    I'm really eager to hear what Dusty has to say regarding the errors by Bynum and Izturis. My guess is he downplays them or says nothing at all.

    I could be wrong, but with Murton's walk this inning, I think his OPS is at .800. Not bad after a horrendous early summer in his first full season.

    I honestly think people who think that are going to be very suprised. After this HORRENDOUS season, it's almost like fate is forcing them to make some big moves. If they do not, there is going to be such a negative light put toward the Cubs and ownership. They will have a "bad name", so to say. It's almost like they have to make a big splash just to make up for this terrible year. I fully expect atleast 1 big signing, and Soraino would be a very good choice, if for 2nd, as said. . Oh, man this is so depressing. I made almost this exact post a couple of years ago. :(

You want to be aggressive at the plate, I know that, too. It IS strange that our pitchers often find themselves in trouble after giving up walks, yet opposing pitchers rarely find themselves in that situation. That has been confusing me for some time. It seems like this guy is suggesting you wait for a good pitch that you can hit hard, and swing at it. I don't know, seems to me that sometimes you wouldn't see a good pitch, and then you'd just end up clogging the bases again. Back to the drawing board.

    A few points: (And yes I believe we could contend by just upgrading slightly in a few areas) 1. The cubs could almost certainly get Cabrera for a package of Pie, Veal and Scott Moore. If the marlins are building for anything, it's 2009. All three of those mentioned should be contributing major leaguers at that point. If it takes another one of our top 5 prospects, or Sean Marshall,i'd do it. This is a future hall-of-famer. Do other teams have better packages they could offer? Yes. Are very many other teams in a position to give up half of their farm system to become an instant contender? No. The Dodgers and the Angels are a couple of others. 2. Cabrera > Pujols> Howard and everyone else. Cabrera is the perhaps the best pure hitter in all of baseball at just 23 years old. He is spraying line drives from line to line, and although he is sitting on 25 HRs, he already has 47 doubles. His current line again is .339/.429/.584 3. This guy is the same age as top prospects like Carlos Quentin and Stephen Drew, and he is 3.5 years younger than Ryan Howard. Imagine what he'll be doing at Howard's age. 4.     Just curious, but with all of us assuming Baker is out the door come October, what is your reaction if Hendry announces a two year extension? It is possible that he feels inextricably tied to Baker, and knows that all the attention will turn to him if 2007 is a bust without Baker at the helm.

    Well, I do think he'll have a couple of years where he puts up a 3.50-4.00 ERA, but he's not going to be a consistent #3.

    I wish that was luck, but they have collected ALOT of legit talent. Sanchez and Ramirez were the Red Sox top two prospects in many eyes. Nolasco was HUGELY underrated by the Cubs orginization. Not only that but guys like Willingham, Olsen, Hermida, Uggla were some highly touted prospects. Not to mention Willis and Cabrera. I'm jealous of the young talent on that team. Olsen is Scott Kazmir lite, Sanchez showed some nasty stuff today, Ramirez is one of the most exciting young SSs in the league...and so on. Nolasco will settle in as a back of the rotation guy, imo. His peripherals are not impressive.

    Whats with everyone throwing out Gallagher's name and not Veal's? Frankly, if I knew we would make some serious changes to the offense, I could live with a Z/Hill/Marshall/Prior/Guzman rotation. That would afford us Soriano at 2nd and the opportunity to trade Jones and prospects for a big (BIG) RF bat, or Izturis and prospects for a big SS bat. My fantasy move would be Gallagher, Marshall and Scott Moore to the Yankees for ARod, with the Yanks eating some cash. Dump Izturis for a B prospect, Arod goes back to SS and.... Pierre Soriano Lee ARam ARod Barrett Murton Jones If the rotation is mediocre, we're right in the race. If the rotation clicks, we're the best team in the NL. Of course, we're just going to get Geoff Jenkins, dump Murton for a bench bat and a low level prospect, and pick up Miguel Batista. So.... Pierre Izturis Lee ARam Jenkins Jones Barrett Cedeno with Z/Batista/Hill/Marshall/Guzman Aram gets hurt in April, and we lose 110 games. The Arod deal is a little far-fetched, but I think with a couple of creative moves this team could be a favorite going into next season...I just don't have any faith in Jim anymore :-(

    Matthews Jr. is #1 for me. The insane jump, the body control, the stretch.....it was Jordanesque.

    Murton is slugging near .500 at Wrigley this season in a good number of ABs. His approach at the plate is fantastic, and he has hit for power in spurts which tells me it's not likely a "flukey" thing. He slugged .521 in 140 ABs last year and .723 so far this month.

    Just thought I'd take a 3/4 season review of our most promising young hitter. Over the course of the current season, Murton has slumped, been platooned, been benched outright for a brief period, and been shuffled up and down the lineup. He has had his approach at the plate questioned by coaches, and tinkered with by Sarge and Dusty. He has posted the following line so far in 328 ABs: .296/.358/.427/.785 For those who have been suggesting a Jones/Murton platoon in '07, here are Matt's #s against Righties in 226 ABs .292/.346/.416/.762 For his short Major league career he is .302/.366/.455/.821 My personal take is that Murton's power has suffered somewhat due to adjustments suggested by the coaching staff. I'm not saying he has 40 HR potential, but I think he is certainly capable of slugging .480. He currently has the 2nd highest OBP% on the team. He is still 24 years old. For the record, I would really like to see Matt get 500+ ABs in LF next year. I see an .850 OPS season, and a perfect #2 hitter. Unfortunately, I think Hendry will sign a left fielder and trade Matt for a bench player with power. Your thoughts?

    Just curious, what difficulty level are you guys on? I don't have an easy time posting 50 HR 150 RBI seasons on the hardest level, but It's more realistic that way.

    I would really prefer giving up Demp in that scenario. I think Wuertz could handle closing until the job is handed over to Broxton at some point. Howry and Eyre have done their jobs very well for the most part, and it would be nice to not have to worry about the pen this offseason. Maddux + Dempster for Ethier + Broxton seems feasible. We could, of course, package Ethier + Pie + Broxton for Miggy Cabrera..... :-) And follow with Murton + Cedeno + Hill for Miggy Tejada. Now we have fewer unproven players for Dusty to ruin, no pitching whatsoever, and a higher payroll....but we won't be shutout very often :-)

    There's something amiss here. Why is it I've come to expect: "Sean Marshall suffers torn cuticle, out indefinately" While I also fear: "Cubs infielder Perez struck by train, will start both games of doubleheader tomorrow."

    Maybe I'm crazy, but Sarge Jr's catch was the greatest I've ever seen. EVER.

    Call me crazy, but I dont do it. The disparity in numbers over the past few years isn't very big. Let me preface my argument by saying that I believe Aramis will be around .310/.365/.575 during his prime (all lower numbers than his age 26 season). ARods career numbers are .306/.386./.575 and he is two years older. That's .020 points in OPS. Yes he is a better baserunner. Yes he is a better fielder. Is the difference between the two enough to warrant paying AROD money that could be spent elsewhere? What if we kept ARAM and shipped Rich Hill, Jacque Jones and Felix Pie to Philly for Abreu? Then got Carlos Lee in the offseason? ARod's money pays for that. JP Walker Lee Abreu Ramirez Lee Barrett Cedeno Or JP Walker Lee ARod cheap LH LF Barrett Murton Cedeno

    The thing is it doesn't matter if Gene Clines gets fired, or Dick Pole or whoever. Dusty will just recommend another guy with the same "old school" philosophy. Someone dumb or subservient enough to not point out Dustys shortcomings
