    NBA is loaded with freakily physical guys. You just can't put the type of muscle those guys put on 7' frames. Nobody can say that it's impossible for Dwight Howard to have messed around. Aside from the injury recovery, which in itself is a performance enhancer, much of the good stuff doesn't bulk you up, it helps you get ripped. The other thing about willful ignorance that bothers me is that everybody started acting as though nobody even heard of steroids before the Balco story. It's a ridiculous notion. I vividly remember talk of steroids in the 80's and all the warnings about staying away or your balls would shrivel. There were numerous high school kids rumored and/or known to be on them, and calls to test high school athletes all the times, and check lockers for drugs, yet somehow the elite sports media had no idea?

    It's kind of interesting that something like that is discussed, but it's also kind of meaningless. So they agree to spend more as they lead up to the new stadium opening, I'd bet they were going to do that anyway. And despite concerns that they weren't trying, they performed almost exactly in-line with the ever expanding payroll Cubs the last seven years, not that this has ever been discussed before.

    Rothschild took heat when he sat back and let Dusty treat some guys recklessly, but given the fact that pitching has been the only consistently positive aspect of this team for the pact decade, Rothschild has been given credit. It's the hitting that has disappointed. The one thing he hasn't done is turn nobodies into studs, like Duncan. His specialty has been getting more out of guys with tremendous stuff but shaky performance. Dusty was going to use guys recklessly no matter what Larry said. Baker was his boss and had the final say. I don't blame Rothschild one bit for how Dusty treated the pitching staff. Congratulations, but the point was that Larry has been getting credit for a while now, and there's no need to worry about when he will finally get that credit.

NFL coaches have two categories. 1. Head Coach, 2. Assistant coaches. http://www.insidefootball.com/antitamperingpolicy.pdf That just means they aren't obligated to let him talk to them and go for nothing. But if he wants out and wants the job, it can happen, with repercussions.

    That might be a good idea, but I doubt Jerry and Lovie would be up for it. This is their job saving move.

    Sometimes this sort of move is followed up with a promotion for that coach, like when Rod Marinelli became assistant head coach after Tampa wouldn't allow the Bears to talk to him. In this case, that would be tough, as they already have an asst head coach/inside linebackers coach, and they have an offensive coordinator in between Clements and McCarthy. So they could offer this guy Asst HC role and more of a role in the offense, but then you run the risk of alienating the OC.

    That's all well and good, but it likely doesn't amount to much if he's LeBron's #1 target, too. I really think Bosh is the Bulls' best option this offseason.     But the point is he can't negotiate or interview without the risk of being in violation of that contract, so he'd almost certainly have to be assured of the job before getting too involved, which I believe would be far too difficult when it's a HC and GM whose jobs are on the line and want to be sure they are getting the right guy. A guy like Parcells can get away with it because everybody knows what they bring to the table. A QB coach getting a promotion to OC without actually having a well known track record is a tricky situation. GB denying permission does, in effect, end his candidacy. If this was a position coach that the GM worked with before, and everybody was familiar with, it would only be a formality they could easily get around with some sort of buyout. But in this case, it has an impact.

    If I remember correctly they brought him to AAA to avoid another conflict with the AA pitching coach, which is where the issue arose. Maybe it depends in part on where that pitching coach is now.

    Eh...I think the Packers did a disservice to him to not at least let him interivew for the job and the opportunity to turn the job down himself. Nothing like having someone else speak for you. But, I understand why the Packers did it. It has nothing to do with speaking for you. He is under contract. They aren't saying he's not interested, they are saying, we aren't interested in letting you take our guy. That's why they have contracts. The coaches want security for seasons at a time, and in return the teams get stability. but coaches can choose to work wherever they want, though. Not without repercussion while under contract.

    What? What does Maddux working in the front office have to do with Sheets returning to form? How does Maddux, in any way shape or form, improve Sheets' chances. The Cubs more or less have to do this, or something similar, to get back to last year's level of performance.

    My goal last year was to get Mark Sanchez and Shonn Greene for the Jets. Unlike them I didn't have to trade up to get the QB, but I waited too long on Greene thinking he'd be there in the 3rd, where he actually did go to the Jets, but was taken a few picks sooner here. I think I took a receiver in the 2nd, which the Jets could probably use this year.

    That's true, but who has he had at QB? Warner, Bulger? Both pocket passers and less mobile than Cutler. My bigger concern is whether he can get Cutler out of the pocket and/or running some bootlegs to his right. That's where he's at his best and Turner didn't utilize that strength. Even more troubling if he didn't do his best to get the statues the protection they needed. Considering they had success with him, I believe he did give them the protection they needed. Maybe not what they wanted, but certainly what they needed.

    My guess is it would have something to do with the players union. Or maybe a statute of limitations regarding laws he may have broken to get these steroids? I have no idea. Regardless, it's good to see Big Mac come clean, even if isn't surprising in the least. It's probably more to do with a foolish belief that denial would still work and keep his image cleaner than finally admitting it.

    How about the more beaches/more babes option? That would hold if they were in Miami instead of Tampa. Coked up supermodels > Meth addicted high school drop outs. It's not Tampa though, it's Naples, so isn't more like washed up cougars? And while Arizona lacks beaches, I don't think it lacks in the babes department.

    Curious place for a recently retired player to begin his career. Special assistants to the GM seem like pointless positions given to legends, or ways to hide fired GMs. I like the idea of Maddux being involved, but I always doubt the coaching or scouting abilities of a great player, and this seems like it could easily just be a marketing gimmick for new owners to reach out to somebody the crowd loved.

    and probably my favorite in light of what I had heard from a lot of the national media before the game... I think it's fairly riduculous that he asserts Romo just decided to prove people wrong. And it's still only the wild card round, and blowout games. He's not going to disprove the critics until he does it in a tight playoff game and/or makes it deep into the playoffs. Manning had the same critics until he actually won a super bowl.

    I question that reputation. He worked with John Elway in college 30 years ago, and got a couple decent seasons out of Kerry Collins in NY, but is that really impressive? He was in Denver after Elway was already an established star, and before they enjoyed the Shanahan years of success. He spent an unimpressive season in Arizona, another unimpressive year in Oakland and most recently a couple of really bad years with Baltimore. He's got a reputation, but what is it based on? His first coaching gig as an assistant during Elway's college years?

    I'll probably just go ahead and start one up here pretty soon (probably this evening). Going by last year, I think the interest will be there, and I enjoy doing it. Especially with this draft, where so many teams could go in so many directions. It seems a little early, but maybe that's just me not caring as much about the draft since Chicago won't be participating. I'd be happy to play along, and select for the Jets.
