  1. That's the worst idea I've ever heard in my life. Maybe so, but I know 15 NSBB'ers I'd give it to yesterday off the top of my head. Would you pay for the postage with your injury settlement? Good things can happen in this world. Look at me!
  2. Love it. Or trade Hendry for a bucket of KFC. Hendry would eat the bucket of KFC before it got to Chicago, so bad idea. Maybe tofu?
  3. Assuming Wood makes his next 3 starts? As unlikely as it is that Wood makes his next 3 starts, I think it's even less likely that Rusch remains in the rotation for 3 starts.

    And Redick
  5. I told you so: Rich Hill was going to suck. Kerry Wood was going to have more drama after his 1st start. Hendry ultimately wasn't going to find a suitor for Todd Walker The Cubs overpaying for a bullpen really wasn't that bad at all, and in fact the pen is now the best facet of the team (last night notwithstanding)
  6. I personally go back to 2002 where we didn't dump Alou to make room for Vlad. Same thing (as you say) in 2003 with Tejada and in 2004 with Beltran. They have done that sort of thing for years. The last time they bit their lip and signed the best and most predictably proficient FA on the mkt was Dawson in freakin' 87'. Recently could have had indisputable upgrades like Guerrero, Tejada, Hampton (he was really good back then but lost it at Coors), Thome, to name a few. EDIT: Instead ofthose guys, we get people like Kal Daniels, Danny Jackson, HRod, Dave Smith, Goose Gossage at age 42, Jacque, Luis Gonzalez (pre HR outburst; I won't speculate as to the cause), Blauser...the freakin list goes on and on. The only reason they got Dawson in 1987 was because he gave them a blank contract already signed and told them to pay him whatever, because he wanted to be here that badly.

I really thought we would get #1 after Portland got hosed with the 4th pick. But I doubt that whoever it is the Bulls want will be selected by Toronto - I see them picking Bargnani or maybe even Morrison.
  8. Who should have been starting instead of Hill and Guzman? I've seen the stat that the Cubs have gone 1-15 in the "#5 starter position" ... but I honestly don't know how that #5 position was computed. I think the 1 win was Rusch vs. the Pirates. ETA: to change the verb tense re who should have been starting They should have traded some of the kids for a starter or signed someone. This would have been real unpopular tho, and the Cubs would have been criticized for wasting money or never giving the kids a chance. I'm basically taking the often heard "give the kids a chance" theory to task. The Cubs can't do the things Oakland and Atlanta can cause they don't draft well. Your last point is one that will get little to no argument. This was debated often last year when Baker kept going to the vets instead of the kids, and was one of the things I was hoping to elicit some discussion on. The Cubs farm system just can't be depended on. I think Guzman will turn out to be good, but I'm losing faith in Murton & Cedeno. Hill might be good on a small market team... I am a little worried about Guz. Hill is not going to do anything with only one decent pitch. Murt will be fine when Hendry fires all the staff (and at some point he'll HAVE to). Cedeno...well, he's helped a lot by the fact he plays SS. He could still turn out to be pretty solid at least for his position.
  9. No one questions da Dunn.
  10. And yet the national media still has yet to catch on. Of all the personalities on ESPN, Mariotti and Wilbon are the only ones that seem to see that Dusty needs to go. Any coincidence that they're the only ones actually paying attention to the Cubs?
  11. I'll come off the bench. I can't hit at all. I'll be da Gremlin or Neifi.
  12. Agreed. I'll just pretend there is a strike or something. I can't quit baseball. I just can't. I'll still follow this joke of a franchise if Dusty gets extended, I'll still watch all their games and I'll still go to a few a year. It's a disease I can't break. And the Cubs will take full advantage of fans just like me.

  14. My White Sox fan friend called Dusty a miracle worker today. As long as no one seems to understand that our coaching staff actively tries to lower the team OBP and our manager refuses to bat high-OBP guys at the top of the order other than NSBB posters, no changes will be made. :(
  15. At least when the Royals and Pirates suck on a yearly basis, their fans know it's coming because ownership just refuses to spend money to get a better product on the field. Our ownership spends as much as just about anyone outside of the Sawx and Yanks and we still can't win a damn thing.
  16. Man, I forgot how ugly that year was. So does that mean 2007 will randomly kick ass? Just like 2003, 2007 should be the first year for a new manager as well.
  17. Agreed. Funny how he can have ~150 less homers than Sammy and is practically guaranteed...and there are doubts about Sammy's ability to get in. Especially when Thomas has just as much evidence of steroid use pointing at him as Sammy does (which is to say, none). I don't think Thomas has anywhere near as much pointing at him. Frank was always big, Sammy tripled in size during his career. I don't think Thomas used at all, but just because someone started using steroids before he became an everyday major leaguer doesn't mean it didn't happen.
  18. Murton up to 6th, Cedeno 8th. Solid.
  19. I guess the Cubs need to play in a dump so we can get street cred. If the Sox and the Cubs switched ballparks, maybe the Sox fans could get their due for being drunk at ballgames.
  20. apparently, pierre & jones can be beaten like a deadhorse, but bringing up the kids' failure means banning? interesting thought process. We gave up three pitchers, all of whom are pitching fairly well for Florida, for Pierre, who is putting up a worse OBP than Neifi did last season. Jones has been doubled off second base three times this season on stupid baserunning plays. (It should be noted that many on this board have let off Jacque lately since it became clear that he needs a platoon partner and because he has a knack for clutch home runs.)

Especially when Thomas has just as much evidence of steroid use pointing at him as Sammy does (which is to say, none). Sosa career: .274/.345/.537/.882, 129 OPS+ Thomas career: .307/.427/.568/.995, 161 OPS+ I'm not sure what those numbers are supposed to mean in the context of steroids, but it always amazes me how good those numbers are for a guy who doesn't get that much pub for being an all-time great.
  22. Andy

Not to mention his tremendous leaping ability. There are players with excellent verts, and then there's Thomas. Fixed
  23. Wow, Matt Morris has been bad this season? Who didn't see that one coming? Didn't. Should have.
