  1. It's not like southern teams have never seen rain. And 50 degrees is hardly bone chilling. It's still a game in the south against southern teams, at best it partially negated the disadvantage. Impressive win by Iowa. Although that gimmick offense isn't that hard to beat when you have time to study it. They rely on catching people off balance. I didn't get the fake field goal call. Why not just go for it on 4th down there? You put the ball in the hands of a guy who can't handle it and you run the risk of what happened, and what almost happened. Instead of GT getting the ball on the 3 worst case scenario, they get better field position and could have ran back a fumble for a TD. I would have liked to see a 3rd down run there, and then 4th down anything other than fake field goal.
  2. Really? It's hard to believe any Illinois fan would think Ron Turner was a great hire. I thought he was adequate, back when I thought the defense first strategy made sense. But in two decades of working including the QB strong Big Ten he's never produced a quality NFL quarterback.
  3. I like the USC guy but the more I think about it the more I think I'd prefer him to be the QB coach with somebody else as OC. I'm not afraid of a young guy calling plays, but I think it's important to have an OC and QB coach, and if this guy is so close with Cutler, I think it's important to also have somebody in there that can be all business, and not as much of a buddy with Cutler. Jay still has to improve, and he needs somebody to push him for that. I'd be afraid that Bates would all but owe Jay for his job, and be less interested in critiquing him when necessary.
  4. Playing from behind every game contributed. 2009 is not the only year Lovie has been head coach.
  5. Veal doesn't really fit in that group. He was a rule 5 pickup that shouldn't have been on a major league roster, not some castoff that another team gave up on.
  6. For it to work I think a guy would have to be in dead end place, like Buffalo or Oakland, and looking at a chance to work with Cutler as his big break. I'm not sure leaving Tennessee and Vince Young would be all that enticing, although their head coach may end up being in the same position as Lovie next year.
  7. I don't see how they lure a currently employed OC to be their OC.
  8. No chance.
  9. He's never just implied it, he's made it crystal clear what his preference is. He would run on every down if he could. And he's had plenty of talented RBs at his disposal, and the offense has always been disappointing.
  10. Its not Lovie's fault that he has a mediocre running back. If we had a Chris Johnson/Adrian Peterson type of player, would you have a problem with Lovie saying he wants to run the football? Especially coming off a year when we got away from the run, although after hearing the report about Forte's injury, it seems as if there could have been a legitimate reason for it. It absolutely is his fault that he insists on being a run first team without the personel to match a run first strategy and in a league when passing is by far the most important aspect of offense.
  11. now they emailed to say they signed Uribe
  12. You interpreted the Marinelli line differently than I did, and made a good point about how Lovie talks a lot but doesn't saying anything. I thought he try to avoid the question of whether Marinelli was offered the job, but that his last line indicated he did offer it and Marinelli turned it down. I didn't expect much out of this PC, but it was incredibly disappointing. It reaffirmed my belief that Lovie has to go and made me think that perhaps not just Lovie and Jerry, but also Phillips are on the hot seat next year. Given the widespread family board, I see Phillips as superflous. They need a football man as president, then let him determine GM/Coaching situation.
  13. What do you mean "assuming health". Sheets might be a better bet to give you 220 innings of great ball, and even at his best Harden may only give you 150 innings of better ball. But there's no assumptions with these guys' health other than it will always be in doubt.
  14. With a likely autonomous OC, it's entirely possible that they can bring in a guy that would be here longer than Lovie on that side of the ball. Teams keep coordinators all the time even as head coaches change. But I doubt the Bears pull it off.
  15. Almost all of them defensive coaches. Says something about the ability to work with Lovie Smith in the scheme he likes. I believe there is a crapload of evidence that he's just a stubborn dunce who cannot think creatively and will not tolerate any meandering from the hard and fast rule of his way or highway, the hell with results. The best coaches adapt strategy to the talent they have to work with, Lovie never has, and never will do that.
  16. Frustrated at what? I got the impression the writers were lobbing softballs his way. He gets pissed when people question him. It wasn't all softballs. They were asking about third down problems, repeated failures, the contradiction of needing change but keeping the scheme the same, questioning the value of maintaining a scheme that has failed repeatedly. He sounded angry toward the end, and the last words he spoke makes it sound like they offered Marinelli the DC job and he turned it down. "Rod wants to remain in his current position as the assistant head coach, helping me with stuff like that, and coaching the defensive line. That's a full-time job."
  17. Lovie is getting frustrated, almost angry. [expletive] you Lovie. I'm more convinced than ever that you need to go.
  18. Is all your information a day old?
  19. And this pansy writers didn't even call him on it. What a moron.
  20. "I think you should play the way you want to win." That right there is the problem. Lovie is far more interested in winning his way than just winning. You have to throw the motherfucking ball all over the motherfucking field to win. That's what you have to do now. The fact that you don't want to win that way doesn't mean a god damn thing. "How many years have we had a problem on third down, just one, this past year". Wrong [expletive].
  21. The only justification would be if they were waiting to see if some other coaches would become available (Fewell).
  22. Referring to defensive scheme here? Yes, referring to defensive scheme, then said, "as far as offensive scheme, you know my feeling about running the ball, we still want to run the ball, but I'm open."
  23. everyday I've had a job I've worked like its the last day on that job. I don't know about you guys, but everybody I know mails in their last couple weeks, and sometimes don't even show up on the last day.
  24. questions about scheme same scheme when we made super bowl, we've been running the same scheme it can be succesful, this year in the playoffs (huh, playoffs haven't started yet). Open offensively, still want to be able to run the football (shut up you freaking moron running is for suckers and neanderthals).
  25. Referred to coaching changes as "changes I made today".
