  1. Is there anything other than speculation in regard to this? I haven't heard anything about the Comcast SportsNet contract going away any time soon. There's no concrete plan in place, at least in public, but it's widely assumed the Cubs have a boatload of money coming toward them in the next deal.
  2. Horrible seems too far, but it certainly isn't good. A tick below what ARod got, and he plays a less taxing position without DH competition. he also plays a way less valuable position and arod's contract is pretty [expletive] brutal Arod hasn't played 140 games in a year since he signed the extention, so yeah, it's rough. And that was with DH already theoretically available to him for rest. Playing a less valuable position is beneficial to Pujols going forward since it's also less taxing. But the point is they are both rich organizations that can afford to overpay for greatness.
  3. Who is they? Cardinals. They already signed Pujols's replacement before he even left. The only reason they even considered going so high was because of what Albert meant there. Fielder doesn't mean anything to them and won't soothe the fans.
  4. Horrible seems too far, but it certainly isn't good. A tick below what ARod got, and he plays a less taxing position without DH competition. He also won't be hated by 75% of the team's fans. They will get runs at 500 and 600 HR milestones and the potential for even bigger targets. The 2nd biggest market in baseball while still being an organization with a whole lot of upside. I don't think it's that bad at all.
  5. Will this push NL teams further toward going with DH?
  6. Exactly. People wondering what would keep a mystery team quiet.
  7. There is a difference between them speculating and throwing [expletive] against the wall, like what Rogers did above, and actually reporting that something is happening. Words like "would likely be" "should" "might" are good indicators. In general, there's been all sorts of nonsense about how it doesn't make sense for the Cubs to get a stud 1B, or how the Cubs can't afford a stud 1B, or the Cubs have no business even thinking about a stud 1B. When somebody bases their speculation about how the Cubs aren't in on a stud 1B with these theories, that is dumb.
  8. I've done it quite a bit and had no problem.
  9. If I was a Marlins fan I really have a hard time imagining that I would be mad at all.
  10. I would think 15-20 from the time they turn 18. It's not reasonable to expect a 12 year old victim to press charges by the time he's 25, or whatever the hell needed to happen to make this stick. So effectively 25+ years from any alleged incident? I know it sounds good here. Any time there's a crime, the SOL seems like it should extend to whenever a charge is brought. But 25 years is a long time for witnesses to remember stuff and evidence to sit around. You aren't talking about any old crime. Raping a kid who stands very little chance of testifying against his abuser any sooner demands a longer period of time.

  12. its insane. survivors of this type of abuse should be allowed to take their damn time with coming forward. putting limitations on it is asinine and byzantine. it protects molesters due to the extreme stress the abuse puts on the victims. it's tough because you also have the oprah "repressed memories" crowd, psychologists with theories that are highly specious and then very suggestable people with wild imaginations. being wrongly accused of something like that is nearly as bad as the actual criminal act itself. Yes, that can be an issue. But a statute of limitations of 5 years (or whatever ridiculously short number this was) is a gross overreaction to such concern.
  13. No. He played some CF in Cleveland and apparently that hurt some of his numbers. I'd like to see somebody justify his numbers being bad.
  14. I'd guess either offseason between 2013-14 or by the deadline in 14. I think it will be a very challenging trade market for a 30-something middle infielder with that much guaranteed money left and likely even more injuries on his resume.
  15. http://deadspin.com/5865932/the-case-against-bernie-fine-is-falling-apart Doesn't look like Fine will face charges. I really have to question the rationale behind statutes of limitation for sexual abuse of minors.
  16. I think it does less than with the other two, but you've got a giant field, usually with grass and outdoors, and all sorts of bang bang plays that can be seen so much clearer with a quality HD broadcast. Basketball's relatively small controlled environment doesn't really seem to benefit to the same extent. For me, the best part is seeing those bang bang plays, especially in slow motion. I remember the days when, at times, slow motion made it harder to tell which way the call should go because it was so blurry. That goes along with all of the traps, foul/fair calls, did the ball hit above or below the line etc. With HD, there's not much question left anymore. Well yea...that's all about the picture quality/resolution and less about the aspect ratio. Which is why I wish we could have all the old sports highlights at that type of resolution. What's important in all of this is that in 10 years I would be ecstatic to look back at all the high quality HD video of Pujols in a Cubs uniform, regardless of how that 10th year played out.
  17. I don't see them breaking it down by which team he was with, BR.com does have that broken out and it looks like the flukish (and ridiculous) negative fielding rating all occured with the Indians. Dejesus isn't any better than what Fukudome was with the Cubs. Colvin was the one who sucked balls out there for the Cubs.

  19. Colvin sucked balls, Fukudome wasn't any worse than you could expect Dejesus to be. ?? I'd expect DeJesus (2.2 WAR) to do what he did last year and Fukudome (-.2 WAR) was way worse than that. A 2.4 WAR difference between the two is significant. I see Fukudome doing much better than that with the Cubs last year.
  20. We've got HD now so any video of Pujols should hold up really well over time. I really wish the Jordan era had happened about 10 years later. Or that TV had been 10-15 years ahead of its time. I think the recent improvements in HD and television in general do a hell of a lot more for hockey, football and baseball than they do for basketball. What do you really think it adds to NBA?

  23. This is so weird...why would the Cubs even be bothering being involved when they're almost surely not going to match those years. And it's not like they can drive the bidding up any higher than the Marlins already have. Who knows where the actual figures for those deals are? It's not like the media pegs it exactly every time.
