The weird part is that you apparently don't even know what the "pissing match" was about. I never disagreed with WR, OL, and CB early. I just said that I'd take DE over LB and possibly would take DE in the 1st round. Then I said, if the Bears sign a DE (like Avril)....I would still pick DE early (and AHEAD OF LB) but would not take DE in the 1st round. If they sign a de then I would definitely look lb before de in draft. Although bpa obviously leaves that up in air -

I think it's up to the Japanese team to accept a serious bid. An MLB team that does not negotiate in good faith will also damage its reputation. -
Both have pitched for 3 seasons, although Wells' injury last year gives Cahill an edge in IP(583 to 500). Otherwise? 4.01 ERA, 105 ERA+, 1.34 WHIP, 6.0 K/9, 2.9 BB/9, 1.0 HR/9, 4.24 FIP, 4.17 xFIP, .266/.325/.401/.726 line against 3.91 ERA, 107 ERA+, 1.32 WHIP, 5.5 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 1.0 HR/9, 4.51 FIP, 4.23 xFIP, .253/.323/.399/.723 line against I mean, how could they be any more similar? By not having a huge age difference or Randy wells sucking balls last year?

I think other people's eyes were actually scouting him, but they were talking about trying to explain why a decent player had a bad year, not whether or not somebody is actually good.

Wouldn't the more accurate comparison be whoever got protected instead of Flaherty? who got protected instead of Flaherty? I thought they had multiple open spots. Caught me before the edit/delete. Maybe I'm alone on this, but I pictured that as "stathead who doesn't mind listening to scouts on low-minors prospects" and such. It's turned out to be more like "scout who applies scientific rigor to scouting and also respects the results of sabermetrics." I disagree strongly with that. Epstein isn't a scout who respects numbers.

I actually think that the way things are going it is inevitable that the NL will adopt the DH, eventually. But unless there's been a lot more internal talk that those guys are away of, it's not really something you can count on happening with the timeframe of a contract signed this year.

The longer Epstein and Co. have been here, the more intriguing this sort of thing becomes. This isn't the (heavily exaggerated by Michael Lewis) mythical Moneyball Billy Beane. This is a much smarter version of Andy MacPhail and Jim Hendry. Presumably, the extra intelligence will make all the difference. But their emphasis on scouting at the MLB level appears to be a lot bigger than (at least I) assumed. Everything about Epstein was about better utilizing the information he received, and he always clearly placed a heavy emphasis on scouting. He was the sabr conscious GM who didn't piss off all the old school scouts.

Soriano didn't teach anybody anything about Fielder. The two situations are nothing similar. Soriano was barely even arbitration eligible when he was Fielder's age right now. Soriano signed when he already passed through most of his prime and had a glaringly obvious fatal flaw that was easily exploited, and no position in the field. Even with all his obvious flaws, if you signed Soriano to his contract at age 27 instead of going into his age 31 season, you wouldn't have been hurt but what he eventually did during that time frame. Soriano wasn't a star, and he was too old for that deal when he signed it, not to mention a hacker. Fielder is going to give you plenty of primetime production after already having consistently produced through his early-to-mid 20's. And another thing to remember is that if the Cubs can easily fit a free agent like him into the system this year, with not only Soriano's contract but the team just waiting to get Dempster and Zambrano off the books, they will be able to easily eat any sub-standard production 5-6 years from now. The goal is not to get through the next 10 years with the most cost effective roster possible. The goal is to be the best team you can every year.

I had 2 targets, Pujols and Fielder, with moderate interest in Wilson. The truth of the matter is that two potential targets that will be hard to replace are gone. Pujols and Wilson. That's it. And we never had a shot if Wilson was that intent on going home. We were never in on Reyes, Papelbon, Bell, etc... (nor should we have been). And lamenting the loss of a player like Buehrle would be silly considering how many comparable or better pitchers there are on the market. If you want to go crazy because we didn't get Pujols, fine. That's well within your rights. But don't pretend our entire offseason is over. Most of the guys we were in on are still out there. Hence, early. This is a ridiculous post. I said it's not early and so far they haven't done anything but small market moves. Stop trying to pretend that anybody who expresses disappointment in the current condition of the team is an unreasonable moron freaking out. Don't pretend I said our entire offseason is over. It's no longer early, and our options are smaller now. They can and should pay for the impact players that are available.

Yeah, because those are out there all the time. Teams aren't willing to trade players they don't want to pay bigger arbitration dollars to? We've seen mentions of Shields, Upton, Nolasco, Danks, Floyd, Gio Gonzalez, even Joey Votto possibly being on the trade market. So you think it makes sense to actually trade away what little top talent we have in the minors to get such a theoretical Garza instead of just signing a freaking free agent that costs nothing but money? One of those things takes away from the building the system gameplan, and it's not signing free agents. Theoretical trades are a hell of a lot harder, and much less likely to happen than just signing a guy you can afford and do need.

Yeah, there's no reason to go ballistic, but it's not early. We are between 25% to 33% of the way through the offseason. The vast majority of moves that will be made this offseason have not been made yet. That makes it early. It's not a linear timeline. We're past the GM and winter meetings. All but one of the top 6 or 7 free agents are gone. It's not early.

That is ridiculous. Why are people so freaking afraid? Did Soriano scare you that much? We're just past the midpoint of that bad contract and the team already has plenty of flexibility. Big contracts to big time players will not cripple a big market team.

There was probably enough excitement over the overhaul to drive ticket sales this February without a huge improvement to the team.

The Madoff Mets are cutting payroll by like $30m so I hope that doesn't happen. Now they're just the Mets. When they were the Madoff Mets they were spending some major coin. They were basically right there with the Cubs. -
A big market team that is in on talks for big market moves but only makes small market moves is operating in small market mode until they actually make a big market move. The Yankees and Red Sox are in small market mode. That's idiotic. They have much higher payrolls and much better teams and are in much better position than the Cubs going into 2012.

You can't make that claim until you know what they're planning, which you don't. If the moves thus far have been made with Darvish and Fielder in mind, they weren't really operating in small market mode. A small/mid-market team doesn't even inquire on Pujols, Wilson, etc. Miami did. They don't get to just plan, and then have that plan work perfectly. In a market with extremely limited resources, you either acquire them or you don't, it doesn't matter if you planned on it.
