  1. 2 straight years of [expletive] up the overall top pick(don't need your Buxton crap Kyle). At any rate, my guess is Daz better be prepared to be an Astro.
  2. He's a top 10 prospect for over half of MLB teams. after the year he's had? One, guys struggle. They can come out of it. The talent is still there. Two, its not like he'd have been sent down if its a different team. We had no choice. The glove and proximity to majors would still put him there.
  3. He's a top 10 prospect for over half of MLB teams.
  4. According to Badler, the Brewers are trying to trade for space before signing Lara.
  5. I would bet he doesn't make the cut on most. Here's a 20 that was posted in the minor league forum today: Bryant, Baez, Soler, Tseng, Almora, Vizcaino, Edwards, Rivero, Vogelbach, Bruno, Russell, Alcantara, Schwarber, Torres, McKinney, Johnson, Hendricks, Stinnett, Jimenez, Underwood Who does Black kick out? He's ahead of Bruno and Underwood for me.
  6. Corey Black is definitely in my Cubs top 20, but that's not nearly enough to get Valbuena, in my opinion. His versatility means a lot to us next year. If I'm trading our own minor leaguers for him, as an example-it'd take Blackburn and Vogelbach. 2 guys that would likely be in most teams 6-10 range. I'd want something fairly close to that for Ruggiano too, for the same reason. We just don't have to move either and both could easily fill holes for us until youngsters take over.
  7. Ranking our available trade pieces..... 1. Ruggiano- with a year of control left, I'd say he's easily the most valuable guy likely to be moved. 2. Strop- some team control, may be looked at as a set up guy for a few teams. 3. Wright/Russell- figure one is moved, no idea which. Slightly more valuable than Thatcher anyway. 4. Barney-glove 5. Schierholtz- guess he could still move up if he heats up. If not, I figure he's an August waiver claim by someone. 6. Villanueva-waiver claim 7. Bonifacio- total question mark on health I could see Christian Villanueva being dealt, if so I'd actually place him 3rd or 4th on this list value-wise. If Valbuena is moved, he'd be 1st on here. If Edwin were dumped, I'd probably put him 5th on here, as far as return goes. Travis Wood would be 1st, higher than Valbuena. % of getting dealt Russell/Wright-95 Barney-75, other 25 is a DFA Strop-60 Ruggiano-50(we may want him for next year) Villanueva-50(25 on a DFA) Schierholtz-50(more if he produces) Bonifacio-25(health) Valbuena-25 Christian Villanueva-10 Jackson-10 Wood-5 Castro or Arrieta-under 1
  8. In both cases, they're getting better behind the plate. They could both use a bump up in competition, but Contreras in Daytona has to be keeping that from happening. In my opinion, they each have a chance still to develop late and become legit prospects. For now though, neither is even in remote consideration for a top 30 spot on my personal list.
  9. on the one hand, i don't want to throw 20M+ a year at lester...on the other, what the hell else are we going to do with money for the next few years? I have no idea. Is Alcantara in CF, at 2B, or not in the majors(hed have to fall on his face obviously)to begin next year? Is KB going to come up as a 3B or in RF? C Castillo, need a backup 1B Rizzo 2B Alcantara, Javy, or Valbuena SS Castro 3B Valbuena, Javy or KB in May-maybe Olt as a backup 1B/3B? LF ????? Maybe Lake is a backup? CF Alcantara, Sweeney as a backup RF ??????? KB in May? I can see us spending 15-20 mill on 2-3 stopgaps, I guess. Or spend fairly big on 1 guy and 5 mill or so on a pair of secondary pieces. 15-20 mill on 2 starting pitchers. But damn, who knows? We may not be done trading.
  10. We had the no. 1 rotation in fWAR made up of: 1) Some guy who was a mid-20s struggling reliever and was half the return for half a season of some guy we picked up as a 1/$5m FA the year before 2) A guy who a couple years ago was our mid-20s late-blooming reliever 3) A guy we picked up for 1/$6m this offseason 4) A guy we got for one year of a relief pitcher because the Reds didn't think he cracked their top 5 5) A 4/$52m free agent I've never looked at it like that. They're pretty [expletive] great at identifying talent.
  11. David's post. Right there. That's our whole offseason argument right there. At least it's something different.
  12. Oh, and Josh Harrison(6th round pick) of "I was traded for Grabow and Gorzelanny" fame, made it for the Pirates.
  13. Glad to see Starlin make it. Was surprised to see a tweet he's only 4th in the NL in SS fWAR. I knew Tulo and figured Hanley.....The other? [expletive] Peralta, who has a gigantic add for D currently. [expletive] Cardinals.
  14. Sorry for the exaggeration, but I'd love to see Javy, KB, Schwarber, Soler, and Vogelbach as a 3rd team in the HR derby.
  15. Don't forget Straily. Damn, already did. But yeah, he should probably take precedence over Wada and Beeler. His velo has been down though this year. He may need a while to fine tune things, I guess?
  16. The talent we have is staggering. We'll have another high pick next year and hopefully another IFA feast too. The only possible thing holding them back from changing course is money. And with our current payroll, it's easy to imagine contending next year with a sub 100 mill, or right at it, type of payroll.
  17. That can't even compare to what they thought after Arrieta's Red Sox start.
  18. We do have an open 40 man spot too. I hope Hendricks starts the rest of the year. Let Wada and Beeler fight it out for the other spot.
  19. God, why? Everyone, including the FO, raved about his work ethic. In fact, Jed or Theo even mentioned he'd be welcomed back in some capacity, after his playing career was over, if he were interested. yeah but i really don't want him teaching anyone anything Honestly, I think Manny is much better of a choice obviously. But Manny is legitimately teaching, as he should be. Sori played long enough and is certainly loved by his teammates. No clue what he'd be doing, but surely there's a role somewhere. Helping kids acclimate to the everyday grind? Recruiting in the Dominican? Hell, he probably just wants to kick back and relax. But if he wants more, I'd find him something. Sure, he wasn't a great example to model after, but neither was Kerry and he's at least doing something for them.

  21. Well, I said I expected 1 or 2. Spend 40 mill or so on 2 SP and an OF, maybe 2 if Ruggiano is dealt.
  22. I hope we find a place in the org for Sori.
  23. I can see that. I do think they'll add a bigger name or two through FA. But yeah, I guess you're right. If we've got a general cap ceiling until renovation money helps out, we won't blow it all in one offseason. Side note-I'm feeling pretty confident that the 15-20 mill we've saved for future uses is going to be gobbled up next July 2nd. And we'll spend regularly(100 mill or so) on regular ML payroll next year.
  24. I think I sense optimism out of you. You really, really liked this trade, didn't you? I did. For the same reasons I was meh on the Garza trade and still am. Quantity sucks, pitchers suck. Elite hitting prospects are the best thing you can get. This offseason is going to be different than any we've seen out of this FO. We're close now.
