  1. Yeah, he pitched at under 4.0 ERA 2 years ago. Is it crazy to think he can do it again?
  2. yeah, sure. I told you didnt I! (:sigh:, the heartache an optomistic cubs fan has to endure here) :D
  3. Sorry, the extrrrrrreeeeeme pessimism gets to me sometimes. It almost seems like people are going out of their way to make sure to be as mad and dissapointed as possible. To say we have an ace and 4 #5's, that's just crazy.
  4. A little pessamistic aren't we? I think he is stating the facts. Lilly + Marquis = 17+ Million. Why not just overpay for Zito with that $$$? Zambrano + Zito is a pretty good 1-2 punch. You don't have to turn your head far to find pessimism on this board. That's fine you say that, all I gotta do is twitch my head to see someone else say Zito will suck at Wrigely since he's such a flyball pitcher. BTW, you are not arguing his case. He said an ace and 4, #5's. Which is absolutely ridiculous. Hill has the potential to be a bonified #2, probably an ace in a couple of years. Miller is already a solid #4 by the way he was already pitching TWO MONTHS ago, while still rehabbing. Lilly is atleast a #4, and Marquis could also be a #4, #3. I'm no stat guru, but I THINK the average for "number 5 pitchers" ERA was probably just above 5.0. Last time I checked Marquis and Lily have carreer ERA's close to 4.5. I know alot of us love to be pessamistic about EVERYTHING cubs. But statements like that are absolutely silly. A #1 and 4 #5's. Please.
  5. Sorry, but hill is a POTENTIAL ace. He is a #3, not a POTENTIAL #3.
  6. THANK YOU! Finally another optomistic post to read. I feel the same way you do Primetime. It's exciting to see all these new faces. And I am going to put my trust in JH and Rothschild and Mcdunnough this off-season. I am going to assume Larry really is that good, and that he is confident he can help Marquis. That would be great if he pitched well, and stick it to the cardinals. .
  7. I don't agree with that, but we are all entiled to our opinions. Because Wade Miller made several starts at the end of the season, and did QUITE GOOD, even with lower velocity. For that, I beleive he showed he was actually rehabbing, and getting better. Therefore I think he will make a good amount of starts next year. I really look foward to him contributing in some way. I also disagree that our offense won't be great. For 1 derrek Lee will be back, Aram is entering his prime, and we now have 3 big bats, not just 2.
  8. Marmol/Marshall/Guzman. Marmol because I listened to guys like Brenley who was very impressed by Marmol. He seems to have enough pitches to be a starter, and haven't many people here compared him to Zambrano? As alot of people saw Zambrano as a reliever at first, and look at him now. Marshall is very young, and already has that "poise" on the mound. And he's got very good control, and good stuff. Guzman still can't seem to find his control. So until he actually shows something, and has many great games in a row, I rate him low. .
  9. Yes, it was Bruce who said that. Rothschild wasn't Dusty's boy in the first place; Dick Pole was. Rothschild was forced on Dusty because he was already here with a multi-year contract. My suspicion is that Rothschild was pitching coach in name, but Dusty listened to Pole. I'm willing to give Larry a little benefit of the doubt and give him a chance to prove himself under Piniella. As am I. I trust what Bruce says, so now LR will get a great chance under his good Friend Piniella who he's worked with in the past. To prove if he is really good.
  10. Here's what I'd like, and what I think could be likely. . Keep jaque for CF, Sign Suppan to stabalize the rotation. use rookies like theroit/moore types to fill out the bench.
  11. Boy, I sure hope so. I'm still nervous though - probably just because it's the Cubs. The last 8-10 games Hill pitched. He looked like an Ace. He pitched with utter DOMINANCE and he had a look of such confidence. That's all he needed. He does have the #'s in the minors to show for his talent, doesn't he? And anyway, just look at the pitchers that have come out of the Cubs system. Zambrano, Prior and Wood got injured, but it just shows you we have great pitching. And I think there are more to come. We've just gotta keep these guys healthy, and not overwork them. I trust Piniella to do that.
  12. You forgot one big one. HILL all year >>>>>>>>>> bad hill half year, and not a full year either. And there's all sorts of things that could happen. Theroit could step up and produce and replace izturis, Derosa COULD have figured out his swing and be an above average 2B, Miller could supprise alot of people, Wood could be a lights out releiver. Pie could light up ST and make an impact, one of the "rookies" could step up arise to stardom. The Cubs certainly have alot of good future pitching in their system. Some of them whom could be very close. And I think the offense is now good enough , and the rotation much more stable compared to last year, to support an experement for a short time.
  13. I guarantee you, if Theroit proves he can outperform Izturis significantly offensively, he will get alot of playtime at SS.
  14. I hope they don't trade Jaque Jones. I also hope his team-mates can convince him to give chicago another chance. It would be hard for ANY player to have a good time as a 06 chicago cub. It was just a pitiful year. I hope Jones stays, because he is a decent #5 hitter, and gives us some extra pop that we need after Soriano, Lee, and Aram.
  15. Not I. I have always been neutral on any player, or any manager. I thought Lou was a good option, but prefered girardi. But now that he has spoke alot in chicago media, I like his style. I think he'll be a good manager.
  16. There are actually two positions left. CF and SS. Don't forget 2B... Mark DeRosa? Like he said, 2B... Like HE said, Mark Derosa.
  17. How fitting that the "Sausage King of Chicago" knows all about cardiac procedures... "It's ok, he's just having a little heart attack." - Superfan (Chris Farley) :pounds chest: DYA! HHhhYA! MMYA!! (not funny, sorry). .
  18. I don't personally think it's a transaction. So I'm with ya.
  19. IBL? yep. IBL.
  20. If he plays for the Cards, more opportunity for Zambrano to knock something off.
  21. Yeah it's not like going into 2004, when we had 4 very good, healthy, young starting pitchers, a solid lineup and a good closer. We could be certain of success that year. we were as certain of success as anybody's been in a while. the fact that it didn't happen to work out is irrelevant. if you could have that situation again, you'd be a fool to turn it down. my point was that it's the cubs, the only thing you can be certain of is that there won't be success No thanks. I wouldn't care to repeat that year, going back to having a coaching staff that doesn't WORK, and a manager that doesn't MANAGE. I'll take Piniella and THIS group of guys, thank you.
  22. He's got spunk, I suppose that's something. What pitchers don't have shoulder problems. Most pitch through them. Did you hear that PRIOR!!!! You're right. Just thought I would point out the trend. The fact that he beat the crap out of his manager after his desire was questioned is also interesting 8-) Here's one for ya. Stiff back Stiff neck back pain side pain stiff back stiff back. Can you guuuuuueeeees who that is? Do you want him in your rotation?
  23. Look at Suppan's innings over the past eight years and the rest of his stats over the past four seasons. He's been the model of consistency and is not at all the gamble the other SP's have been thus far. With Suppan you know what you're getting: ~190 IP ~110K ~60 BB ~4.00 ERA 31-32 Starts ~14 wins With the Cubs, you don't know that last one to be true. Also remember that he was with the Cards. Figure in the extra year of age and the change of scenery to the northside, and standard metrics project his numbers with the Cubs in '07 to be along the lines of: ~75 IP ~35K ~60BB ~6.35 ERA ~17 starts ~5 wins ~2.5 months on the DL So you're just going to throw numbers around arbitrarily? Those are based on absolutely nothing. All of the sudden his bb/K ratio is going to flip flop? Standard metrics couldn't possibly be more wrong if this is the case. So based on this theory, or metric, would Carlos Zambrano be a 30-game winner if he joined the cards? Would he then strike out 300 hitters because he was a cardinal? Would he be twice the horse and throw more innings (300?) while staying even more healthy? Um, I'm pretty sure he was just joking. A joke. Is a story with a humorous climax? >:|
