to do all of things they've talked about, but they've just mostly [expletive] it up. No. I was saying they may have wanted to start way back when they foolishly thought they could get hundreds of millions from the government during a massive recession. And that now they have to wait until the TV money comes in because the thought of a jumbotron and a couple signs offsetting the cost of a $500m project doesn't add up. I wasn't saying they were never serious about spending, just not about the timing of when they were going to spend.

    Source? Agree -- right now it seems very unclear as to which team's offer was more, the Yankees or the Cubs. We have Passan saying the Cubs may have been slightly higher, and Rosenthal saying the Yankees were higher. Twitter seems in agreement that the Yankees' decision to up their offer to include a 7th year, an opt-out after year 4, and a no-trade clause were each instrumental, but none of this really speaks to which offer was "greater" in terms of total dollars (or whether the Cubs were already offering each of these sweeteners). The notion that the New York Freaking Yankees are somehow getting guys at a discount is [expletive] laughable. If you believe that, you are fooling yourself.

    They've missed on Cespedes, Darvish, Ryu and Tanaka. There's no guarantee at all that they'll sign free agents entering their prime "any and every day." Of course not. They're free agents. There's no guarantee that they'll sign any ever. But they've demonstrated a willingness to offer very big, competitive (sometimes the highest) bids to these types of FAs. They can't force people to sign contracts They can do a better job of not offering up a terrible team for those free agents to play for.

    Yeah, in a lot of ways it's like how poorly Hendry botched the OF situation in the early 00's which pretty much forced them to sign Soriano. It's not the missed signing that's the issue, it's the position where they have put the team. You can choose to cheat the prospect building game by tanking games, but you can't then hide from the fact that you have a crappy team as a result.

    There's not a single name on this list that you'd like to sign as a FA that you think will actually make it to FA next year? And even if that's true, it's good that the Cubs are still allowed to trade. He very clearly said "as attractive".

    Why would they even propose the project, then? I'm not saying I disagree with you (this whole matter is very confusing and there is a lot of information we aren't privy to), but why go to the length of rolling out these proposed renovations if the end goal is too drag your feet until the project is dead? It may have started with the foolish notion that they would have gotten money from the government. But it was also part of the storyline they are selling both season ticket holders and potential television partners. That story being that ownership is gung-ho about pouring money into this team at any moment, just as long as everything else lines up perfectly. They talked big about the construction from day one of their ownership and everybody covering the Cubs knew it needed massive overhaul. They sold Theo on a complete renovation that would mirror Fenway. The threat of a lawsuit is just not a justifiable reason not to begin months ago. Large projects take lots of time and plenty of lawsuits take place. When you have money and city approval, you start, then deal with problems as they come up. That is, unless you were never serious about spending the money.
