I see no reason why a Forte Thomas backfield couldn't be 40/60, but who cares about such specifics. Thomas clearly brings more to the table because Matt Forte isn't good. He's not a weapon, he's a body. I have serious doubts about their ability to get all those needs and the last thing this team needs is just a body at WR. Unless you get a really good one, there is no use for another one. They have 5-6 draft picks, and can sign 2-4 FA, I don't see how a RB can't be on that list, considering the one they have is way down the list and makes no money. The offensive line is probably the only place that can be improved by just throwing bodies there, and they aren't getting any significant upgrades at tackle or end.

Sometimes my bed hits me so hard when I'm asleep that I can barely move my arm when I wake up. It must be an SEC bed. That is freaky, I had the worst instance of dead arm when waking up the other morning.

I didn't saying anything about lesser backs, I was talking about a superior runner like Thomas. Get a guy who can actually do something with the ball in his hands, but who may not be capable of running 20 times a game, and team him with Forte, whose main strength is that he can carry it 25 times a game, and you might have something back there. If you are waiting until the 7th round, I'd fear you are getting very little. If you sign a couple quality lineman and can't afford such a player, fine, but I think they have plenty of room in their cap structure to fit in a back with superior talent than Forte. I might prefer a Brandon Marshall type receiver, but I think an impact WR is going to be much harder to acquire than a complimentary RB who can take half of Forte's carries.

I thought the CBA issue was going to mean unrestricted FA becoming restricted, not more guys becoming unrestricted.

None. They moved a guy from PR, or media relations or something to some stats position, and it was around this time that press releases about acquisitions started saying things like "he hit .300 in day games on the road" or "had hit .350 with men on base last year" and nonsense like that. It wasn't until a couple years ago that they admitted to finally "looking at things like OBP", as simple a stat as that is. Hendry and the guys who have his ear have been openly hostile to the concept of objective analysis and are pretty much the polar opposite of what anybody would consider an advanced metrics oriented team. -
That's a stunner since he's only been there a year. He's been there longer, he's just been head coach for only one season.

The passing game matters most, obviously, but I thik the talent at WR is clearly much better than RB. And I initially mentioned I think they might need to spend more than a 7th rounder on a RB. I didn't even know Thomas was a pending free agent. But the fact is the Bears need talent upgrade at RB. They have limited draft picks and are not in a bad financial/cap situating. I doubt Thomas gets star free agent RB money, as he's not that big of a name. People keep talking about the fictional great offensive line options, but I dont' see many, and I don't see why they can't upgrade both OL and RB.

I saw parts of the Atlanta game on NHL network last night and oh man was that an empty building. Ouch.

Which is why I think they won't suffer that much. The concern is replacing depth with depth, they don't need any stars anywhere.

Forte isn't good. He's barely adequate. I overrated him last year probably based on the fact that he was a good fantasy RB, but he wasn't a good RB. No team should have one primary back unless that guy is great, and Forte doesn't run the ball well enough to deserve the role he has. The line plays a part, but Forte should have never been a 300 rushes guy, and he shouldn't be a 250 guy either. There's no reason why he and a guy like Thomas can't split with 150 each. Forte has no burst speed or moves. The Bears have no quality RB depth. I can't imagine why somebody would have a problem taking carries away from him or trying to get better depth at a position they suck at and get very little from. Money is not an issue as Forte is signed for nothing for 2 more years.

Is anybody acting that way? I thought the whole point was he was a talented yet inexperienced freshmen who was pressed into action too early, ultimately fell short but should have a nice career. Yes, go back and read the thread. Someone said "this is the best backup QB the biggest team in the homeland of football can get?" (not an exact quote). So, while not everyone is acting that way, some certainly are. Well that person isn't very bright, they aren't an NFL team. College backups are almost always young and inexperienced. Good experienced backups transfer.

It's unlikely but your reasoning is ridiculous. He did not get more carries as the year has gone on, he got less. In 2008 he got more and more, in 2009 he got less and less. He is nothing like Pujols and the chances of the Bears getting him are much, much better. New Orleans has offensive skill position players all over the place, and multiple backs that can produce, and they have not come close to featuring Thomas. The Bears have Forte, but they aren't exactly in love with the guy, and they aren't financially committed to him as the everydown back. He's got 2 years left on his deal and he makes peanuts. They have relatively little money dedicated to offensive skill positions, and have shown a willingness to spend on free agents, even if they avoid the biggest guys. They could probably offer him a contract that could get it done.

I find it odd that Kaplan claims to have been against just about every deal the Cubs/Blackhawks/Bears have made, and a lot of people accuse me of the same, and yet we have basically the opposite opinion, or at least very different ones on almost everybody he discusses. He was always against Cutler, I was ecstatic about getting him, he was always against Bradley, I was intrigued by the acquisition, he was ecstatic when they got rid of him, I was pissed they gave him away.

So I noticed a lot of people making fun of Saban not enjoying the gatorade bath, but nobody mentioning that that was one of the most "violent" gatorade dumps I've seen. They didn't just pour it on him, they ran at him and may have even hit his head/neck/shoulder with the cooler itself. I wouldn't have enjoyed that. This isn't to dismiss the notion that Saban is a jerk. But it seems to me that the players may have been taking some liberties with an aggressive dump knowing it's the only time they'd get away with doing something to him.

The answer is very simple, baseball is already huge in both countries. Forcing a series between the two (when I believe their seasons don't even matchup timewise) does nothing to grow the game globally. If you want to do that, have other Asians leagues play each other, try to get teams in Europe, or deeper into South America and the Asia Pacific region. If the Yankees played the Yomiuri Giants in November, where would that have been played, first off, and how would that grow world wide interest in the game?

I doubt that. They could easily fall from the top spot, where they are now, but middle of the pack? Their core is still very young with huge upside. And while Hossa might be a problem in 5 years, he easily earns his cap hit. They have two problem contracts, Campbell and Huet. Huet's is more or less meaningless as he doesn't have much time left on it and they can replace him internally. And Campbell isn't exactly useless, and there are options for getting rid of him. It's one thing to be up against cap trouble when you're a team like the Redskins who isn't good in the first place. Or in hockey, you have the Rangers who spent a crapload on non-elite free agents and didn't develop much of anything internally. But when you are great, and young, you can live tight to the cap and stay in contention for a while.

My new favorite stupid David Kaplan thing is his insistence on labelling certain losses this year solely on Cutler and insinuating the team could have or should have been a 10 or 11 win team without Cutler. It's incredibly stupid reasoning. First off, Chicago doesn't even compete with Minnesota in that one win without him, they might not have beaten Detroit the 2nd time without him, they wouldn't have been in the 2nd GB game without him (and that was a loss he pinned on Jay) and they probably lose to both Pittsburgh and Seattle without Cutler. There's no way you can assume the Bears would have been better this year with Orton. Kyle went to a much better offensive system (players and coaches) and played with a significantly better defense and won one more game in Denver than Jay did in Chicago. Orton had a nice season in Denver, but he would not have had that season with the Bears. There's no doubt that Cutler played a significant roll in multiple losses, but you can't just take him off the team and assume 4 more wins.

To what benefit? Who cares about international competition? Do we really need to stir up rivalries with japan and Cuba?

Forte was an okay college back who was far from an elite prospect coming out, and he had a lot of wear getting a ton of carries on turf. Then in his rookie year he took more wear and tear than most RBs ever take, and he wasn't that good. He couldn't run the ball well in 2008 and he was worse in 2009. The line isn't any help, but he isn't any good.
