  1. I still don't buy this. Sure, there were people that didn't want to spend money on Pujols or Fielder or Darvish or Sanchez or Upton etc... But I think those were just individual evaluations on those players. I don't think there's ever really been a faction of this board that is dead set against spending on any big free agents. As to the rumored Tanaka money, I'm not thrilled about spending that much on a pitcher. But we've got an obvious hole at the top end of the rotation. We don't look to be able to fill that internally and I'd much rather spend money to fill it than give away potential superstar prospects. There's room in the payroll and there's nobody on the horizon who would appear to be a better target for the money. Back up the truck. While it would be cool to figure out a way to win without spending big on pitchers, I actually am thrilled about the idea of spending it on Tanaka. Because that's what teams with money do, and what teams without money wish they could do. The trajectory is already set. This is happening whether we like it or not. The money is insane. And if you want to play with the big boys you have to be willing to spend what we think are insane numbers (but are actually easily affordable figures for business with guaranteed future revenue streams).
  2. Hey Cubs, please win, but don't go crazy and spend lots of money on free agents.
  3. Injuries are part of my concern, sure. No matter the reason, the BoSox lost their ass on Matsuzaka. A total of 2 quality seasons for more than $102M spent. . Yeah, it really destroyed the organization and took them decades to recover. They didn't lose their ass. That's asinine. So $102M for 2 seasons is a great investment? It's not about whether the organization was ruined, it's about the return on their investment. They lost their ass because they didn't get a big enough return on a $102M investment. Also, don't ignore the second part of my post that stated it wouldn't bother me so much if I thought it wouldn't affect future spending by the Cubs. In the BoSox situation it didn't, they continued to spend money on big FAs even after the Dice-K deal. Do you think the Cubs, based on past practice, would do the same thing? I certainly don't. Losing your ass suggests losing your ass. They didn't lose their ass and it is asinine to suggest they did. Teams have ann ass load of money to spend and an incredibly small amount of talent to spend it on. That's just the facts. They aren't going out of business if they give somebody $150m and he isn't great.
  4. Somebody texted me "no new Wrigley for 9 years" based on some tweet of Buster Olney regarding buying out the rooftops. I assume this is a gross misinterpretation.
  5. Injuries are part of my concern, sure. No matter the reason, the BoSox lost their ass on Matsuzaka. A total of 2 quality seasons for more than $102M spent. It wouldn't worry me as much if I thought the Cubs would throw money at the problem if it didn't work out the way they hoped. But if he's a bust, I have the feeling the Cubs would allow it to hamper future negotiations. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my fear. And just for the record, I'd love for Tanaka to be a Cub no matter the cost. I'm just worried about what happens to the team as a whole and the approach going forward if Tanaka where to bomb. It's just an inherent risk when you sign a big FA, especially a pitcher. The Cubs are in the position where they need to spend to acquire someone like him. He's young, they desperately need starting pitching, they have money to spend, there's this rumored TV deal..it's all good. I agree with this. He's the proper guy to get. However, this board always thinks we should spend whatever it takes to get everybody. But I always try to point out that you can't have everybody, so you better be really happy with the one or two we eventually get. (I know about the Dodgers, we aren't them). So, when people wanted Albert Pujols, that's your ticket. You don't get him and three others the next three years. I really, really don't believe anybody would be happy with Albert and the remainder of his contract just a few years in. Well it sure is good that we have your lone voice of reason to temper our overzealous nature.

  7. Levine was on sirius mlb a little earlier and had some really distressing things to say about 2014 season. Things like, the focus being losing as many games as possible, I'm being facetious, they aren't really tanking, but they want one last high draft pick and will be looking for the #1 pick in the draft. Totally hemmed and hawed his way around the topic but was pretty clearly saying they are going to suck balls this year and are kind of happy about it. Although very positive on the Tanaka front (which directly confronts his other comments)
  8. If they worry about that were screwed.
  9. http://deadspin.com/onlookers-horrified-by-giant-testicle-1503688887 This happened to a kid on an opposing baseball team in high school. His teammates made the mistake of telling us before the game and we spent the rest of the game making fun of him.
  10. That's like classic CTL one-liner action right there.
  11. Just a hunch, but I'd wager that Levine knows a good looking young Asian man when he sees one. I see what you did there.
  12. poortomrickets broke his leg and needs somebody to cover his mortgage and car payments.
  13. You totally missed the point The point being that you are totally cool with the ownership for being unnecessarily cheap.
  14. I have my first first date in 13 years tonight, and I wish I didn't so I could just stay home and refresh for Tanaka news. This is far sexier. Sounds like you need to convert Chili's to Chili's-To-Go. top notch
  15. I was actually more excited for Bradley. *ducks* I realized that about myself and then didn't want to post it. :( I was pretty excited about both, but Bradley was more recent right? Both those guys were over 30 though, this is a whole new ballgame.
  16. But didn't he have a ton of help, including another tackle playing off his right side? The lack of actual sacks wasn't due to protection, it was due to scheme, help and Cutler clearing out. A ton? Britton only played on 22% of the snaps, and basically played a full game in the finale. Plus (again off the top of my head) I remember him playing a bunch on the left side to help Bushrod with especially strong pass rushers. Not saying Mills was great, even good. Hell, he was clearly below average based on the eye test, but no way he was the worst OT in football the way PFF ratings indicate. Well, that last part may be true. Those rankings are incredibly flawed for a variety of reasons. But I swear I saw Britton out there all the time. At the Philly game we were behind the end zone and I saw that dude's name all too often for a game with no protection.
  17. Bigger question is why was Sly Stallone there.

  19. But they'd take all the good players. The Cubs don't have any anyway. damn you
  20. But they'd take all the good players. Leaving the Cubs roster near the top of what remains.
