    wasn't he making the major league minimum as a member of the 40-man roster? No, it's a split deal. AZPhil goes thru all that stuff and I'm not going to try and find it now. But I "think" that if you're on the 40 man and have never played in the majors, you're making 60k or so. But once you've made it to the bigs, you get a different split. Fairly substantial, to the point your AAA salary moves up to around 200k or so. At any rate, all these guys-Wada, Beeler, Hendricks, and Alcantara start making more just by coming up. Even if they're sent back down quickly. And for some reason I think Alcantara signed for around 100k, maybe 125.

    I kind of do too. If we DO try it, it's so [expletive] interesting and possibly awesome that I doubt I'd be upset if we spent 25 mill or so on FA pitching and a few backups and headed into next year at 75 mill. I'd rather have an OF added in FA and a good pair of SP, but I get why they'd at least try all these youngsters out in the majors before truly deciding on who stays and who goes.

    I know Kyle's heart is in the right place. No one else can talk negative and coax more out of guys than him. It's proven. I truly have no idea who he's actually high on or not either, it's quite brilliant, but understandably confusing.

    Just go with AA. If Almora makes it up, we'll figure something out for him at the appropriate time. Arn Anderson has deemed Mendy silly. Plus, when he hits a HR, we can give the 4 Horsemen symbol.

    What is there to "catch on to?" Trying to get something from guys having down years or coming off of injuries/surgeries and the like is nothing new; even Hendry tried to do it, so it's not like the FO has stumbled across something new that everyone is slapping their foreheads for not figuring this out before. I just went and looked, I thought Hammel's peripherals last season were much better than they were. You're right, I don't see anything other than our guys being good at picking the right guys here. Side note-Hamels has a 20 team NTC that we're on.

    I wouldn't get my heart set on him or anyone else that's underperformed their peripherals. My guess is those guys will be highly sought after at this point, to where they're not a bargain at all. Other teams surely will catch on after watching us flip these types back to them for 3 years now.

But if Hamels can be had for his entire contract and we give up nothing higher in value than Johnson and Vogelbach, where does he rank in the top tier guys? Personally, I'd put him 1st. Why would you have him ahead of Lester? Yeah he's not quite as good as Hamels, but he also would take zero prospects and doesn't have a history of arm issues. I've got little confidence in getting top guys to commit here without seriously overbidding until we're better. I saw Gammons mention 5/120 on Lester, by the way. I'd take Hamels at less money and it'd help show the FA class a few months later we're trying to compete. Possibly helping land a good OF or even another solid SP.

    It's a necessary evil. And we've got tons of money to spend(40-50 mill) with very few longterm needs other than pitching. So which of the FA available seem to be a better value than what's left on Hamels deal? Top tier Scherzer Lester Shields 2nd tier Hammel Liriano Masterson Beckett Santana 3rd tier McCarthy De La Rosa Dempster Correia Kendrick Hernandez Peavy Rehab flyers Billingsley Anderson Johnson I may have guy or two in a wrong tier(Beckett?) but still.....These are our options in FA outside of non-tenders..... I'll call it now: Hamels is NOT dealt in July, but we shock everyone and make a claim on him and things get interesting, as Amaro is looking to dump salary. We won't offer any top prospects, but who knows? It's Amaro, anything is possible.

    I'm more than a bit surprised he's signing. He was first team All Big 10 as a Freshman, but struggled this past season. He was draft eligible, but would have still had leverage after next year as a Junior. Nice get.

    I'd love to get him, but I don't want to part with any of our top 100 types. It's Amaro, so I'd try to open with a package led by Travis Wood. Include Vogelbach, Pierce Johnson, and Vizcaino and see what he says.
